At this residence, we created a small flagstone patio and backyard fire area nestled in the corner of their property. A pondless water feature starts behind the fire pit. Its first set of falls cascade down toward the fire and the viewers, then the stream winds its way around the boulders that contain the fire area. The final cascade faces the house and outdoor kitchen, making the feature visible and audible from all outdoor living areas. Plantings provide seasonal color and screening from the golf course without blocking the broader view.

We were selected to create the gardens at the Washington Design House benefiting Children’s Hospital in Washington DC. Donating our time, and construction costs, we transformed a rundown and overgrown garden into a truly magical series of outdoor spaces. Since it was a “design house”, we decided to have some fun with our work, introducing a series of pea gravel “splashes” in the pond garden, enlivening the pool garden with brightly colored cushions and umbrellas, and giving the “dance floor” garden structure and interest by using Emerald Green Arborvitae columns and a mass planting of Rhododendron Roseum Elegance.

The area along the existing driveway has aging Arborvitae that are now shaded by an overhead tree. They will eventually have to all come out. We began replacing three of them with Carpinus FransFontaine. Ironwood does well in these tough places.

Then the major plantings of Crapemyrtle, Western Arborvitae, and other evergreen screening plants were added. The next step was planting smaller shrubs like native Summersweet, dwarf variegated Boxwood, native Sweetspire, Cherry Laurel, and dwarf Butterfly bush. Next, we added numerous perennials for sequential bloom and finally bulbs for early spring color and pollinator interest. Lastly, everything was mulched with natural triple-shredded hardwood bark mulch. Now our client has many years to look forward to with screening, pollinator interest, and ongoing blooms on trees, shrubs perennials, and spring flowering bulbs.

A view heading into the featured garden space. Curved, flowing paved areas make creative use of this relatively small space in a suburban neighborhood. Columnar Emerald Green Arborvitae and Yoshino Cryptomeria are placed along the property border to enclose the space and create a sense of privacy within the garden. Over time, these evergreens will fill in and create a green screen surrounding the garden. In late summer the mauve umbels of Joe Pye Weed are showy paired with white David Sumer Phlox. This plant combination attracts butterflies which will add movement and animation to the garden. Clumps of tall Dallas Blues Switch grass were used to add texture, movement and winter interest.
