A sweeping row of premium chaise lounges with crisp white cushions lines one side of the pool, shaded by a series of elegant teak-framed market umbrellas that bring a Riviera-resort sensibility to the suburban backyard. The stone hardscape tells a particularly rich material story. Dry-stacked natural stone retaining walls curve generously around the lower elevation of the pool, their warm amber, rust, and gray tones echoing the travertine patio above and connecting the pool structure organically to the sloped terrain. Stone steps with flagstone treads descend gracefully between levels, and large natural boulders are thoughtfully placed throughout the landscaping — giving the entire environment the feeling of a discovered natural water feature rather than a constructed pool. A dedicated outdoor living room sits on the patio, anchored by a woven-rope lounge chair and a coordinating sofa with generous cream cushions, gathered around a sculptural concrete pedestal side table. The furniture selection — organic, tactile, and resort-caliber — creates a seating area that feels as comfortable and considered as any indoor living room, with the forest canopy serving as a natural ceiling above. Around the corner, a separate fire pit terrace provides a second distinct outdoor destination. A massive circular stone fire pit — built from the same dry-stacked natural stone as the retaining walls — sits at the center of a gathering space ringed by weathered teak Adirondack-style chairs with white cushions. This zone feels intentionally removed from the pool's energy, offering a quieter, more intimate space for evening gatherings and cooler nights. The house itself — a stunning modern farmhouse with white board-and-batten siding, exposed timber gable trusses, black-framed windows, and a covered back porch with timber posts — anchors the entire composition. The architecture and the landscape speak the same language: natural materials, clean lines, and an effortless relationship between indoor and outdoor living. A family with a deep love for nature envisioned a place where generations of their family could come together, connect with nature, and create lasting memories. The master plan was to create a family campus featuring a main house for gathering, three "sibling" cottages, a boathouse, and a dock. The composition for each of these structures is to live, as a family, independently and also in relation to each other. The design revolves around the concept of coexistence with nature, catering to clients who lead an active outdoor lifestyle. The design aims to blur the interior spaces and the surrounding Maine landscape.

Dwellist had the honor of collaborating with Shaafi, a Netherlands resident, to bring his vision to life – the construction of his dream house in the idyllic town of Uthamapalyam, near Theni. With a deep-rooted passion for creating a haven that would cater to his aging parents' needs, as well as provide a rental unit and ample space for his own family and his brother. Shaafi entrusted our skilled team to design a residence that would surpass all expectations. Shaafi's utmost concern was the well-being and mobility of his parents within the house. Our team prioritized their needs by incorporating thoughtful features for convenience and accessibility. The design also called for a spacious 3 BHK unit to accommodate both Shaafi's and his brother's families. Considering Shaafi's occasional visits to Uthamapalyam (2 to 3 months per year), we also addressed his desire for rental units on the first floor. The primary focus of our team was on creating a ground-floor residence that prioritized accessibility for elderly. We incorporated barrier-free pathways, spacious doorways, and various amenities to enhance their comfort. Additionally, we designed a rental unit on the first floor, ensuring privacy and independence for tenants while promoting harmonious coexistence with the main residents. The unit was meticulously planned to ensure essential amenities, optimal functionality, and a focus on aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. Natural lighting, efficient ventilation systems, and energy-saving features were integrated to enhance the living experience while minimizing environmental impact. Embrace a 1940 farmhouse where rustic charm and modern elegance coexist in perfect harmony for the family of 5. We harmonized the home’s robust heritage with modern design, revealing a custom entry that leads to a new primary suite, visually enhancing the façade while expanding the living space. The redesign extends into a vibrant open floor plan to enhance family interactions. The heart of the home kitchen hosts soft white cabinetry and natural light to dance on warm wood accents and an inviting island. The bathroom is adorned with dark, dramatic hues complemented by the warmth of wood and marble.

This project was driven by a commitment to sustainability and repurposing existing materials, seamlessly blending the old with the new while minimizing waste. The goal was to transform the backyard into a lush garden oasis with a low-water and low-maintenance design. Despite challenges posed by the property's proximity to the golf course and specific guidelines, a harmonious integration of desert plant life and low-water lush plants was achieved. Reusing existing materials and replacing natural grass with synthetic turf minimized water usage, while strategic plant placement utilized run-off water for sustainable irrigation. Navigating the constraints imposed by the Country Club, the project created a cohesive outdoor space and repurposed cobblestones to bridge the gap between the golf course and the rear of the property. This project achieved a balance between ecological consciousness and aesthetic beauty, allowing the garden oasis to coexist harmoniously with the golf course backdrop, providing the clients with a serene and vibrant landscape that aligns with their vision and respects the natural resources of the community.

This was a complete master bathroom remodel. The client wanted the space to have a traditional style with a French country feel. The countertops golden accents and the polished chrome fixtures go hand in hand to achieve the soft glam look the client requested. Separate vanities are suitable for partners wishing to coexist while having their own space. A young couple arrived in Lisbon amid the pandemic to start the next chapter of their life together. They were welcomed by a quieted city, with renewed appreciation for its own natural beauty, and happened upon a recently reconstructed apartment with a broad river view. All that remained was to select suitable furnishings to transform the spacious top-floor duplex into their own comfortable home. In the airy living area, a Poul Cadovius teak shelving system is the central display and entertainment center, drawing the eye toward the riverscape. The verticality is countered by sofa-chaise seating atop a Portugese-produced rug, plus a reclining armchair whose color takes cues from the plentiful plants. Playful, vintage lamps illuminate in accents, after the pastels of sunset fade beyond the bridge. Entertaining runs through the couple’s veins, one of which built a career in wine and hospitality, so within reach of the intimate dining table is a built-in bar with bountiful bottle storage. The mezzanine above serves the other partner’s dance and somatic practices with made-to-measure wall mirror and upholstered floor mats. Hidden away is the adjacent master suite, its billowy bed encircled by clean, concealed clothing storage for uncluttered repose. The downstairs guest bedroom is modest so its walls reflect the day’s changing light. A bespoke bed with contiguous floating nightstands, proportions inspired by Cadovius, offers peaceful respite. Bedside pendants were hand crafted by a local ceramicist, imparting an organic touch to otherwise sleek lines of wood and metalwork. Across the hall, work and rest coexist: an extra writing module from the shelving system and a classic Eames task chair make a workstation, while a custom-designed pull-out daybed accommodates naps and extra visitors. When our long-time clients, decidedly urban dwellers, de-camped from the city to the suburbs in 2019, we helped them remake their “too-traditional” new house into a home that better fit their style. A recently-completed house by a developer, we set-out from day one to sprinkle their preferred contemporary, more-urban-than-suburban style throughout the spaces. All without major architectural changes. We changed all the decorative lighting and doors throughout the home to allow the architecture to better align with their style. The home is now layered with clean-lines, modern fabrics, vibrant colors, and contemporary art. The result is the perfect coexistence of contemporary and traditional – without letting either feel out of place.

A floating marble bench seamlessly blends into the wall, offering a practical resting spot while maintaining an open, spacious feel. The wall tiles feature striking marble veining that flows organically, creating visual harmony throughout. Below, a basketweave mosaic floor tile adds depth and texture while providing a slip-resistant surface. The combination of clean lines and natural tones results in a sophisticated, spa-inspired retreat. Sleek chrome fixtures add a contemporary edge, balancing the classic marble aesthetic. This refined detail is a perfect example of how luxury and functionality coexist in this serene shower design.

Blending old and new pieces, transforming what exists, and creating something entirely new. This Kitchen project was heavy on both style and function. From a massive L shaped island bench with double wide passage around it, to the hammered metal range hood with digital controls, style and function coexist at the apex of fine design.

In order to make this Naperville kitchen larger and more functional, we opened up the tiny mudroom entry into the kitchen to make space for a large island and range. Collaborating with Chad Esslinger Design for the interior design, we added these details so that the kitchen and entryway can coexist seamlessly.
