This was an Addition/Renovation for a young couple and their two children, to an existing house that was originally designed and built in 1939. Like many homes of this era, the Kitchen was not developed as a place of family gathering and social interaction, like modern kitchens and life-styles of today, and this was the seed for the desire, by the home owners, when they asked me to help them to ‘Update’ their home.

This is a solid oak table featuring a scalloped apron. The table base is painted in Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Bergere, a smoky blue/gray with warm undertones. The solid oak surface has been sanded smooth and stained in a rich Spanish Oak that accentuates the wood grain beautifully. This table has two additional 6" leaves.

This beautiful custom cabinetry hutch, was designed with glass doors, glass shelves, bun feet and warm wood top to make it look and feel like a piece of furniture. It connects to the nearby kitchen and bar visually, but also stands on its own. Glass doors mimic the custom leaded glass doors on an adjacent bar, and reflect the lake beyond the adjacent window. In addition, the painted finish and stained wood top coordinates with the kitchen palette without matching it too closely. Photo by MIke Kaskel

The genesis of design for this desert retreat was the informal dining area in which the clients, along with family and friends, would gather.
Located in north Scottsdale’s prestigious Silverleaf, this ranch hacienda offers 6,500 square feet of gracious hospitality for family and friends. Focused around the informal dining area, the home’s living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, offer warmth of materials and proximity for expansion of the casual dining space that the owners envisioned for hosting gatherings to include their two grown children, parents, and many friends.
The kitchen, adjacent to the informal dining, serves as the functioning heart of the home and is open to the great room, informal dining room, and office, and is mere steps away from the outdoor patio lounge and poolside guest casita. Additionally, the main house master suite enjoys spectacular vistas of the adjacent McDowell mountains and distant Phoenix city lights.
The clients, who desired ample guest quarters for their visiting adult children, decided on a detached guest casita featuring two bedroom suites, a living area, and a small kitchen. The guest casita’s spectacular bedroom mountain views are surpassed only by the living area views of distant mountains seen beyond the spectacular pool and outdoor living spaces.

The area that once held a washer and dryer was opened up and made into a Butler's Pantry. Seeded glass in the upper cabinet doors allows collections of stemware and pitchers to be displayed. A beverage refrigerator is stocked with soda, water, wine and beer. The utility sink in this area gives additional food prep space or drink prep space when the kitchen is busy. Adura floor tile was used throughout the Kitchen and Butler's Pantry.

Photo includes additional updates to the front garden in early 2015. The front areas of this landscape in Bel Marin Keys, Novato, were transformed from a tired, water thirsty-lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance. And a new driveway design featuring large concrete slabs and small black pebbles set in resin in between. A variety of low-water plants for sun and part shade complete this project front yard transformation. Installed in February 2014. The back areas of this transformation is featured in a separate project: Modern Water-Side Landscape Remodel http://www.houzz.com/projects/456093/Modern-Water-Side-Landscape-Remodel---Lawn-Replaced--Novato--CA
