The side of the addition shows how well the new space integrates with the existing house. The prefinished white Hardie trim adds a clean fresh look while emphasizing the architectural lines of the house and low maintenance. The new Weather Shield windows with built-in grids tie into the style of the home and match newer windows previously installed.

Old meets new: 2024 addition to a 1940 house. In this marriage of old and new, the whole emphasizes a harmony of materials and visual connections throughout. Middlefork was retained to update and revitalize this North Shore home to a family of six. The primary goal of this project was to update and expand the home's small, eat-in kitchen. The existing space was gutted and a 1,500-square-foot addition was built to house a gourmet kitchen, connected breakfast room, fireside seating, butler's pantry, and a small office. The family desired nice, timeless spaces that were also durable and family-friendly. As such, great consideration was given to the interior finishes. The 10' kitchen island, for instance, is a solid slab of white velvet quartzite, selected for its ability to withstand mustard, ketchup and finger-paint. There are shorter, walnut extensions off either end of the island that support the children's involvement in meal preparation and crafts. Low-maintenance Atlantic Blue Stone was selected for the perimeter counters. The scope of this phase grew to include re-trimming the front façade and entry to emphasize the Georgian detailing of the home. In addition, the balance of the first floor was gutted; existing plumbing and electrical systems were updated; all windows were replaced; two powder rooms were updated; a low-voltage distribution system for HDTV and audio was added; and, the interior of the home was re-trimmed. Since we wanted this nursery to be mostly neutral with some pastel accents, I opted for unpainted, natural wood furniture paired with white for an eclectic feel and decided on these great pieces from Oeuf. A wood beaded pendant hangs from the ceiling and mirrors the natural vibe. The crib bedding is super simple with just a patterned sheet. This remodel to an existing home updates the interior, creating contemporary spatial features and new materiality. The existing home has a unique style that was used to inspire the forms that define the spaces. The new finishes cater to the homeowners distinct taste in elegant textures. The project scope was limited to the most commonly used spaces: kitchen, living room and main entry corridor. The inclusion of a large multi-slide door and interior glass railing emphasize the tranquil canyon views and flow between rooms. This project is a great example of how limited updates can transform the feel of an existing home while still keeping the overall character intact. Construction Type: Addition/Remodel
