Simply Elegant Kitchen in Arlington Heights

Like most homes built in the 1980’s this combined entry, living room, eating area, and kitchen were completely compartmentalized with walls. They loved the idea of opening up the spaces to accommodate more of a great room feeling. Advance Design accomplished this by opening up the corner of the kitchen to not only make the space flow, but to let light into the dark eating nook and living room. Working on a budget, opening up the space and installing new hardwood flooring was a priority, so a more expansive kitchen had to be economical. Wanting a clean, contemporary feel; tall espresso shaker cabinets replaced old soffits, and River White granite made an impressive and clean lined contrast. A drywall pantry was replaced with an efficient roll out pantry, and stylish long stainless steel pulls tie the whole look together. Photo Credits- Joe Nowak

Fieldstone Cabinetry

The kitchen was created by Chester County Kitchen & Bath, a Fieldstone Cabinetry dealer in West Chester, PA. The kitchen was created with Fieldstone Cabinetry's LaGrange inset door style in Maple finished in a cabinet color called Ivory Cream. The island is also the LaGrange inset door style, this time in Cherry finished in a cabinet color called Chestnut with Ebony glaze. The butler's pantry was created with Fieldstone Cabinetry's LaSalle inset door style in Cherry finished in a cabinet color called Chestnut with Ebony glaze. The drawers in this project have optional five piece drawer headers.

Ulrich designer: Bonnie Hufnagel, CKD Photography by Peter Rymwid To make this small kitchen work-flow really work and to add storage. The original kitchen had the refrigerator sticking out into the kitchen passage area. We installed a built-in Sub-Zero model that only projected to counter depth, and to install a custom wood panel on it matching the cabinetry. This made the refrigerator look like the cabinets and reduced its visual presence. We also moved the range to the center of the side wall space which provided 4 feet of prep area on either side of the range. The soffits were removed from overhead and the cabinets were brought to the ceiling around the kitchen perimeter to gain more storage space.

Kitchen cabinets are made of natural maple in a flat front door style. The small kitchen was maximized for efficiency with a mixer lift, appliance garage, trash compactor, and cabinets to the ceiling. This kitchen was dark , dated and dysfunctional before we ripped it apart. We added an island complete with bookcase, roll-out trash can and small sitting area. The refrigerator was relocated across the room giving tons more countertop space. perhaps the biggest improvement was widening the doorway to the living room by several feet which really opened up the spaces.
