At this residence, we created a small flagstone patio and backyard fire area nestled in the corner of their property. A pondless water feature starts behind the fire pit. Its first set of falls cascade down toward the fire and the viewers, then the stream winds its way around the boulders that contain the fire area. The final cascade faces the house and outdoor kitchen, making the feature visible and audible from all outdoor living areas. Plantings provide seasonal color and screening from the golf course without blocking the broader view.

The new French doors open wide to allow guests to spill outside, yet still feel connected to the group indoors. The spacious New York Bluestone patio is defined by curved Chilton stone walls capped with Indiana limestone, beds of grasses, salvia, rudbeckia, weigela, hydrangea, and more. A custom arbor with stone bases and a gate gives just enough privacy and provides a well-defined entry. The arbor, plus the newly-planted arborvitae, gives the side yard a secret-garden-feel.

A welcoming bench sits across from a custom water garden to entice visitors to have a seat and let the stresses of the world melt away. Arborvitaes provide an evergreen wall behind the bench to create a private sanctuary. Boxwoods, Peonies and Hydrangeas flank the fountain creating a space that delights all the senses.

Nancy Dransfield - Photographer The back of the house naturally extends into the back yard. The kitchen flows out onto the deck that becomes a great dining and grilling area. The sun room also flows easily to the pool. The required fencing is along the property lines, so that the back yard is not interrupted by fences. The open lawn behind and to the side of the pool allows for a wide open space where folks can overflow onto the lawn from the pool deck.

AFTER: For this project, we kept existing boxwoods, removed overgrown arborvitae, and trimmed back loropetalum. Perennials were planted along the street side to create interest and added curb appeal.

Exterior home idea in Chicago

It’s amazing what a garden can do to turn a small space from bland to beautiful! Our redesign included grey fiberglass and aqua blue ceramic pots filled with arborvitaes, knockout roses, boxwoods, gold sweetflag grasses, and a red ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple. A centerpiece of this garden is the Restoration Hardware zinc fountain. All of the planters also contain low-voltage landscape lighting for a dramatic nighttime effect.
