Fitting a family eating area into the space was another design dilemma. A built-in banquette provides a cozy spot for family meals.

This project began with the goal of updating both style and function to allow for improved ease of use for a wheelchair. The previous space was overstuffed with an island that didn't really fit, an over-sized fridge in a location that complicated a primary doorway, and a 42" tall high bar that was inaccessible from a wheelchair. Our clients desired a space that would improve wheelchair use for both cooking or just being in the room, yet did not look like an ADA space. It became a story of less is more, and subtle, thoughtful changes from a standard design.
After working through options, we designed an open floorplan that provided a galley kitchen function with a full 5 ft walkway by use of a peninsula open to the family den. This peninsula is highlighted by a drop down, table-height countertop wrapping the end and long backside that is now accessible to all members of the family by providing a perfect height for a flexible workstation in a wheelchair or comfortable entertaining on the backside. We then dropped the height for cooking at the new induction cooktop and created knee space below. Further, we specified an apron front sink that brings the sink closer in reach than a traditional undermount sink that would have countertop rimming in front. An articulating faucet with no limitations on reach provides full range of access in the sink. The ovens and microwave were also situated at a height comfortable for use from a wheelchair. Where a refrigerator used to block the doorway, a pull out is now located giving easy access to dry goods for cooks at all heights. Every element within the space was considered for the impact to our homes occupants - wheelchair or not, even the doorswing on the microwave.
Now our client has a kitchen that every member of the family can use and be a part of. Simple design, with a well-thought out plan, makes a difference in the lives of another family.

When renovating the kitchen cabinets, we opted to replace the profiles and swap out many of the cabinet doors for more useful drawers.

The owners of this traditional home sought to update and expand their somewhat dated and crowded kitchen. The former kitchen had a corner sink and a modified U-shape, but with the only entry intersecting the refrigerator and bar passage, it did not allow for multiple cooks in the kitchen. The existing kitchen was separated from the family room by a wall which included a see-through fireplace, but in reality the two areas were distinctly separate. As this family enjoys cooking and entertaining, they sought to open the space to accommodate a large island in the kitchen and opening the space to the adjoining family room. Additionally, they wanted the cooking surfaces and appliances to be state of the art, but with a style reminiscent of Tuscany.
To achieve the effect, color groups and materials were selected to create the Tuscan region’s theme. Round shapes were included throughout the space including the island top and the custom archway opening to the family room. The owners selected cherry cabinetry with a dark brown stain, granite counters with some hues of blue-green, and a natural stone tumbled subway tile backsplash. The island color is fossil beige, and the owners re-purposed their existing bar stools using the same color. With the serious emphasis on cooking, the range selected is a 36” gas Thermador® with custom exhaust hood. A separate Thermador® baking oven and microwave are built-in on the adjoining wall. Bela Cera® hand-scraped hardwood flooring ties together the kitchen, eating area, and family room.
The existing stone fireplace was taken down and set aside for re-installation at project completion. As the wall separating the kitchen and family room was eliminated, the stone fireplace has been reinstalled at its new location on the home’s east-wall. Windows and built-in cabinetry flank the fireplace, with the flat screen mounted above it. With added windows, additional can lighting, and antique white trim, the rooms are bright and airy.

The stars here are the La Canche range and custom hood, both in black and both exquisite appliances. The subtle gray of the perimeter cabinets bring balance to the palette.

Trendy eat-in kitchen photo in Charleston with an undermount sink and metallic backsplash

I designed a beautiful, functional kitchen perfect for this couple’s active lifestyle who love to cook & entertain. By completely reconfiguring the space, relocating appliances and adding an island, this kitchen now has more work surface and lots of storage for cooking utensils, spices, specialty oils & even an area to display some of their wine collection. With leathered stone countertops, energy efficient induction cooktop, a custom wine cabinet and all LED lighting, this contemporary kitchen now lends itself to multiple cooks and, most importantly, my clients love their new kitchen!
As serious wine collectors, they felt it would be nice to have an area to display and store a few select bottles of wine, although most of the collection is stored elsewhere. While it is usually just the two of them, they enjoy entertaining and have children and family come to visit quite a bit, so space to move about was important. Their style leans toward contemporary, nothing fussy & with very clean lines—they prefer a linear, symmetrical look so the stylized Shaker cabinets were ideal. They prefer natural surfaces, therefore the leathered granite countertops & glass backsplash were a perfect fit. This kitchen gets great sunlight during the day but was in dire need of light at night. New LED cans for general lighting, pendant lighting over the island as well as under cabinet lighting is all dimmable so they can adjust the brightness.

Mid-sized elegant u-shaped ceramic tile open concept kitchen photo in Houston with a farmhouse sink, raised-panel cabinets, dark wood cabinets, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, an island, beige backsplash and stone tile backsplash

This four-story Victorian revival was amazing to see unfold; from replacing the foundation, building out the 1st floor, hoisting structural steel into place, and upgrading to in-floor radiant heat. This gorgeous “Old Lady” got all the bells and whistles.
This quintessential Victorian presented itself with all the complications imaginable when bringing an early 1900’s home back to life. Our favorite task? The Custom woodwork: hand carving and installing over 200 florets to match historical home details. Anyone would be hard-pressed to see the transitions from existing to new, but we invite you to come and try for yourselves!

In the latest trends in kitchen remodel we have noticed the use of a warmer grey color for the kitchen cabinets. The finish on the cabinets is divided between sleek look or weathered look with aging details and the mix of both in the kitchen is fantastic. More glass doors with incorporated indirect lighting is the perfect way to show your favorite dishes but also helps create the coziness in your space. The focal points in the Spring/ Summer 2018 will be the hoods over the cook tops and the kitchen islands. The hoods will become bigger and more masculine but will have more decorative details to them so that they can draw attention and be the "hero".
The islands are going to grow bigger so that they can perform the duty and perhaps replace the kitchenette table and to do so the new islands will be very specific in shape and functionality to each owner/ cook. To accomplish the new visions for the kitchen islands, we at Karin Ross Designs like to extend the size by adding different shapes of decorative feet and or shelving instead of having another roll of cabinetry under a bigger slab of counter top. By adding feet and or shelving for your cook books and such we convert the island in a big prep area but also in the much desired space to gather around the cook preparing the family meal. After all one of the best family secrets in accordance to some soap operas, are revealed around the table in the kitchen as the meal is been prepared....

The homeowners wanted to take advantage of induction cooking, but were hesitant because of their unfamiliarity. I suggested reducing their cooktop from 36” to 30” and adding a 15” gas cooktop. The jury’s still out as to whether they'll use the gas, as they've fallen in love with induction.
