The client’s request was quite common - a typical 2800 sf builder home with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living space, and den. However, their desire was for this to be “anything but common.” The result is an innovative update on the production home for the modern era, and serves as a direct counterpoint to the neighborhood and its more conventional suburban housing stock, which focus views to the backyard and seeks to nullify the unique qualities and challenges of topography and the natural environment. The Terraced House cautiously steps down the site’s steep topography, resulting in a more nuanced approach to site development than cutting and filling that is so common in the builder homes of the area. The compact house opens up in very focused views that capture the natural wooded setting, while masking the sounds and views of the directly adjacent roadway. The main living spaces face this major roadway, effectively flipping the typical orientation of a suburban home, and the main entrance pulls visitors up to the second floor and halfway through the site, providing a sense of procession and privacy absent in the typical suburban home. Clad in a custom rain screen that reflects the wood of the surrounding landscape - while providing a glimpse into the interior tones that are used. The stepping “wood boxes” rest on a series of concrete walls that organize the site, retain the earth, and - in conjunction with the wood veneer panels - provide a subtle organic texture to the composition. The interior spaces wrap around an interior knuckle that houses public zones and vertical circulation - allowing more private spaces to exist at the edges of the building. The windows get larger and more frequent as they ascend the building, culminating in the upstairs bedrooms that occupy the site like a tree house - giving views in all directions. The Terraced House imports urban qualities to the suburban neighborhood and seeks to elevate the typical approach to production home construction, while being more in tune with modern family living patterns. An 8 ft. simple teak wood finish main door gives way to a cozy living room doused in natural light streaming from a large window and a cute-as-a-button balconette. The wall between this room and the kitchen has been demolished and the open kitchen now effectively makes this living space appear larger. We laid wooden look tiles on the floor, pre-cut into 4 pieces and organized in the herringbone pattern. This is not only spread across the studio but also seeps up the living room main wall. Upon this wall, hangs an artwork specially commissioned to a young artist to be evocative yet flaunt the yellow and blue that ties the otherwise somber colours together. Below this is a long chesterfield sofa in electric blue, an armchair upholstered in hounds-tooth with a gold, black and wooden frame. A wood and black glass center table set and a yellow and wooden side table set complete the seating set up. A custom rug in colours of our choice brings a touch of elegance to the room. Beside this is a white and wood console table with a round gold and wood finish mirror. A black skirting flows throughout the walls with a wood detailing as an added design detail.

Inspiration for a cottage breakfast nook remodel in Atlanta

This one is near and dear to my heart. Not only is it in my own backyard, it is also the first remodel project I've gotten to do for myself! This space was previously a detached two car garage in our backyard. Seeing it transform from such a utilitarian, dingy garage to a bright and cheery little retreat was so much fun and so rewarding! This space was slated to be an AirBNB from the start and I knew I wanted to design it for the adventure seeker, the savvy traveler, and those who appreciate all the little design details . My goal was to make a warm and inviting space that our guests would look forward to coming back to after a full day of exploring the city or gorgeous mountains and trails that define the Pacific Northwest. I also wanted to make a few bold choices, like the hunter green kitchen cabinets or patterned tile, because while a lot of people might be too timid to make those choice for their own home, who doesn't love trying it on for a few days?At the end of the day I am so happy with how it all turned out!

Soaring 20 feet from the lower-level floor to the underside of the main floor ceiling, this 2017 home features a magnificent wall constructed of split-faced Indiana limestone of varying heights. This feature wall is the perfect backdrop for the magnificent black steel and stained white oak floating stairway. The linear pattern of the stone was matched from outside to inside by talented stone masons to laser perfection. The recess cove in the ceiling provides wall washing hidden LED lighting to highlight this feature wall.

This small bathroom has lots of drama! The metal sconces create a beautiful printed pattern on the lightly striated wallpaper. The vanity adds to the rustic charm while the extra long custom shower curtain provides just the right amount of color. Brad Knipstein was the photographer.

This opulent powder room is clad in contemporary white lacquered molding and features stainless steel trim accents in modern wainscoting. The walls feature a white marble mosaic with an inlay pattern that is framed in the matching white lacquer and stainless trim. The rock-crystal backlit mirror and white vanity are set in this beautiful background.

This bathroom upgrade features a neutral palate of textural whites and gray/black. The deep soaking tub adds a touch of luxury and the patterned inlay mirror pulls the finishes together nicely.
