To return to the eagles’ nest analogy, she’s most responsible for creating the “egg bowl,” the soft and cozy areas that make a house feel most like a home. Says the owner, “It took me a couple of tries to find someone who could help me achieve the right look. Laura really worked with us. She is so patient; she just keeps bringing things until they work.” Urban came into the project after construction was complete, so she wasn’t directly involved with the building team. As a result, the goals for her part would manifest as an evolution of the initial desire to let in more light and bring in the outdoors. Urban says, “We really wanted to give the house a coastal feel, but upscale coastal, and we continued with the theme of lightening the space up.” She and the owners introduced a number of natural textures, too, incorporating sisal rugs and grasscloth wallpaper.

Oiled random width cedar weatherboards are contemporary and rustic, the polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate tie in wonderfully to the adjacent limestone cliffs, and the clean folded wall to roof, envelopes the building from the sheltered south to the amazing views to the north. Designed to portray purity of form the outer metal surface provides enclosure and shelter from the elements, while its inner face is a continuous skin of hoop pine timber from inside to out. The hoop pine linings bend up the inner walls to form the ceiling and then soar continuous outward past the full height glazing to become the outside soffit. The bold vertical lines of the panel joins are strongly expressed aligning with windows and jambs, they guild the eye up and out so as you step in through the sheltered Southern entrances the landscape flows out in front of you. Every detail required careful thought in design and craft in construction. As two simple boxes joined by a glass link, a house that sits so beautifully in the landscape was deceptively challenging, and stands as a credit to our client passion for their new home & the builders craftsmanship to see it though, it is a end result we are all very proud to have been a part of.

This traditional farmhouse kitchen was designed by Jeff Eakley in collaboration with Carol Kurth of Carol Kurth Architecture + Interiors and Legacy Construction. The expansive kitchen features Bilotta Collection cabinets in a mix of custom white and blue -grey paint. The farm sink was fabricated in stainless steel and continues as a counter top along the perimeter under the bay windows and stainless was also used on the Wolf range wall. The large island cabinetry is painted in blue-grey and has Carrera Marble countertop with a stainless steel inset border detail. A second sink was added at the island for a family who likes to prep together. The ceiling has reclaimed wood beams to continue the farmhouse aesthetic with pendant lights. This project had a failed coating applied to it that was faulty from the manufacture. We ground off the existing coating and exposed a heavy full exposure aggregate surface. We then continued the polishing process up to a highly reflective sheen. This floor will provide a extremely durable, stain resistant and long lasting surface while looking stunning.

Located in North County San Luis Obispo, the Santa Ysabel Residence is a Mediterranean inspired family home. Taking advantage of the warm climate, a flagstone paved entry courtyard provides private gathering space that leads to the stone clad entry. Inside the home, exposed beams, wood baseboards, and travertine floors continue the Mediterranean vibe. A large wine room, with enough storage for a few hundred bottles, features a peek through window from the dining room. A large covered outdoor living and dining room open up to the pool and fire pit, embracing the rural views of Santa Ysabel.

Mevrou, erected in 1922, was a Landmark Structure which over time had seen many additions and renovations. The design process began by peeling away the layers and uncovering the original footprint. The small front staircase located to the north and right off the main entry became an interesting challenge to work through as its location, while original to the structure, was not ideal. The original 1922 structure dictated the scale of the addition, telling the story from the outside and guiding the interior flow. Beginning from the west living room wall, the new design created the dining, kitchen, and family room areas that more naturally lead into the rest of the home. The composition resulted in Mevrou being composed of two volumes: a strong, single form of concrete plastered walls remaining from the original more formal structure, contrasted by the exposed brick form of the new addition. The contrast of original and new structure continues to tell Mevrou’s long story on the interiors as well, displaying beautiful exposed brick and plank boards. The new fireplace mantel was designed based on the original doors Mevrou once sported in 1922 paying homage to the details lost during its lifetime of renovations.
