In 2014, we were approached by a couple to achieve a dream space within their existing home. They wanted to expand their existing bar, wine, and cigar storage into a new one-of-a-kind room. Proud of their Italian heritage, they also wanted to bring an “old-world” feel into this project to be reminded of the unique character they experienced in Italian cellars. The dramatic tone of the space revolves around the signature piece of the project; a custom milled stone spiral stair that provides access from the first floor to the entry of the room. This stair tower features stone walls, custom iron handrails and spindles, and dry-laid milled stone treads and riser blocks. Once down the staircase, the entry to the cellar is through a French door assembly. The interior of the room is clad with stone veneer on the walls and a brick barrel vault ceiling. The natural stone and brick color bring in the cellar feel the client was looking for, while the rustic alder beams, flooring, and cabinetry help provide warmth. The entry door sequence is repeated along both walls in the room to provide rhythm in each ceiling barrel vault. These French doors also act as wine and cigar storage. To allow for ample cigar storage, a fully custom walk-in humidor was designed opposite the entry doors. The room is controlled by a fully concealed, state-of-the-art HVAC smoke eater system that allows for cigar enjoyment without any odor.

This client in Burke VA wanted to replace their existing builder supplied step stones. We designed and installed an irregular mortared bluestone walkway with graceful curves leading up to their front porch.

Like most growing families, this client wanted to lure everyone outside. And when the family went outdoors, they were hoping to find flamboyant color, delicious fragrance, freshly grilled food, fun play-spaces, and comfy entertaining areas waiting. Privacy was an imperative. Seems basic enough. But a heap of challenges stood in the way between what they were given upon arrival and the family's ultimate dreamscape. Primary among the impediments was the fact that the house stands on a busy corner lot. Plus, the breakneck slope was definitely not playground-friendly. Fortunately, Westover Landscape Design rode to the rescue and literally leveled the playing field. Furthermore, flowing from space to space is a thoroughly enjoyable, ever-changing journey given the blossom-filled, year-around-splendiferous gardens that now hug the walkway and stretch out to the property lines. Soft evergreen hedges and billowing flowering shrubs muffle street noise, giving the garden within a sense of embrace. A fully functional (and frequently used) convenient outdoor kitchen/dining area/living room expand the house's floorplan into a relaxing, nature-infused on-site vacationland. Mission accomplished. With the addition of the stunning old-world stone fireplace and pergola, this amazing property is a welcome retreat for year round enjoyment. Mission accomplished. It was a mutual love of Italy, specifically the Tuscan countryside, that inspired renowned architect Mark Scheurer and his wife, Jane, to build their dream home in a simplistic, but elegant style reminiscent of a centuries old Italian farmhouse. Scheurer’s aim was to bring light, air, and an indoor/outdoor feeling into the home while preserving privacy throughout this rustic Southern California home, all of which was achieved a lot in part due to the implementation of Eldorado Stone. The use of stone was a predominant element throughout the design. Scheurer used 2,800 square feet of a custom blend of Eldorado’s Veneto Fieldledge and Hillstone profiles, both of which were applied with an overgrout technique, creating a sense of ageless authenticity and textural beauty. Another 500 square feet was used in the interior to create a dramatic focal point of exposed stone in the living room and boast large, arching windows that open up the living room and filter in light. Upstairs, the master bedroom continues the home’s rustic Italian design with exposed stone walls that reach to the beamed ceiling above. Although Scheurer is in a neighborhood that request for real products to be used in home construction, he had no problem obtaining approval to use Eldorado Stone, which speaks volumes about Eldorado’s beauty and believability. No one doubted the authenticity of the product. In fact, Scheurer believes that Eldorado is even better than natural stone in that the color palette is easily controlled as well as consistent.
