The Cotton Factory is a collection of historic industrial buildings housing artist studios, non-profits and other creative industries. This courtyard space acts as both a common area for the workers, as well as an event space fed by the adjacent catering kitchen. The space provides several unique conversation spaces, as well as table seating for 24. The tables are able to be moved to suit whatever event needs may arise. Small unprogrammed open spaces allow for temporary art installations or additional seating should the need arise. In an effort to adhere to a tight budget, all elements are comprised of affordable and even reclaimed materials using simple construction methods. These elements also suit the eclectic style of the buildings inhabitants, while referencing the industrial past of the building itself.

The homeowners of this old home in Greenwood Village, Colorado wanted two things: a space large enough to hold the dinner and cocktail parties they often hosted for business, and adhering to a strong traditional French design. The hardscape and custom pergolas are the foundation for a large entertaining area large enough for several tables. A Campania International fountain from Birdsall & Co. in a custom-made basin provides the focal point to the dining area. Several levels of retaining walls provide not only symmetry, accentuated by planted cast stone containers and pedestals, but also space for a bocce ball court at the highest level. A built-in barbecue and fire pit surrounding by teak Adirondack chairs make for a more intimate dining and conversation space, balancing out similar 'outdoor rooms' sprinkled throughout the landscape. With an emphasis on the upper back unit, the owner’s private residence within this recently purchased Edward Killingsworth triplex, the first order of business was to strip the excess out and to return the complex to something that resembled the original. With a limited budget, the tact was to restore where possible, and to insert where needed, but always with a sympathetic eye. The kitchen quickly became the primary focus and it was soon realized that by removing the division between the existing galley and family room that the essence of the structural system could be revealed. Once opened the datum of the layered beams was adhered to with the kitchen reinforcing this overhead water line. The primary internal wall was then highlighted with a new wood veneer with the refrigerator recessed (borrowing a bit of space from the master closet) and the existing heater chromed.

Situated on the edge of New Hampshire’s beautiful Lake Sunapee, this Craftsman-style shingle lake house peeks out from the towering pine trees that surround it. When the clients approached Cummings Architects, the lot consisted of 3 run-down buildings. The challenge was to create something that enhanced the property without overshadowing the landscape, while adhering to the strict zoning regulations that come with waterfront construction. The result is a design that encompassed all of the clients’ dreams and blends seamlessly into the gorgeous, forested lake-shore, as if the property was meant to have this house all along. The ground floor of the main house is a spacious open concept that flows out to the stone patio area with fire pit. Wood flooring and natural fir bead-board ceilings pay homage to the trees and rugged landscape that surround the home. The gorgeous views are also captured in the upstairs living areas and third floor tower deck. PRE-TEEN BEDROOMS Time Frame: 6 Weeks // Budget: $10,000 // Design Fee: $2,500 Here is a small project I took on over the summer to help a past client design her young son’s bedrooms. She didn’t want to spend a lot of money, knowing that someday her boys will want to change their rooms, but also wanted to create something that they would like now, and could grow in to. She had a Feng Sui expert evaluate the space first. Going off of the expert’s advice, I came up with space plans for each room that adhered to Feng Sui. I designed the rooms based off the boy’s favorite colors. New furniture, custom window coverings, paint and decor were selected to give the boy’s each a special room of their own.

Inspiration for a timeless exterior home remodel in Chicago

A requested color palette of vibrant red and raspberry pink was complemented with cool whites and cream. Striking pattern in the lush window treatments sets the stage. The improved furniture layout maximizes all available space and now supports the requested eating area, writing desk, TV watching/lounging location and a small sleeping alcove. Rugs are intentionally omitted to adhere to the safety principals of Design for Aging in Place. The striking custom fascia cabinet packs a storage punch with concealed mini-fridge, microwave, food pantry and pull out shelf for the printer. To support this fashionista’s need to expand her wardrobe storage, classic white custom cabinetry provides hanging storage, full length mirrors, decorative columns that open to store costume jewelry and ample shoe storage drawers. Cast Glass can make a stunning piece of wall decor or colorful accents. Custom colors can be applied to the finished glass surface such as fused color that is hot melted into the glass surface, bonded jewels or colored accents/metals or other objects adhered to the glass surface. Cast Glass or slumped glass can be painted with a custom high-quality color coating to provide that added "pop" of color. This client wanted something unique that looked like alligator skin so we created this custom texture on low iron glass. This wall sculpture definitely makes for colorful art, that can be unique and customized with any pattern or print.
