Renovation of an existing house included small adjustments to the rooflines to make a much more modern expression inspired by Scandinavian architecture. Minimal trim around windows and corners also helps the pure geometric forms emerge. While still respecting the scale and the origins of the local style, it is unmistakably distinct. Its complementary black box master suite with roof deck creates a contrast with the more traditional, iconic house shapes in white. The result is a house that is familiar and comfortable while at the same time challenging our ideas about what a house should be.

Renovation is stressful. Wouldn’t it be nice to let someone else oversee product selections, manage day-to-day issues, and bring your project to a successful completion? The owners of a two-family in Arlington recently did just that, flying off to Florida just as we began renovating their first floor unit. Of course, before they left we thoroughly discussed all aspects of the work order, which included renovating the kitchen and bathroom, painting the bedroom, and adding a laundry closet. We reviewed color and material selections, and set up a schedule for regular briefings. A handful of issues did come up. But because we had planned ahead, we were able to resolve them with very little stress for our clients. For instance, the client had chosen a bright yellow paint color for the kitchen walls, but once the new cabinets, countertop, and flooring had been installed, it was clear that yellow would clash. We suggested a more complementary Benjamin Moore Lancaster Whitewash shade instead. In the bathroom, the clients had selected a deep inset mirrored medicine cabinet. But when the wall behind the vanity was opened, it revealed a pipe running up the wall, too close for the inset model. In this small space, a bump-out medicine cabinet would be awkward, so instead we placed a mirror over the sink and two smaller inset cabinets on either side – a solution that pleased the homeowners, who now have his-and-hers storage spaces. Finally, the homeowners had resigned themselves to the fact that the laundry closet would be too small for storing detergent and other needs. However once the units were in place, we realized that a small custom shelf could be built and had it installed to the delight of the homeowners. Photo by Shelly Harrison

We were pleased to be brought in on this penthouse renovation in the heart of Bucktown, Chicago. Homeowners said goodbye to dated oak cabinets and wasted space, and now enjoy a beautiful, functional new kitchen with two complementary cabinet colors. Brooke, a designer on staff with Today's StarMark Custom Cabinetry, designed this transitional kitchen with StarMark Cabinetry's Farmington door style in Oak finished in two cabinet colors: Mushroom with Chocolate glaze for the island, and Mocha for the perimeter cabinets. Brooke specified the cabinet pulls from Berenson Hardware. The countertops are HanStone quartz on the island in a color called Auburn Abyss, and Formica 180fx laminate for the perimeter cabinets in a color called Lapidus Brown, fabricated with the Dakota edge. Kirk Bianchi created this resort like setting for a couple from Mexico City. They were looking for a contemporary twist on traditional themes, and Luis Barragán was the inspiration. The outer walls were painted a darker color to recede, while floating panels of color and varying heights provided sculptural interest and opportunities for lighting and shadow.

The home, built in the mid ’90s, needed an update. However, the family wanted to keep the renovations neutral enough to accommodate future changes and transformations. They had several project goals, including: * Eliminate the family’s dining room table * Add additional storage * Create the new kitchen design within the footprint of their existing floor plan * Make the refrigerator more easily accessible To accomplish this, we removed the clunky dining room table and integrated seating into the home’s kitchen island. To remedy their storage woes we installed three large pantry cabinets. We also relocated the fridge for easier access. To add some style to the space, the family upgraded their cabinets to Showplace cabinets featuring the freeport door style in lyptus wood with a truffle finish. They replaced their existing countertops with Cambria Canterbury and installed a complementary Elkay granite sink.

This kitchen was recently finished for LionFish Developments and features our Manhattan door in white “Oyster” painted finish. For the perimeter countertop we used 2 complementary countertop colours: Caesarstone “Blizzard” and Caesarstone “Statuario Nuvo”. The vanity, features a modern Cirrus door with a Rye Walnut finish and a Caesarstone “Pure White” countertop.

In keeping with the grand Palladian architectural style of the Pondbank House, the landscape architect has created an impressive series of complementary Mediterranean garden spaces using local stone for terracing and High Plains adapted plants. In addition to a kitchen and cutting garden and diverse planting schemes featuring over 250 species, there are many delightful pieces of garden art and creative garden details. Decorative fountain walls distribute roof and storm drainage to terraced plantings. An infinity lawn edge creates a “ha-ha” effect from the pool terrace to the borrowed landscape in the distance. A lovely moon gate leads to a secluded Japanese-style spa garden, an “aromabo” for contemplative relaxation and outdoor aromatherapy. This 1956 John Calder Mackay home had been poorly renovated in years past. We kept the 1400 sqft footprint of the home, but re-oriented and re-imagined the bland white kitchen to a midcentury olive green kitchen that opened up the sight lines to the wall of glass facing the rear yard. We chose materials that felt authentic and appropriate for the house: handmade glazed ceramics, bricks inspired by the California coast, natural white oaks heavy in grain, and honed marbles in complementary hues to the earth tones we peppered throughout the hard and soft finishes. This project was featured in the Wall Street Journal in April 2022.

Our studio reimagined this kitchen to make it suitable for entertaining family and friends. We altered the layout to an open-concept floor plan and changed the yellowish paint to a beautiful white, creating a bright, airy vibe. The elegant dark wood floors were retained, and complementary design elements were added to make the flooring pop. The stunning countertops perform a dual function as backsplash tiles, creating a harmonious ambiance in the space. We added gorgeous chairs and stylish pendants with a gold finish that adds a glamorous touch. We carved a beautiful home bar in the space with open concept shelving and charcoal black lower cabinets for storage.
