This gorgeous warm kitchen is so inviting with its maple stained cabinets and Taj Mahal countertops with full backsplash and waterfall at the island. We extended the upper cabinets and put in bronze glass fronts, floor to ceiling pantry cabinets in butler's pantry, under cabinet lighting, power bars, trash pullout, base cabinet rollouts, tray dividers, and a lazy susan. We added a cabinet above the refrigerator with lift hinges, a Tiered Liquor Pullout at the dry bar, Subzero and Wolf Appliances, a beautiful Custom Metal Hood, Custom door panels for dishwasher, and Custom door panels on backside of island.

This 1940’s Colonial style home in Boston’s Jamaica Plain had strong bones and rich character but lacked the space, modern conveniences, and storage that our clients desired. While they wished to retain the look of the exterior, as well as some of the home’s unique original features,, the kitchen and dining room needed to be reimagined in design, layout, and functionality.
Key considerations were the compact size of the home and a smaller lot that didn’t give our client the flexibility of an addition. Without adding on to the existing floor plan, we needed to find a way to gain vital extra space in the kitchen, which, with walls enclosing it on all sides, was dark and disconnected from the rest of the house. Our design team coordinated with our client to reconfigure the space by opening up the wall between the dining room and the kitchen to add a few extra inches – just enough to create an open flow between the two rooms. With the removal of that wall, the formerly dark kitchen was flooded with the natural light coming from the existing dining room windows, making the entire space feel brighter and more cohesive.
The original kitchen dated back to the mid-20th century and lacked, among other conveniences, a dishwasher, enough storage, or even countertop space for food prep. In redesigning the kitchen, we visually expanded the space by incorporating white upper cabinetry, open shelving, and white subway tiles extending from the backsplash to the ceiling. A new, larger window featuring a deep stone sill brought in even more light, and the appliances and apron sink were selected to retain the traditional look of the home while delivering modern functionality.
Considering how our client would use this space, we focused on creating a purposeful workspace and storage, ensuring that there was ample countertop space and cabinetry between the sink and range. A multi-purpose cabinet and countertop which serves as a microwave station and food service area were added to the backside of the dining room wall, packing a lot of utility into a small space.
Prior to this renovation, our client had painted the dining room in Mount Saint Anne by Benjamin Moore, a tranquil blue-gray that suited the room well and allowed the original built-in corner cabinetry to stand out, highlighting the home’s charm. With the newly opened floor plan extending into the kitchen, we selected a deep custom color for the base cabinets, Yorktowne Green by Benjamin Moore, to complement the dining room and pull all of the elements together in a cohesive space.
This transformation was remarkable, both functionally and visually. The kitchen is now a bright and inviting space that flows seamlessly into the rest of the house. The homeowners are thrilled with the results, and the small changes we incorporated that made a big difference in the overall feel and functionality of the space.

AFTER photo of the kitchen. We kept the cabinets and didn't even paint them white! The house boasted maple trim, solid maple doors and plenty of maple cabinetry in the kitchen. The beauty of wood cabinets was lost in the sea of tan paint, brown tile and brown laminate countertops (see BEFORE photo). To make the maple cabinets more appealing we combined paired them with cooler colors. The wall color above the cabinets is Benjamin Moore Horizon which we used throughout the family room as well. Then we added marble subway tile for a backsplash. The marble has golden and gray veining to tie in the color of the cabinets with the gray countertops. The countertops are "cement" colored Corian. We also made the decision to cut down the bi-level island so that it is all one level. Although the higher level in the BEFORE photo hid the sink and any mess inside, it really made it unusable for our family. The upper level counter was hardly 12" deep (only slightly larger than a dinner plate) so cups were constantly getting knocked off. By making the island all one height I gained a huge amount of workspace in the kitchen as well as a good space for counter height seating. The backside of the island is clad in the same pattern of modern wainscoting as the dining room. Pendant lights were placed above the island were canned lights were before.

Corian® Private Collection in the color Sonora was used for this vanity countertop - however we flipped the sheet over and used the backside of the sheet to create an even more exciting pattern.

If you ever found yourself shopping for a new home, finding a model home, falling in love with this model home and immediately signing on the dotted line. Yet after a few months of moving into your new home you realize that the kitchen and the layout of main level will not work out for your lifestyle. The model home you fell in love with was furnished with beautiful furniture distracting you from concentrating on what is really important to you. This is what happened to this couple in Ashburn, VA, after purchasing their dream home.
The kitchen lacked natural light, while its location was not ideal and was disrupting their daily routine. After a careful review of the kitchen design, a plan was formed to upgrade the kitchen.
Their kitchen was moved to a location between the two-story family room and front dining room. To the left of the family room there was a breakfast eating area that was not serving any purpose.
Our design incorporated the breakfast area placed along a couple feet from an adjacent pantry space to create this new dream kitchen.
By knocking down a few bearing walls, we have placed the main sink area under large backside windows. Now the kitchen can look into their beautiful backyard. A major load bearing wall between the old breakfast room and adjacent two-story family was taken down and a big steel beam took the place of that, creating a large seamless connection between the new kitchen and the rest of the home.
A large island was implemented with a prep sink, microwave, and with lots of seating space around it. Large scale professional appliances along with stunning mosaic backsplash tiles complement this amazing kitchen design.
Double barn style door in front of the pantry area sets off this storage space tucked away from rest of the kitchen. All the old tile was removed and a matching wide plank distressed wood floor was installed to create a seamless connection to rest of the home. A matching butler pantry cabinet area just outside of dining room and a wine station/drink serving area between family room and main foyer were added to better utilize the multi-function needs of the family.
The custom inset cabinetry with double layers and exotic stone counter top, distressed ceiling beams, and other amenities are just a few standouts of this project.
