Project 3419-1 Outdoor Living Space Screen Porch Deck Porch Bar Minneapolis

This modern home, near Cedar Lake, built in 1900, was originally a corner store. A massive conversion transformed the home into a spacious, multi-level residence in the 1990’s. However, the home’s lot was unusually steep and overgrown with vegetation. In addition, there were concerns about soil erosion and water intrusion to the house. The homeowners wanted to resolve these issues and create a much more useable outdoor area for family and pets. Castle, in conjunction with Field Outdoor Spaces, designed and built a large deck area in the back yard of the home, which includes a detached screen porch and a bar & grill area under a cedar pergola. The previous, small deck was demolished and the sliding door replaced with a window. A new glass sliding door was inserted along a perpendicular wall to connect the home’s interior kitchen to the backyard oasis. The screen house doors are made from six custom screen panels, attached to a top mount, soft-close track. Inside the screen porch, a patio heater allows the family to enjoy this space much of the year. Concrete was the material chosen for the outdoor countertops, to ensure it lasts several years in Minnesota’s always-changing climate. Trex decking was used throughout, along with red cedar porch, pergola and privacy lattice detailing. The front entry of the home was also updated to include a large, open porch with access to the newly landscaped yard. Cable railings from Loftus Iron add to the contemporary style of the home, including a gate feature at the top of the front steps to contain the family pets when they’re let out into the yard. Lake Oswego Kitchen & Bath Remodel

The kitchen and bathrooms in this 20th-Century house in Lake Oswego were given an elegant update. The kitchen was made more spacious for entertaining friends and family. A corner of the space was extended to create more room for an expansive island, an entertainment bar, and storage. The look was completed with dainty pendants, a Taj Mahal quartzite natural stone countertop, and custom cabinets. The bathrooms are deeply relaxing spaces with light hues, a marble shower and floors, and abundant natural light. Project by Portland interior design studio Jenni Leasia Interior Design. Shotwell Residence

Reimagined as a quiet retreat on a mixed-use Mission block, this former munitions depot was transformed into a single-family residence by reworking existing forms. A bunker-like concrete structure was cut in half to form a covered patio that opens onto a new central courtyard. The residence behind was remodeled around a large central kitchen, with a combination skylight/hatch providing ample light and roof access. The multiple structures are tied together by untreated cedar siding, intended to gradually fade to grey to match the existing concrete and corrugated steel.

Modular concrete blocks are a perfect application for a commercial situation. This project provided access to a secondary door and mechanical area while creating an aesthetically pleasing patio are complete with opportunity for plantings. In addition, the concrete material is long lasting and lower in maintenance costs.

Contemporary Kitchen Remodel

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was the remodeling contractor for this beautiful Waukesha first floor remodel. The homeowners recently purchased the home and wanted to immediately update the space. The old kitchen was outdated and closed off from the great room. The goal was to design an open-concept space for hosting family and friends. LAYOUT The first step was to remove the awkward dining room walls. This made the room feel large and open. We tucked the refrigerator into a wall of cabinets so it didn’t impose. Seating at the island and peninsula makes the kitchen very versatile. DESIGN We created an elegant entertaining space to take advantage of the lake view. The Waukesha homeowners wanted a contemporary design with neutral colors and finishes. They chose soft gray lower cabinets and white upper cabinets. We added texture with wood accents and a herringbone marble backsplash tile. The desk area features a walnut butcher block countertop. We also used walnut for the open shelving, detail on the hood and the legs on the island. CUSTOM CABINETRY Frameless custom cabinets maximize storage in this Waukesha kitchen. The upper cabinets have hidden light rail molding. Angled plug molding eliminates outlets on the backsplash. Drawers in the lower cabinets allow for excellent storage. The cooktop has a functioning top drawer with a hidden apron to hide the guts of the cooktop. The clients also asked for a home office desk area and pantry cabinet.

Situated on the shore of newfound lake in central new hampshire, this outdoor retreat looks west over the spring fed waters toward the mountains beyond. Our design intent was to provide the homeowners with a viewing perspective that captured the feel of lakefront living. The fire pit terrace, situated on a plane aligned with the home’s main floor, uses native granite from a nearby quarry to create a refined campfire retreat. This carefully calculated elevation makes the upper plateau appear to jut out into the lake. A quick walk down a grass path with granite lawn treads brings us to a private beach for lounging and water access. Transitioning from refined to rustic successfully makes the landscape feel cohesive and inviting.

Ulrich Designer: Bonnie Hufnagel Photography by Peter Rymwid Our client wanted an accessible master bath that did not look accessible. We added a universal height toilet and a decorative grab bar that looks like a towel bar by the toilet. We also designed the counter to be shallow but long, providing accessibility as well as functional surface space, plus an attractive aesthetic! To add to the appeal of the overall bath space we invited more natural light into the small room via a new window outside the shower, and a glass panel adjacent to the window that allows the light into the shower. Glass block inside the shower contributes additional light flow and interest to the shower enclosure. The natural color palette of the room, and with touches like faux painting on the baseboard heat cover to match the walls, makes everything blend comfortably together and gives a clean, seamless and calming backdrop to the room.
