The Jack + Mare designed and built this custom kitchen and dining remodel for a family in Portland's Sellwood Westmoreland Neighborhood. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to create an inviting and flowing space with custom details in all directions. The custom maple dining table was locally milled and crafted from a tree that had previously fallen in Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood; and the built-in L-shaped maple banquette provides unique comfortable seating with drawer storage beneath. The integrated kitchen and dining room has become the social hub of the house – the table can comfortably sit up to 10 people! Being that the kitchen is visible from the dining room, the refrigerator and dishwasher are hidden behind cabinet door fronts that seamlessly tie-in with the surrounding cabinetry creating a warm and inviting space. The end result is a highly functional kitchen for the chef and a comfortable and practical space for family and friends. Details: custom cabinets (designed by The J+M) with shaker door fronts, a baker's pantry, built-in banquette with integrated storage, custom local silver maple table, solid oak flooring to match original 1925 flooring, white ceramic tile backsplash, new lighting plan featuring a Cedar + Moss pendant, all L.E.D. can lights, Carrara marble countertops, new larger windows to bring in more natural light and new trim. The combined kitchen and dining room is 281 Square feet.

The freestanding white soaking tub sits beneath a large window, with a matte black floor-mount tub filler arching gracefully over the rim. Next to it, a hand-carved Moroccan-inspired accent cabinet with a live orchid adds an artisan touch that gives this West Chester bathroom its eclectic personality.

In Lisbon’s Alcântara neighborhood, a son inherited his father’s apartment and relocated from the UK with his partner to immerse themselves in Portuguese culture. Without altering the floor plan, our studio sought to bring clarity and lightness to the interiors, designing spaces that are both versatile and efficient, incorporating built-in furniture, artworks, and personal mementos. Throughout, the material palette plays with contrast and suspension. Cream stone floors are complemented by warm walnut finishes and airy white sheer curtains. Tailored cabinetry enhances spatial lightness by either floating, as seen with the distinct wall-mounted hall console and bedside tables, or by integrating subtly with the existing carpentry, such as the dresser extending beneath the window and the bay window's dining bench with concealed storage. Bespoke solutions cater to the living room’s diverse functions, including dining, reading, lounging, and occasionally painting. A niche beside the fireplace is home to a suspended walnut shelving system, intended to showcase a curated collection of ceramics and travel souvenirs. The room’s angled layout is tempered by a central composition of circular elements: a dining table, rug, and custom coffee table with a floating top. The dining area is completed with reissued vintage Portuguese classics. The kitchen includes a small breakfast nook, delineated by traditional hand-painted tiles from the nearby historic Sant’Anna factory, and a matching upholstered bench. These details come together to create a luminous, functional space that gently reflects the past while accommodating contemporary life.

LOS ANGELES, CA / SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL The commission for this 4,300-square-foot residence came with significant challenges for the architects – a house had once existed on the lot but had burned down and the attempt to replace the house had stalled, leading to an abatement order and a lapse of permits. Our first challenge was to revive the lapsed construction permit by proposing to “modify” the existing structure. The practical effect this had was to fix the footprint of the new home to the existing structure’s plan outline. Having thereby inherited the large, dense block of the original house, the new strategy became one of substituting selective areas of indoor space for outdoor courtyard. This strategy of trading indoor space for outdoor courtyard allowed an erosion of the formerly monolithic structure into a series of distinct volumetric elements, and further suggested that the architectural pieces could cohere as a “village.” The main level is further eroded by large, glazed planes, merging indoor with outdoor, and virtually stretching the landscape across interior space. Moving the detached garage from the rear yard to beneath the new living space allowed for a 75-meter lap pool and a shaded olive garden. The gardens include built-in seating, extensive use of ornamental grasses and Zen-like interior courtyards. A material palette of fossilized stone, bonderized-galvanized metal, and natural Douglas fir allows for the warmth desired by the wife, while providing the modernity required by the husband. Programmatically, her music room borrows from the calm and protected olive court in the rear, while his office becomes a pavilion set in the landscape, which both addresses the street and acts as a sheltering monument for the terraced entry garden.

The renovated laundry area fits full-size appliances beneath a warm wood folding counter, with an adjacent closet adding organized storage. Light wood flooring and clean white walls keep this hardworking basement space bright and streamlined.

Four stories is a long way to travel, and this staircase makes every level count. Seattle-style steel stringers from the Prestige Metal line carry the structure with industrial honesty, not hidden behind walls but celebrated as part of the design. Vertical metal bars reinforce that rhythm, while riserless white oak treads appear to float as they rise, light and shadow playing beneath them at every turn. The oak elements do more than add warmth, they add an organic balance. A white oak handrail caps the metal balustrade, and the shift from steel to wood under your hand transforms the daily climb into something quietly pleasant. In this project for an avid reader and their young family, Lincoln Lighthill Architect removed a narrow, awkward stair and replaced it with an open, light filled entry lined with a two-story wall of books. This giant assembly of custom millwork marries a floating stair, book shelves, entry seating bench, workspace beneath the stair, and a glass “bridge” that gives access to the primary bedroom, allows light down into the entry below, and provides endless entertainment for the kids and pets!

Built in 1853, this landmark townhouse suffered from decades of neglect. The new residence combines original materials such as the wide plank subfloors discovered beneath warped and rotted parquet with new insertions like the parlor floor steel structure and barn door. Energy conservation modifications including a fluid applied air barrier, continuous exterior wall insulation and a pair of compact boilers are hidden behind new interior finishes. Completed in 2011 this 4 BR, 3 1/2 bath custom home is situated on a very tight urban infill lot in Northern, Virginia. Our clients were relocating to the D.C. area from New England and wanted to retain some of the New England vernacular they were familiar with in their new home. Due to heavy zoning restrictions, stylistic CCR's and a large program of almost 7000 sf, our design response is a modern take on a traditional hipped 4-square. We intentionally kept the skin and form of the building simple in order to contain cost and allow for a higher level of interior finish. The main level employs our favorite Great Room scheme that merges cooking, eating and entertaining into one seamless space that flows onto an expansive deck overlooking the rear yard. The entry elevation welcomes guests with a traditional front porch and stone path that passes by a small rain garden. The basement accommodates a guest room, media room, exercise area, and full shop while the upper level orients 2 kid's bedrooms, a Jack-n-Jill bath and the master suite toward a territorial view of the rear yard. All of this program is housed beneath a hipped roof that minimizes the scale of the house while presenting a thoughtful appearance toward the street and neighbors.

Elevated Living in Highland Park ​Blairsville, Georgia — Located in the Highland Park community of North Georgia, “Winding Ridge,” designed by James Knight, combines natural materials with clean, contemporary design for a home that is both functional and well-suited to its mountain setting. ​ Home Details ​ The home includes 5,808 heated square feet, organized to support both everyday living and hosting guests. The exterior features white board-and-batten siding, dark roofing, and warm wood accents for a balanced, modern mountain aesthetic. ​ Main Level: Three bedrooms and three bathrooms provide convenient, stair-free living. Upper Level: The primary suite occupies the entire top floor, offering added privacy and access to a balcony with views of the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains. Lower Level: Two additional bedrooms and two bathrooms create flexible space for guests, extended family, or recreation Practical Connections The layout prioritizes efficiency and organization. A mudroom and laundry room connect the two-car garage to the main living areas, creating a practical transition space. This living room features vaulted ceilings. The stone fireplace surround rises from floor to ceiling, and includes a traditional wooden mantle. The trim around the room is done in white. A ceiling fan hangs from the vaulted ceiling in the center of the room. The sitting area lies beneath the fan, and an area rug marks the area.

This Paradise Model ATU is extra tall and grand! As you would in you have a couch for lounging, a 6 drawer dresser for clothing, and a seating area and closet that mirrors the kitchen. Quartz countertops waterfall over the side of the cabinets encasing them in stone. The custom kitchen cabinetry is sealed in a clear coat keeping the wood tone light. Black hardware accents with contrast to the light wood. A main-floor bedroom- no crawling in and out of bed. The wallpaper was an owner request; what do you think of their choice? The bathroom has natural edge Hawaiian mango wood slabs spanning the length of the bump-out: the vanity countertop and the shelf beneath. The entire bump-out-side wall is tiled floor to ceiling with a diamond print pattern. The shower follows the high contrast trend with one white wall and one black wall in matching square pearl finish. The warmth of the terra cotta floor adds earthy warmth that gives life to the wood. 3 wall lights hang down illuminating the vanity, though durning the day, you likely wont need it with the natural light shining in from two perfect angled long windows. This Paradise model was way customized. The biggest alterations were to remove the loft altogether and have one consistent roofline throughout. We were able to make the kitchen windows a bit taller because there was no loft we had to stay below over the kitchen. This ATU was perfect for an extra tall person. After editing out a loft, we had these big interior walls to work with and although we always have the high-up octagon windows on the interior walls to keep thing light and the flow coming through, we took it a step (or should I say foot) further and made the french pocket doors extra tall. This also made the shower wall tile and shower head extra tall. We added another ceiling fan above the kitchen and when all of those awning windows are opened up, all the hot air goes right up and out.
