As written in Northern Home & Cottage by Elizabeth Edwards In general, Bryan and Connie Rellinger loved the charm of the old cottage they purchased on a Crooked Lake peninsula, north of Petoskey. Specifically, however, the presence of a live-well in the kitchen (a huge cement basin with running water for keeping fish alive was right in the kitchen entryway, seriously), rickety staircase and green shag carpet, not so much. An extreme renovation was the only solution. The downside? The rebuild would have to fit into the smallish nonconforming footprint. The upside? That footprint was built when folks could place a building close enough to the water to feel like they could dive in from the house. Ahhh... Stephanie Baldwin of Edgewater Design helped the Rellingers come up with a timeless cottage design that breathes efficiency into every nook and cranny. It also expresses the synergy of Bryan, Connie and Stephanie, who emailed each other links to products they liked throughout the building process. That teamwork resulted in an interior that sports a young take on classic cottage. Highlights include a brass sink and light fixtures, coffered ceilings with wide beadboard planks, leathered granite kitchen counters and a way-cool floor made of American chestnut planks from an old barn. Thanks to an abundant use of windows that deliver a grand view of Crooked Lake, the home feels airy and much larger than it is. Bryan and Connie also love how well the layout functions for their family - especially when they are entertaining. The kids' bedrooms are off a large landing at the top of the stairs - roomy enough to double as an entertainment room. When the adults are enjoying cocktail hour or a dinner party downstairs, they can pull a sliding door across the kitchen/great room area to seal it off from the kids' ruckus upstairs (or vice versa!). The floors are white marble and the marble is brought up to wainscot height in the water closet with a heavy chair rail in a matching white marble. Above the chair rail is a gorgeous tone on tone damask wallpaper. The freestanding tub sits in front of a custom designed floor length mirror. White marble chair rail pieces were used to craft the outer portion of the frame and mother of pearl mosaics were used for the inner frame and then completed with a small piece of chair ail. The mosaic tile is repeated behind the vanities in lieu of the standard 4” marble backsplash and topped with a pencil rail out of marble. The double cabinets on each end of the vanities allow for plentiful storage and offer the opportunity to create a valance connecting the two. The depth allows for recessed lighting to be tucked out of site and just a sliver of trim finishes off the edges of the mirror. The barrel tray is magically transformed into a soft pearlized finish with just a hint of color swirled magically, reflecting beautifully with the enhancement of rope lighting hidden by the cove molding. Architectural designer, Nicole Delaney worked her magic again as always. Schonbek crystal chandeliers and sconces adorn the bath and quality of the crystal is noted by the colors created by the prisms dancing so gloriously around the room. Behind the mirror are double entrances into a steam shower. Laser-cut listello and custom designed wall panel from Renaissance Tile adorn the walls and niches of which there are several at various heights. The silk rug is from Stark and the ottoman was brought from their previous home and is from the Baker furniture line. A beautiful inlay tray from BoJay designs holds multiple bath products. This whole home renovation was a transformation of the main and upper floors, a garage conversion and a complete exterior facelift. The original garage was converted into a large practical mudroom, powder room, laundry and TV rooms. The walls between the kitchen, living and dining room were removed and a full island, bar area and a 6’ pantry were added. Shaker style cabinets in off white contrast with charcoal espresso cabinets for a dramatic effect in the kitchen. Hand scraped hickory hardwoods add durability and provide a solid foundation for the Ledgestone gas burning fireplace. Upstairs the master features floor to ceiling wall cabinets eliminating the need for a bureau. The ensuite is a beautiful retreat with a closed off water closet, double vanity and glass enclosed shower.

Here we created space off the cliff with a composite deck that sites 10 plus feet above the slope below.

Honey stained oak flooring gives way to flagstone in this modern sunken den, a space capped in fine fashion by an ever-growing square pattern of stained alder. Coordinating stained trim punctuates the ivory ceiling and walls that provide a warm backdrop for a contemporary artwork in shades of orange, alabaster and green and a metal brutalist style wall hanging. A modern brass floor lamp stands to the side of the almond chenille sofa that sports graphic print pillows in chocolate and orange. Resting on an off-white and gray Moroccan rug, an acacia root cocktail table displays a large knotted accessory made of graphite stained wood. A glass side table with gold base is home to a c.1960s lamp with an orange pouring glaze and cream shade. A faux fur throw pillow is tucked into a side chair stained dark walnut and upholstered in tone on tone stripes. The fireplace an Ortal Space Creator 120 is surrounded in cream concrete and serves to divide the den from the dining area while allowing light to filter through. Bronze metal sliding doors open wide to allow easy access to the covered porch while creating a great space for indoor/outdoor entertaining.

We took on the kitchen, two bathrooms and a powder room. The layout in the kitchen was functional for them, so we kept that pretty much as is. Our client wanted a contemporary-leaning transitional look — nice clean lines with a gray and white palette. Light gray cabinets with a slightly darker gray subway tile keep the northern exposure light and airy. They also purchased some new furniture for their breakfast room and adjoining family room, so the whole space looks completely styled and new. The light fixtures are staggered and give a nice rhythm to the otherwise serene feel. The homeowners were not 100% sold on the flooring choice for little powder room off the kitchen when I first showed it, but now they think it is one of the most interesting features of the design. I always try to “push” my clients a little bit because that’s when things can get really fun and this is what you are paying for after all, ideas that you may not come up with on your own. We also worked on the two upstairs bathrooms. We started first on the hall bath which was basically just in need of a face lift. The floor is porcelain tile made to look like carrera marble. The vanity is white Shaker doors fitted with a white quartz top. We re-glazed the cast iron tub. The master bath was a tub to shower conversion. We used a wood look porcelain plank on the main floor along with a Kohler Tailored vanity. The custom shower has a barn door shower door, and vinyl wallpaper in the sink area gives a rich textured look to the space. Overall, it’s a pretty sophisticated look for its smaller fooprint. Oak give off a warmer, brown coloration that is closer to the tonalities found in Tuscan homes. Our clients came to us with a desire to completely renovate their master bathroom and enlarge the shower. We were able to double the size of the shower in width by taking space from an adjacent room. By not including a shower door, we were able to maximize the full potential of the space. An off set vanity bowl allowed us to provided four functional drawers for plenty of storage. Using a lighter tile in the shower and the floor we were able to create an interesting contrast in the vanity and granite. A whimsical bathroom created for my children, but sophisticated enough to be enjoyed by adults. It is wrapped in an aviary toile, and accented with a bold mirror. The lowest drawer pulls out and has a lid on it. It can hold up to 90 pounds and acts as a stepping stool for young children. When they grow, you can pop off the lid and it returns to full use as a drawer. Home located in Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming.
