This hillside lake home on Lake Metigoshe in southwest Manitoba pairs ICF construction with a featured white pine timber frame in the great room and kitchen. A 24-foot vaulted ceiling and a queen bent truss anchor the main living space, taking full advantage of 180-degree lake views, while an integrated corner staircase connects the main floor to a loft above and a walk-out level below. 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, completed in 2020 with Amplify Design and built by Alair Homes Brandon.

The cabinet serves to redefine a new entry, while also containing all the media related electronics such as, surround sound speakers, the flat panel television, and the various amplifiers and subwoofers. This cabinet and the opposite wall are clad with hot rolled steel and flank the living room in order to direct the relationship of the space between that of the kitchen, living room, and the outdoor patio. This contemporary home features two striking staircases with integrated LED lighting, glass railing, and thick wood treads. The color-changing LEDs shift from red to blue to yellow, transforming the staircases into dynamic focal points throughout the day. Wood treads and handrails are paired with frameless glass balustrades secured by black pins. Open risers amplify the LED lighting effect while maximizing transparency. The first-level staircase uses cantilevered and field-supported construction, while the second rises on dual metal stringers. The architecture of the Karoo Wilderness Center is a result of a thorough process of investigation into the origins and character of the Karoo landscape and the flora and fauna that result from its particular qualities. The tectonic events that produced the specific topography of the site, trajectories of water runoff, wind movement, soil composition, and effects of plant and animal species on the landscape have converged to create the conditions of the site chosen for the Center. Each of these factors have in turn been subject to the impact of human inhabitation and vernacular building practices, amplified in recent generations to a harmful degree by shortsighted agricultural strategies and their associated effects of overgrazing, water over-manipulation and erosion. Fundamental to the architectural response is the premise that the human species is an inherent part of the conditions that comprise and affect the landscape. The significance of the Center, enhanced and informed by the activities that occur within and as an extension of it, lies in the co-dependence of the Center and the ecosystem as inherently bound entities. The architecture of the Center is intended to make evident the natural processes of the Karoo and establish a new precedent for building within and through an ecosystem defined by dynamic flux.

The dramatic vanity wall tile offers the first breathtaking play on lighting in the room. New walls separating different zones provide visual separations while providing built-in niches for everyday necessities. Framed-in linen tower offers a bit of rustic glam to the space with its dark handles. Many walls were removed and items relocated to offer this large open-concept bathroom & walk-in closet. Large custom shower with 24”x24” subtle textured wall tiles provides a nice contract to the texture pattern of the floor tile. Knee wall providing toilet privacy holds the shower niche. High end custom plumbing fixtures offers clean simple lines. Center island with chandelier centers the room while providing glam to the space. Swarovski handle amplifies the glam look of the island. Simple shaker doors and wall-to-wall custom closet with large handles don’t overpower the space. Gorgeous 24”x24” patented textured floor tiles with slight sheen ground the large open space while providing overall warmth and glam.
