This complete home remodel and addition began with the owners desire to renovate and update the original forty year old vacation home and features. The client was recommended to us by their friends who had hired us to remodel a vacation home in Carmel Valley. We began by selecting Jim Stroupe, a highly qualified local Architect, to devise an entirely new front facade and interior layout. He met with the client and quickly proposed a design which captured the Baja California look she had in mind. With a few revisions and another client meeting, we soon had a finished set of plans. Design ideas for a large mediterranean partial sun backyard landscaping in San Diego for spring.

The transformation of this home was extensive. We removed walls, creating connectivity between rooms and an updated open concept floor plan. We did a complete redesign the layout of the kitchen, tripling the size, storage, and counter space for the whole family to enjoy. We created a built-in bar in the dining room and separate media room, opening up the entertaining options for both kids and adults. For the finishes throughout, the family was able to capture their love of Spanish and old-world design. We used warm neutral colors for the pallet, antique and worn textures throughout the surfaces, and pops of color and personality to make it uniquely theirs. Touches of brass and wrought iron in the lighting and railings continued the theme. The enlarged glass door systems and windows all increased the natural light and opened up the viewing area to capture the panoramic ocean view.

Willie & Leslie of Barrington Hills loved the location of their home. Its breathtaking views overlooked a wooded backyard and a captivating lake. They didn’t want to move, but they needed more space. But the house was missing that big family room where everyone could gather, relax and converse, and the house was completely cut off visually from the beautiful outdoor view right outside! They knew what they wanted meant building an addition to their home. "Establishing a direction and a budget is always key in project of this size," Todd said. "This house was screaming for a family room and it didn't have one. Ultimately, it's about working together towards the same goal of a beautiful functional addition." The project consisted of a significant family room addition with an extraordinary vaulted ceiling and floor to ceiling fireplace, a guest suite renovation with a luxury bath, a garage addition, and an adjoining outdoor patio renovation complete with a fantastic built in grilling station. The main goal was to add comfort and space to the existing home that would last their lifetime, and finally allow them to capture the amazing view of the backyard and lake that they never could really enjoy previously. Willie, Leslie and Claudia paid special attention to designing the space to make sure that the footprint of the room did not interfere with the views. Floor to ceiling Pella windows were incorporated into a spectacular window wall to provide plenty of natural light. Vaulted ceilings gave the room a bigger feel and the stunning floor to ceiling masonry fireplace was designed giving the room a rustic, comfortable feel of a Colorado Lodge. Barnwood doors and exposed wooden beams accentuate the crackling fireplace and family gathering space. An oversized statement chandelier bathes the space in soft light once the sun sets and compliments the exposed wood and fireplace perfectly. “It simple elegant and beautiful,” Designer Claudia Pop said. “It is a great family room that captures the views perfectly. They love the fireplace, the barndoors and the openness of the space we designed for the whole family now to enjoy.” And when warm weather beckons, the outdoor patio is a terrific place to spend an evening. Nearly indestructible, they are the only manufactured stone product designed exclusively to withstand high heat in summer and extreme cold temperatures in winter. The family purchased the 1950s ranch on Mullet Lake because their daughter dreamed of being married on its shores. The home would be used for the wedding venue and then as a wedding gift to the young couple. We were originally hired in August 2014 to help with a simple renovation of the home that was to be completed well in advance of the August 2015 wedding date. However, thorough investigation revealed significant issues with the original foundation, floor framing and other critical elements of the home’s structure that made that impossible. Based on this information, the family decided to tear down and build again. So now we were tasked with designing a new home that would embody their daughter’s vision of a storybook home – a vision inspired by another one of our projects that she had toured. To capture this aesthetic, traditional cottage materials such as stone and cedar shakes are accentuated by more materials such as reclaimed barn wood siding and corrugated CORTEN steel accent roofs. Inside, interior finishes include hand-hewn timber accents that frame openings and highlight features like the entrance reading nook. Natural materials shine against white walls and simply furnished rooms. While the house has nods to vintage style throughout, the open-plan kitchen and living area allows for both contemporary living and entertaining. For their master bedroom, David and Dawn decided on a combination of window treatments to give them the greatest light control. Shutters were installed in the bottom section of their window. A blackout-lined, soft cornice captures light at the top of the window and also conceals a motorized blackout roller shade. The roller shade extends all the way to the floor and 5” past the window to minimize light leaks. Decorative drapes with blackout lining capture any remaining light leaking in from the sides of the shade.

Perched on a hill alongside Lake Austin is a modern expression of residential architecture. Stacked and staggered on a terrain, the ‘Big Horn’ project designed by Motif Architects visualizes an adventurous home that nestles within nature. Every level captures stunning views of the lake that kindle its residents to step out for recreational activities and outdoor entertainment. Arriving by a boat would be the perfect entry to this residence, building momentum and curiosity as you step out onto the docks.

Opening up the main area in the basement and changes to the floor plan resulted in two rear bedrooms that maximize sleeping capacity (a must for our client), while also allowing the most natural movement throughout the space. Custom doors throughout detract from the varying ceiling heights and add drama to the space, drawing the eye up. The first bedroom was created using the former living space and offers maximum sleeping capacity. With two queen beds, this room offers everything guests need, complete with a custom, built-in nightstand that camouflages what was previously an unsightly, but necessary gas shutoff. This 1920s basement’s low ceilings and ductwork were seamlessly integrated throughout the space. In this bedroom, we were especially concerned with a small section of ductwork and how to integrate into the design. Lacking a closet space, a simple section of black pipe creates a natural spot to hang clothing, while also feeling cohesive with the overall design and use of pipe detail in common areas. The second bedroom features more sleeping space, with custom doors (in place of existing bi-fold doors) that allow the closet to function better and a bonus door that blends into the design, while providing access to another basement necessity - the water shutoff. A simple reorientation of the existing bed opened up the space and made it feel completely different. Bold wallpaper captures the homeowners’ design vibe and spirit while integrating existing pieces from throughout their home to complete the design and further capture the client’s style.
