Continually Exposed - Photos & Ideas

Dark honed granite tops the island with rustic alder cabinets. Upper cabinets float above the dual-level island that houses the stove and commercial grade ice maker. To give a clean look, the granite continues as a backsplash with outlets located only under the cabinets. The upper cabinets are suspended from the ceiling, which had to be reinforced, by steel pipes that also conceal wiring for the LED under cabinet and in cabinet lighting and under cabinet receptacle power strips. Custom glass shelves and doors in the upper cabinets help to define the dining area from the kitchen while allowing light to filter through. The opposite island contains the sink, dishwasher and an in cabinet microwave drawer. The oversize granite top extends past the cabinets, allowing for casual seating adjacent to the Great Room. Both islands are faced with pre-cast stone that repeats the natural elements of the exterior. Exposed beams with historic warehouse flooring is utilized as the kitchen/dining room ceiling and also the 2nd floor loft/bedroom/bathroom flooring. Since both sides are visible, all planks on the underside had to be individually sanded and hand finished before hidden deck fastener installation. Utilizing the same material as the ceiling, a chase was constructed to allow sub contractors to supply electric, ventilation and the sound system. Cable lighting provides a minimalist look without obstructing any views.

The project continued into the Great Room and was an exercise in creating congruent yet unique spaces with their own specific functions for the family. Cozy yet carefully curated. Refinishing of the floors and beams continued into the Great Room. To add more light, a new window was added and all existing wood window casings and sills were painted white. Additionally the fireplace received a lime wash treatment and a new reclaimed beam mantle.

Great room reveals the full depth of the space, with the dry-stacked fieldstone fireplace now prominent on the right and the open kitchen visible on the left with white cabinetry and a black steel window wall. The entry vestibule reads as a stone-clad alcove framed by black steel doors and flanking windows, with the fieldstone wrapping the interior entry walls for a grounded, tactile transition. Clerestory windows continue across the upper wall, and the exposed rough-sawn beams, crystal chandelier, and round black metal chandelier anchor the double-height volume from above. Looking toward the kitchen from the great room, the open plan stretches into a large island kitchen framed by a soft white archway opening. The island features a natural oak base with dark countertop, flanked by professional stainless appliances and white perimeter cabinetry with a slab marble or quartz backsplash. Navy blue pendant lights hang above the island alongside two crystal tiered chandeliers, continuing the rustic-refined material contrast established throughout. A single exposed rough-sawn beam crosses the foreground ceiling, clerestory windows flank the upper walls on both sides, and the black steel frame door to the stone entry vestibule remains visible on the right. Ice House - Lower Floor

The lower floor of Ice House is organized around an open kitchen and living space that emphasizes material continuity and craft. Custom millwork in Russian birch defines the kitchen, providing warmth and precision within a highly functional layout, while a custom white oak stair acts as a sculptural connector between levels. Venetian plaster walls introduce a soft, tactile surface that contrasts with the exposed timber frame ceiling, maintaining a sense of continuity with the upper level. Polished concrete floors ground the space, reinforcing its durability and understated industrial character while supporting the home’s overall balance of warmth and restraint.

The three-level Mediterranean revival home started as a 1930s summer cottage that expanded downward and upward over time. We used a clean, crisp white wall plaster with bronze hardware throughout the interiors to give the house continuity. A neutral color palette and minimalist furnishings create a sense of calm restraint. Subtle and nuanced textures and variations in tints add visual interest. The stair risers from the living room to the primary suite are hand-painted terra cotta tile in gray and off-white. We used the same tile resource in the kitchen for the island's toe kick.
