Inspiration for a large transitional backyard stone patio remodel in Toronto

The family room was conceived as a double-height architectural volume anchored by a monolithic stone fireplace and integrated millwork niches. Ceiling pitch, vertical planes, and material transitions were addressed during the design selection phase to ensure the scale of the architecture remained balanced once furnished. Soft, low-profile seating was selected to maintain clear sightlines across the room while allowing the fireplace surround and wood-lined alcoves to remain the primary focal elements. The furniture plan creates a structured conversational arrangement without interrupting circulation or visual flow. Textural layering — woven upholstery, stone, wood paneling, and subtle metal accents — reinforces warmth within the height and openness of the space. The result is a family room that reads as composed architecture first, furnishing second: grounded, scaled, and designed to support both gathering and daily use without visual noise.

HBK photography this bright, refreshing dining room is composed of a collection of simple geometrics: the clean, rectangular oak table surrounded by timeless, circular wishbone chairs; the framed senagalese hexagon-motif textile, designed to include both positive and negative stars; the half dome pendant light; the antique oval mirror and the ceramic vessels in a variety of rounded and cylindrical silhouettes. the quiet palette of warm, light woods and crisp whites is punctuated by the graphic black framed textile art. in all, the space is an inviting, eclectic mix of linear and spherical, vintage and modern, dark and light.

Honey stained oak flooring gives way to flagstone in this modern sunken den, a space capped in fine fashion by an ever-growing square pattern of stained alder. Coordinating stained trim punctuates the ivory ceiling and walls that provide a warm backdrop for a contemporary artwork in shades of orange, alabaster and green and a metal brutalist style wall hanging. A modern brass floor lamp stands to the side of the almond chenille sofa that sports graphic print pillows in chocolate and orange. Resting on an off-white and gray Moroccan rug, an acacia root cocktail table displays a large knotted accessory made of graphite stained wood. A glass side table with gold base is home to a c.1960s lamp with an orange pouring glaze and cream shade. A faux fur throw pillow is tucked into a side chair stained dark walnut and upholstered in tone on tone stripes. The fireplace an Ortal Space Creator 120 is surrounded in cream concrete and serves to divide the den from the dining area while allowing light to filter through. Bronze metal sliding doors open wide to allow easy access to the covered porch while creating a great space for indoor/outdoor entertaining.

At the foyer, a modern console table made of glass, stainless steel and slices of wood log welcome to the open living room. Above the modern console table a round mirror in gold and silver leaf add light and reflection. On the opposite wall, a stunning mural wallpaper creates the focal point of this modern living room. Featuring an abstract pattern in golden yellow, rust and slate. This mural is the backdrop behind the modern Italian design white leather sectional. The coffee table is made of reclaimed railway wood and stainless steel. Around this living room swivel lounge chairs upholstered in yellow faux leather add the pop of color to this scheme. A combination of sheer and Neolux Shades compose the custom made window treatments. All furniture, furnishings and accessories were provided by MH2G Furniture. This table was designed for a client who was interested in a table using antique reclaimed wood, contrasted with modern hairpin legs. He wanted two benches to go with the table made from the same reclaimed wood and using the hairpin legs. The tabletop is composed of solid slow-growth white oak trimmed with 1 1/4" of the same. Much of the wood used for the tabletop and both benches are quartersawn. Dimension of the dining table are 7' X 30" The Benches are 6'6" long by 10" wide. The Hairpin Legs are composed of unfinished steel. All wood in this project is 100% solid slow-growth white oak reclaimed from a horse barn in central KY. Finished in dark walnut danish oil

This home in Napa off Silverado was rebuilt after burning down in the 2017 fires. Architect David Rulon, a former associate of Howard Backen, known for this Napa Valley industrial modern farmhouse style. Composed in mostly a neutral palette, the bones of this house are bathed in diffused natural light pouring in through the clerestory windows. Beautiful textures and the layering of pattern with a mix of materials add drama to a neutral backdrop. The homeowners are pleased with their open floor plan and fluid seating areas, which allow them to entertain large gatherings. The result is an engaging space, a personal sanctuary and a true reflection of it's owners' unique aesthetic. Inspirational features are metal fireplace surround and book cases as well as Beverage Bar shelving done by Wyatt Studio, painted inset style cabinets by Gamma, moroccan CLE tile backsplash and quartzite countertops.

This bathroom features a custom floating vanity, recessed into a drywall niche. Shelves framed in matching wood are tucked into either side of this niche and provide tons of additional storage. A large custom vanity mirror is framed by navy herringbone tiles and gold fixtures. This herringbone tile is repeated on the shower walls, while the shower floor is composed of large tiles cut into triangular shapes to promote drainage while minimizing grout lines. The sleek soaking tub is a great place to unwind from a busy day in a soothing, spa-like environment.

N44° 56' 06" is a minimal and modern home centered around views and access to Bde Maka Ska (former Lake Calhoun). Carved into the lot, a tuck under garage provides storage for vehicles and lake toys while preserving the front of the home for an elevated porch with lake views. A rear patio and rooftop deck offer entertainment space with scenes of the Minneapolis skyline and the lake as a backdrop. Custom metal louvers accent the front and rear of the home acting as window privacy buffers and a staircase to the roof deck. The forms and materials remain modest to let the crisp lines compose balance between the modern structure and the exterior accents.

Blending contemporary forms and lush plantings, this Garden maximizes the sensory experience of the materials and planting from inside and outside the home. The garden occupies an interior courtyard framed by four interior walls. The home, designed by Architect Cliff May was built in 1948 and the following year was featured in House Beautiful Magazine. The clients list of needs and desires was brief. They wanted a space that would complement the mid century modern home and provide visual interest from inside the home. Some form of water was also requested. They had a budget of $30,000. In order to stay within their budget the clients performed the demolition of the old garden. The designer’s intent was to create a garden that would possess a clear sculptural quality and would be as visually striking from inside the home as it would be from inside the courtyard. The strategy behind the design was to use hardscape materials characterized by simple geometric forms and a planting palette that would emphasize form over color, and then to arrange the materials to achieve an interpretation of modern aesthetic. The views from inside the homes three main living rooms present the garden as a graphic composition of space, hardscape materials and planting. Inside the courtyard the edges are defined by stone and planting. The floor is composed of rectangular slabs of Teakwood flagstone with a counterpoint of Mexican beach pebbles set within the joints and around the edges. Concrete along the edges of the Teakwood pads reduces migration of the modified stone and sand base. The contrast of the Mexican beach pebbles accentuates the pattern of the flagstone. The outside perimeter of the pebbles is contained with low profile edging. An existing catch drain was utilized for storm water runoff. A concrete block pier set on a concrete footing is covered with black stucco and provides a perch for a custom made copper bowl that circulates water into the L shaped water feature. The water features subterranean basin is constructed of pressure treated wood with a custom box liner insert. Since the Teakwood flagstone was unavailable as coping for the water feature, the designer chose Shawnee Buff stone to complement the Teakwood flagstone. The subtle sound of water spilling from the copper bowl and the reflective qualities of the water help to create an atmosphere of relaxation. The planting is composed of shades of green with white flowers in order to accentuate the graphic design. ‘Justin Brouwer’ Boxwood, ‘Sum and Substance’ Hosta, white Anemones, black bamboo and ornamental grasses contrast dramatically with the clean lines of the hardscape elements. The black bamboo is set in 30” diameter concrete containers to control the vigorous plant from spreading. The construction of the interior courtyard space challenged the building team. They set up baffles between the front door and the door to the courtyard as well as temporary protection over the floor to allow the process to move forward without too much disturbance to the client’s lives. All of the materials were shuffled through the temporary portal. The clients love the space and recently said that “the design is so well thought out and simple that they would never get tired of it.” The designs sculptural quality compliments the modern feel of the home and creates a sublime yet dramatic view from within the house or within the courtyard. The clients plan to purchase two black Bertoia Diamond chairs with red cushions which should perfectly integrate with the space.

Situated within a one-acre lot in Austin’s Tarry Trail neighborhood, the backyard of this existing 1933- vintage historical house was underutilized. The owners felt that the main drawbacks of the existing backyard were a general disconnection between each outdoor area and a general lack of relationship to the house proper. Therefore, the primary goal of the redesign was a scheme that would promote the use of the outdoor zones, with the pool as a centerpiece. The first major design move was to frame the pool with a new structure as a backdrop. This cabana is perpendicular to the main house and creates a clear “bookend” to the upper level deck while housing indoor and outdoor activities. Under the cabana’s overhang, an integrated seating space offers a balance of sunlight and shade while an outdoor grill and bar area facilitate the family’s outdoor lifestyle. The only enclosed program exists as a naturally lit perch within the canopy of the trees, providing a serene environment to exercise within the comfort of a climate-controlled space. A corollary focus was to create sectional variation within the volume of the pool to encourage dynamic use at both ends while relating to the interior program of the home. A shallow beach zone for children to play is located near the family room and the access to the play space in the yard below. At the opposite end of the pool, outside the formal living room, another shallow space is made to be a splash-free sunbathing area perfect for enjoying an adult beverage. The functional separation set up by the pool creates a subtle and natural division between the energetic family spaces for playing, lounging, and grilling, and the composed, entertaining and dining spaces. The pool also enhances the formal program of the house by acting as a reflecting pool within a composed view from the front entry that draws visitors to an outdoor dining area under a majestic oak tree. By acting as a connector between the house and the yard, the elongated pool bridges the day-to-day activities within the house and the lush, sprawling backyard. Planter beds and low walls provide loose constraints to organize the overall outdoor living area, while allowing the space to spill out into the yard. Terraces navigate the sectional change in the landscape, offering a passage to the lower yard where children can play on the grass as the parents lounge by the outdoor fireplace.
