This West Asheville small house is on an ⅛ acre infill lot just 1 block from the Haywood Road commercial district. With only 840 square feet, space optimization is key. Each room houses multiple functions, and storage space is integrated into every possible location.
The owners strongly emphasized using available outdoor space to its fullest. A large screened porch takes advantage of the our climate, and is an adjunct dining room and living space for three seasons of the year.
A simple form and tonal grey palette unify and lend a modern aesthetic to the exterior of the small house, while light colors and high ceilings give the interior an airy feel.

This custom deck was designed to take advantage of existing terracing that provided a structural base for the new deck. It was also designed to incorporate the existing concrete stair case through the middle. The request was that over the longer than average length of the deck, it not seem too large and flat. Multiple levels were introduced to accomplish this, along with an extended, cantilevered section that takes advantage of the views over the terraced property.

The homeowners wanted to take advantage of induction cooking, but were hesitant because of their unfamiliarity. I suggested reducing their cooktop from 36” to 30” and adding a 15” gas cooktop. The jury’s still out as to whether they'll use the gas, as they've fallen in love with induction.

This is the TV viewing area.. We recessed some storage areas to maximize space. The wall in the background had to be built out due to multiple plumbing pipes. this left a lot of unused space. We decided to recess a display area to take advantage of some of the empty space behind the wall. The entertainment area was recessed into the space containing the furnace and hot water tank.

This palatial estate spreads across the fan-shaped lot to take advantage of the wonderful views from the backyard. Four species of palm tree were used in the landscaping to accent the shapes and textures of the exterior.

One of the few truly American architectural styles, the Craftsman/Prairie style was developed around the turn of the century by a group of Midwestern architects who drew their inspiration from the surrounding landscape. The spacious yet cozy Thompson draws from features from both Craftsman/Prairie and Farmhouse styles for its all-American appeal. The eye-catching exterior includes a distinctive side entrance and stone accents as well as an abundance of windows for both outdoor views and interior rooms bathed in natural light.
The floor plan is equally creative. The large floor porch entrance leads into a spacious 2,400-square-foot main floor plan, including a living room with an unusual corner fireplace. Designed for both ease and elegance, it also features a sunroom that takes full advantage of the nearby outdoors, an adjacent private study/retreat and an open plan kitchen and dining area with a handy walk-in pantry filled with convenient storage. Not far away is the private master suite with its own large bathroom and closet, a laundry area and a 800-square-foot, three-car garage. At night, relax in the 1,000-square foot lower level family room or exercise space. When the day is done, head upstairs to the 1,300 square foot upper level, where three cozy bedrooms await, each with its own private bath.
