These clients decided to make this home their Catalina Mountain homestead, after living abroad for many years. The prior yard enclosed only a small portion of their available property, and a wall obstructed their city lights view of northern Tucson. We expanded the yard outward to take advantage of the space and to also integrate the topography change into a 360 vanishing edge pool.
The home previously had log columns in keeping with a territorial motif. To bring it up to date, concrete cylindrical columns were put in their place, which allowed us to expand the shaded locations throughout the yard in an updated way, as seen by the new retractable canvas shade structures.
Constructed by Mike Rowland, you can see how well he pulled off the projects precise detailing of Bianchi's Design. Note the cantilevered concrete steps, the slot of fire in the midst of the spa, the stair treads that don't quite touch the adjacent walls, and the columns that float just above the pool water.

The kitchen was the original kitchen when this house was built, it felt closed in and dark. There was old vinyl flooring with half wall, and a closed in peninsula. We opened up the kitchen to the living room creating an open living. With a quartz waterfall on the island and back splash going up the wall add more detail into the space. The gray complements the natural wood with the floating shelves and the original windows and trim.

This mid century modern haven features beautiful floor to ceiling windows and a gorgeous backyard view of a park. However the kitchen needed a serious face lift and a small Ensuite was in need of a functional review. New cabinetry, floor to ceiling geometric tile and the addition of an Ensuite shower, this space is now mathematician approved!

Contemporary design needn’t be cold and stark; this kitchen is a study in blending colors, patterns, and finishes to dazzle at every turn. Flaunting the convention of pairing gloss white with matte wood, this does just the opposite: mixing matte white paint with high-gloss walnut-look laminate. But why stop there when you can introduce a softly pearlized chocolate textured laminate for even more interest? The upper section of the coffee area combines dark textured uppers with a gloss horizontal laminate backsplash. It pops against surrounding white bases, paneled refrigeration columns, and oven cabinet. While the waterfall island also features the textured laminate, the entire range/sink wall is white to accentuate the dark materials. A tall pantry is gloss wood laminate (here oriented vertically) that continues in a flyover to the oven cabinet.
Variety is even found in the hardware: wall cabinets have touch latches; white bases have brushed nickel edge pulls; and the textured laminate bases have bronze integrated channel pulls. The butler’s pantry includes a paneled wine refrigerator and corner sink. Its glass doors boast bronze metal frames with interiors of horizontal gloss laminate. Unifying the elements is honed “Calacatta Lincoln” marble for all the countertops and slab backsplashes.

The expansive new kitchen is a dramatic change from the original galley room. The clients wanted a modern design, an island for food prep and more storage.
Two types of slab front cabinet doors add interest to the room. One is a dark Wenge wood. As a contrast, the other is a sleek glossy white finish. Subtle long thin Ikea pulls complete the look.
The 42-inch high island is actually bar height, but suits the tall homeowners. The island has cabinet storage, open shelves, a large expanse of quartz countertop, and room for two stools.
To maintain a clean, modern look, we hid the kitchen outlets below the countertop edge (as seen in the island above) or under the wall cabinets.
The clients selected Bosch stainless steel appliances, including a cooktop and a wall oven. Recessed down lights on dimmers provide light throughout the kitchen addition.
The windows are fiberglass in a modern style with a light blue finish on the exterior and interior. The addition also has two skylights.
