When this homeowner’s neighbor removed two, two- story-high Ficus trees, her side-yard became baron and sunbaked. Concrete covers virtually the whole area from the house to the property line, but because the side-yard has a lot of foot traffic and serves as a sitting area to the basement apartment, the owner did not want to remove any of the concrete. The solution was to put up fencing to block the view of the neighbor’s house, then upcycle wine barrels and 55-gallon drums into huge planters. The drums are large enough to accommodate a full-sized tree and provide the added advantage of giving height to smaller trees to provide further screening of the neighbor’s house. Everything was painted in bright colors to give the space a cheery Caribbean feel. The neighbor’s tree removal ended up as a blessing in disguise, because what had been a drab trough-way was transformed into a happy patio.

When Allison Ramsey Architects was invited over to take a look at this typical ranch style house to talk with the new owner about renovating we saw a typical ranch home. Good bones but not too special. Then we realized what type of views were possible. Views of Beaufort's "Point" shoreline, waterfront park, and the old turn bridge informed us quickly that we needed to open up the rear as much as possible. This customer converted a small bedroom into a huge custom walk-in master closet. They opted for antique white with amber glaze doors and oil rubbed bronze hardware. This island includes a glass display top to showcase the contents of the jewelry drawers. There is a display case with glass doors for handbags and shoes and plenty of hanging space for clothes. The customer also included a seating area to mimic the feel of a high end department store.

It's almost like a lookout tower for your front entry way!
