For our client, who had previous experience working with architects, we enlarged, completely gutted and remodeled this Twin Peaks diamond in the rough. The top floor had a rear-sloping ceiling that cut off the amazing view, so our first task was to raise the roof so the great room had a uniformly high ceiling. Clerestory windows bring in light from all directions. In addition, we removed walls, combined rooms, and installed floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall sliding doors in sleek black aluminum at each floor to create generous rooms with expansive views. At the basement, we created a full-floor art studio flooded with light and with an en-suite bathroom for the artist-owner. New exterior decks, stairs and glass railings create outdoor living opportunities at three of the four levels. We designed modern open-riser stairs with glass railings to replace the existing cramped interior stairs. The kitchen features a 16 foot long island which also functions as a dining table. We designed a custom wall-to-wall bookcase in the family room as well as three sleek tiled fireplaces with integrated bookcases. The bathrooms are entirely new and feature floating vanities and a modern freestanding tub in the master. Clean detailing and luxurious, contemporary finishes complete the look.

A relatively new existing home on a steep downsloping lot where you park and enter at the upper floor needed to have a dramatic stairway entry. By refining and reducing structure and scale, introducing new glass railing and a combination of wood and white cabinetry, the space now expresses a clean, crisp aesthetic reflecting how the owners want to live. Working with German cabinets by Leicht the kitchen area was sculpted to create more usable cabinet pantry and counter area in a combination of white oak and gloss white lacquer paint. Final touches include a new porcelain tiled fireplace surround and hearth with gas insert and powder room with figured wall and floating walnut vanity. Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Minneapolis

Our clients, a busy husband and wife, live in a top floor condo in an historic brick townhouse. With hectic professional lives, they had not had much time for home improvement but finally felt ready to make some changes. At the top of their to-do list were the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen, a small, enclosed utility space, featured dated tile flooring and backsplash and a floor plan that made the small space feel even more cramped. Meanwhile, the bathroom was also in need of a refresh, and the homeowners hoped to replace their tub with a safer walk-in shower with bench seating. We began by introducing subtle changes to stitch together the home’s living areas. We opened the wall between the kitchen and dining room, which had been mostly enclosed. The small kitchen had featured a traditional work triangle with refrigerator, stove, and sink/prep/cleaning area along three separate walls. Unfortunately the room was too cramped for this particular layout. Instead, we placed the stove on the same wall as the fridge, which allowed a larger opening to the dining room. We kept the overhanging cabinetry in the kitchen but chose a new unit with separate cabinets facing both the kitchen and dining room for extra storage opportunities. With extra countertop at the sink, the half-wall, and on either side of the stove, the homeowners now have plenty of cooking prep space. The homeowners favor a crisp white palette, and the pearl Omega cabinets that they selected are a perfect fit. A mix of brushed nickel and glass knob pulls offer visual and textile variety. For the countertops, we installed elegant white Quartz Calacatta Novus with a graceful dark wave pattern. The backsplash is Feather Gray Manhattan Field Tile. Refinished and repainted moulding creates a seamless flow among the living spaces. In the dining and living rooms, the color-averse homeowners decided to try Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray. We also removed tile flooring from the kitchen in favor of restoring the original oak hardwoods, uniting this room with the rest of the condo. In the bathroom, we removed the tub in favor of a curb-less walk-in shower with built-in marble bench seating. We fitted Vintage Studio’s Starry White wall tile and Bianco Carrera honed floor tile, and installed a new vanity (with a Cambria Queen Anne marble top) and Robern medicine cabinet. We were delighted to work on the project with Elizabeth Tanny – a New York-based interior designer who is also the sister and sister-in-law of the homeowners. This is the story about a kitchen that was showing it’s age with white countertops and dark oak cabinets on a dark oak floor. It all worked once, but now the kitchen felt dark, cramped and dysfunctional. The owners were looking for a total kitchen transformation. After a disastrous beginning with a contractor taking their money and vanishing into thin air, the owners were left with a completely gutted kitchen that consisted of only the walls. They hired Rick Jacobson to rescue them and restart the project. The new kitchen design began with the idea of using Cobalt Blue as a primary color. The blue seen on many glassware pieces is Cobalt Blue, and it was decided to use it in the tile for the kitchen, as well as the pendant lights. Another goal was to make the kitchen brighter with an easier traffic flow, as well as completely updated cabinetry. And there were traffic patterns to improve, a refrigerator to move, and exhaust vents to reroute. Rick Jacobson listened to the owners and worked to create the kitchen that the owners imagined. He began by thinking through the traffic flow patterns. He noted that the doorway from the dining room needed to be widened. He added rounded doorway headers to match the home’s existing décor. He carefully thought through where the kitchen island should be, including how opening the oven doors would be in relation to people sitting at the kitchen island at a family gathering. Kitchen cabinet touches include off edge flat panel doors, soft close wooden drawers, and a spice cabinet with two slide-out racks. The new longer center island features a drawer microwave that opens and closes automatically with the push of a button. The center island also features two recycling bins and seating for four. Rick even thought of adding decorative elements to the existing half wall to make it look in line with the kitchen island. The kitchen’s black granite countertops offer an unusually appealing view: There are lots of interesting reflections throughout the kitchen. Another of Rick’s touches is that all of the lights, including recessed ceiling lights, three cobalt blue pendant lights and below cabinet lights are on dimmers which work to balance daytime and nighttime lighting. The under mounted stainless steel single sink is complemented with a gooseneck faucet. The stainless steel gas range is thin enough to allow for a wide drawer below for utensils, and the stainless steel vent hood is vented through the ceiling to outdoors, allowing additional storage space in the top cabinets. Double ovens with white doors are the perfect match to the cabinets, with a location that makes baking and roasting easier with the two large vertical storage for baking sheets and supplies nearby. The result: A functional, open, bright and Cobalt blue kitchen.
