After a decade of being bi-coastal, my clients decided to retire from the east coast to the west. But the task of packing up a whole lifetime in a home was quite daunting so they hired me to comb through their furniture and accessories to see what could fit, what should be left behind, and what should make the move. The job proved difficult since my clients have a wealth of absolutely gorgeous objects and furnishings collected from trips to exotic, far-flung locales like Nepal, or inherited from relatives in England. It was tough to pare down, but after hours of diligent measuring, I mapped out what would migrate west and where it would be placed once here, and I filled in some blank spaces with new pieces. They bought their recent Craftsman-style home from the contractor who had designed and built it for his family. The only architectural work we did was to transform the den at the rear of the house into a television/garden room. My clients did not want the television to be on display, and sticking a TV in an armoire just doesn’t cut it anymore. I recommended installing a hidden, mirror TV with accompanying invisible in-wall speakers. To do this, we removed an unnecessary small door in the corner of the room to free up the entire wall. Now, at the touch of a remote, what looks like a beautiful wall mirror mounted over a Japanese tansu console comes to life, and sound magically floats out from the wall around it! We also replaced a bank of windows with French doors to allow easy access to the garden. While the house is extremely well made, the interiors were bland. The warm woodwork was lost in a sea of beige, so I chose a deep aqua color palette for the front rooms of the house which makes the woodwork sing. And we discovered a wonderful art niche over the fireplace that the previous owners had covered with a framed print. Standing resolute in the diligent Atlantic breezes, the Regency Tower condominiums have been a mainstay in the material culture of this New Jersey oceanside community. Our approach to the redesign of the building pediment compliments the resilience of its original construction and augments its present aesthetic. This “Boardwalk Canopy” concept is envisioned as an elegant revitalization of the Porte Cochere (canopy) and corresponding ground-scapes. We understand that the existing canopy is both an element of shelter and salient in accentuating the character of the existing edifice. Since the existing function of the Regency’s Porte Cochere is to provide covered entrance for inhabitants and visitors, our design proposal reinterprets this element as a figuratively organic ext4ntion of the boardwalk. Striking a sensitive relationship with the social theatre of place, the 5200 Boardwalk Canopy design generates a new linear and vertical continuity in gesture and form, while redefining a visual hierarchy for the pediment. The simple palette facilitates wayfinding and specifies a timeless and durable visual statement that engages with the Regency’s latent character. We believe this design presents a unique and identifiable reimagining of a building that has well withstood the test of time. Comprehensive architecture working drawings can be provided upon award of the commission.

This project was such an amazing transformation and was exquisitely executed by our Bennett Team. Our Project Manager, Tony Cicchino, and Designer, Sarah McDonald, collaborated on these two spaces to bring a whole new look for the homeowners. In the kitchen, the homeowners fell in love with the concept of a two-tone design. Sarah wowed them with her remarkable rendering featuring crisp white and rich navy tones. The contract created an eye-catching aesthetic that truly sets the kitchen apart. The standout features are the gorgeous backsplash and mosaic space above the stove. Our dynamic father and son team worked diligently to customize the mullion detail on the cabinets allowing their craftsmanship to shine and elevate the kitchen’s appearance. The renovations didn’t stop there! Our clients also wanted to give their main bathroom a small facelift. Our crew stepped in and replaced the cabinet and top, mirror and light fixture. They achieved a cohesive look by carefully matching the newest selections to the existing flooring and fixtures.
