Home office - modern home office idea in Singapore

The Atherton House is a family compound for a professional couple in the tech industry, and their two teenage children. After living in Singapore, then Hong Kong, and building homes there, they looked forward to continuing their search for a new place to start a life and set down roots. The site is located on Atherton Avenue on a flat, 1 acre lot. The neighboring lots are of a similar size, and are filled with mature planting and gardens. The brief on this site was to create a house that would comfortably accommodate the busy lives of each of the family members, as well as provide opportunities for wonder and awe. Views on the site are internal. Our goal was to create an indoor- outdoor home that embraced the benign California climate. The building was conceived as a classic “H” plan with two wings attached by a double height entertaining space. The “H” shape allows for alcoves of the yard to be embraced by the mass of the building, creating different types of exterior space. The two wings of the home provide some sense of enclosure and privacy along the side property lines. The south wing contains three bedroom suites at the second level, as well as laundry. At the first level there is a guest suite facing east, powder room and a Library facing west. The north wing is entirely given over to the Primary suite at the top level, including the main bedroom, dressing and bathroom. The bedroom opens out to a roof terrace to the west, overlooking a pool and courtyard below. At the ground floor, the north wing contains the family room, kitchen and dining room. The family room and dining room each have pocketing sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. Connecting the wings is a double high living space meant to be comfortable, delightful and awe-inspiring. A custom fabricated two story circular stair of steel and glass connects the upper level to the main level, and down to the basement “lounge” below. An acrylic and steel bridge begins near one end of the stair landing and flies 40 feet to the children’s bedroom wing. People going about their day moving through the stair and bridge become both observed and observer. The front (EAST) wall is the all important receiving place for guests and family alike. There the interplay between yin and yang, weathering steel and the mature olive tree, empower the entrance. Most other materials are white and pure. The mechanical systems are efficiently combined hydronic heating and cooling, with no forced air required.

The owners of this beautiful Johnson County home wanted to refresh their lower level powder room as well as create a new space for storing outdoor clothes and shoes. Arlene Ladegaard and the Design Connection, Inc. team assisted with the transformation in this space with two distinct purposes as part of a much larger project on the first floor remodel in their home. The knockout floral wallpaper in the powder room is the big wow! The homeowners also requested a large floor to ceiling cabinet for the storage area. To enhance the allure of this small space, the design team installed a Java-finish custom vanity with quartz countertops and high-end plumbing fixtures and sconces. Design Connection, Inc. provided; custom-cabinets, wallpaper, plumbing fixtures, a handmade custom mirror from a local company, lighting fixtures, installation of all materials and project management.

Even though this Kansas City kitchen hadn’t seen an update in a quarter-century, the bones were in great shape. You don’t have to completely gut your kitchen in order to achieve a complete transformation; this kitchen is a perfect example! The dated cabinetry was dismantled and darkened with a custom faux paint while the handles and hinges were replaced with updated hardware. Reusing, refurbishing and recycling what we can, like kitchen cabinetry, is not just eco-minded, it’s budget-minded. Wear and tear and years of repeated abuse required the laminate countertops to be removed along with the center island. Those aqua blue tiles had to go! Set on 150 Acres, this sprawling project features an Indoor Oval Pool that connects to an outdoor swimming pool with a 65'0" lap lane. The pools are connected by a moveable swimming pool door that actuates with the turn of a key. The indoor pool house also features an indoor spa and baby pool, and is crowned at one end by a custom Oyster Shell. The Indoor sauna is connected to both main pool sections, and is accessible from the outdoor pool underneath the swim-up grotto and waterfall. The project encompassed the kitchen, family room, dining room, lounge, office, primary bathroom, and supporting circulation spaces, creating a unified experience that feels both expansive and intentional. Throughout the home, refined materials, custom millwork, and carefully curated finishes establish a sense of understated luxury while maintaining warmth and livability. At the heart of the renovation is a completely reconfigured kitchen and gathering space designed around functionality, hospitality, and visual connection. Architectural barriers were removed to improve sightlines and circulation, allowing the kitchen, dining, and family spaces to function as a single integrated living environment. A dramatic five-foot workstation sink anchors the kitchen, while custom cabinetry and furniture-inspired details elevate the space beyond conventional residential design. Adjacent to the kitchen, the former pantry, laundry, and service corridor were reimagined as a hybrid scullery and utility suite, creating a highly functional support space that discreetly accommodates food preparation, storage, organization, and household operations without compromising the elegance of the primary living areas. In the case of new construction, involving architects, home builders, contractors and general contractors, an architect plays a pivotal role in the process. Whether in searching for a building site, or placing a new home well on a building site, architects can give guidance so the end product feels fresh, inviting, and easy instead of forced or contrived.
