Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

Our clients wanted their renovation to blend classic design features with modern elements to reflect their elegant, yet comfortable style. The space that needed the most attention was the kitchen which felt dark, cold, and unwelcoming with its traditional espresso-colored cabinets and stainless steel countertops. A two-level peninsula interrupted flow and connectivity with the adjacent spaces. To have the biggest impact and accommodate the kitchen’s expansion and redesign, we relocated a hallway to an exterior wall allowing natural light to flood in. With Craftsman details throughout the rest of the home, our Our clients wanted a double-sided island (with seating) in their redesigned kitchen, something their old one lacked. To maintain good circulation, we designed a shallow ‘hutch’ and recessed the paneled refrigerator/freezer, so they are perfectly aligned. The creamy tone of the painted cabinets complements the champagne-stained maple, adding softness and warmth to the space. We incorporated traditional details such as a beadboard backsplash, library sconces, and a Venetian plaster hood, but balanced these with more modern features such as a continuous quartz backsplash, updated hardware, fixtures and lighting. Blending old and new creates a space with a sense of history and character – it feels fresh, modern, and comfortable. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with a suite of professional appliances including a 48” double gas range and separate 24” refrigerator and freezer columns, paneled to integrate seamlessly. Two sinks allow for separate prep and cleaning zones. Open shelves and glass-front cabinets are the perfect way to showcase treasured items and favorite dishware, while hidden accessories keep the cook and kitchen well-organized. Replacing the old peninsula with an island created better flow and connectivity with the adjacent rooms. The kitchen is now brighter, cozier, and more inviting. An informal dining area connects the new kitchen to the living room and a nearby butler’s pantry got a top-to-bottom makeover. We paired moody blue-green cabinets with a stunning Nero Marquina marble countertop and black sink. Brushed brass was used throughout, from the bar faucet to the hardware and mosaic tile accent. A distinctive drink rail gives a nod to the past while the saturated color on the walls, ceiling and trim feels simultaneously contemporary and timeless.

The 5,600 square foot Willow Creek ranch home blends industrial and organic design elements for a modern but classic design scheme. For an aesthetic that is simultaneously traditional and contemporary, By Design Interiors utilized Banker Wire’s fine woven wire mesh pattern S-12 in two separate areas of the home—the French Country inspired kitchen, and the game room bar—to provide unexpected touch points while creating a cohesive design experience. The modern French Country inspired kitchen was designed from the ground up. As a central point in the open concept home, the theme of organic-meets-industrial originates here. Specified in an antique brass finish, Banker Wire’s S-12—a fine woven wire mesh pattern—was fabricated into the front of the kitchen cabinets. The robust woven wire mesh provides a warm aesthetic touch to the surrounding neutral color palette while also giving a near opaque cover to the storage space. The highly faceted surface of S-12 both absorbs and reflects the colors of its surroundings, adding texture and depth to the striking design. “Banker Wire’s S-12 provides the integral industrial element in the kitchen area, helping to create the high/low aesthetic of the space—accentuating the organic materials, such as the leathered quartzite countertop island and single-sided waterfall edge, and the custom zinc vent range hood,” says Ayca Stiffel, Senior Interior Designer, Design Interiors. “The nearby dining room chandelier, grey-white walls, and natural light add a softness to the space, when contrasted with the industrial look and feel of the mesh.” Departing from the traditional French touchpoints found in the kitchen, By Design Interiors leaned more heavily on industrial accents to realize the custom game room bar. The homeowner’s requested a fun “industrial” space different from any home bar they had seen before. Using Banker Wire’s fine woven wire mesh pattern S-12, multiple sliding screen doors were crafted to create customizable storage space for the bar. The antique brass finish of the mesh reflects the warm light, adding a lighter tone that contrasts the chocolate browns and matte black finishes of the surrounding space. Leather chairs and metal work on the foot bars, bar front and frame compliment the woven wire mesh, creating a cohesive environment that is both unique and welcoming. Edgy, sophisticated, and familiar, the Willow Creek Texas Ranch Home exemplifies the role that unique materiality—such as Banker Wire’s architectural woven wire mesh—can play in a contemporary residential design scheme.

The homeowner’s existing master bath had a single sink where the current vanity/make-up area is and a closet where the current sinks are. It wasn’t much of a master bath. Design Objectives: -Two sinks and more counter space -Separate vanity/make-up area with seating and task lighting -A pop of color to add character and offset black and white elements -Fun floor tile that makes a statement -Define the space as a true master bath Design challenges included: -Finding a location for two sinks -Finding a location for a vanity/make-up area -Opening up and brightening a small, narrow space THE RENEWED SPACE Removing a closet and reorganizing the sink and counter layout in such small space dramatically changed the feel of this bathroom. We also removed a small wall that was at the end of the old closet. With the toilet/shower area opened up, more natural light enters and bounces around the room. The white quartz counters, a lighted mirror and updated lighting above the new sinks contribute greatly to the new open feel. A new door in a slightly shifted doorway is another new feature that brings privacy and a true master bath feel to the suite. Bold black and white elements and a pop color add the kind of statement feel that can be found throughout the rest of the house.

Originally from Hawaii, my clients wanted to incorporate the warmth and color of the islands into their California ranch home. Their requests: • Comfortable, serene, uncluttered design • Natural elements • Kitchen more open to dining • Arrangement to accommodate new flat-screen TV viewing Hosting constant visitors, my clients live in their kitchen and enjoy cooking. For Hawaiian colors, I used green quartz, glass tile and counters, iroko flooring, hemlock cabinets, and an unusual slate limestone. To create a lighter, more welcoming space I removed the wall between the dining room and kitchen and increased the entry wall length to create a better kitchen/dining/entry relationship. I added a wall between the family room and kitchen to house tall kitchen elements on one side and TV equipment on the other, as well as create a natural transition for the ceiling height changes. I rearranged the space for convenience and function and created an open shower with double rain and hand-showers, a shallow makeup counter (easy to get close to the mirror), plentiful storage, and seating. Shades of blue and green create a sense of “spa”. Blended textures of honed limestone countertops, slate, glass tile, large-format and mosaic porcelain tile, glass pebbles, granite tile, and ceramic tiles are earthy yet refined. Horizontal patterns create serenity. Our challenge was to take a builder grade kitchen and infuse it with elements that combined Traditional cabinetry with Rustic overtones. Because our clients enjoy entertaining, the first step was to enlarge the kitchen. We took down the wall that separated the living room from the kitchen. This simple change enabled us to build an oversize island which serves as both a gathering place for guests and a work space for our client and her daughter, who is an aspiring chef. The island is made from reclaimed heart of pine taken out of a factory in Chicago. The semi-gloss, black lacquer cabinets were distressed to add to the rustic ambience the homeowner desired. We wrapped the micro-lam beam used to support the upper level of the house with the same reclaimed wood used for the island. Using a shot gun, we distressed the beam and hand worked the dovetail joints and walnut pegs creating a barn like post and beam look. The pantry has a charming hand made heart of pine screen door. Chicken wire was used for the screen, adding yet another rustic element to this thoroughly custom kitchen. There are even Urban Industrial overtones with the metal pulls on the cabinetry and the metal accented barstools. Cory Locatelli

The Pool Boss transformed this Caldwell, NJ property into an outdoor living space full of amenities. The home and surrounding grounds represent a true blend of rustic and elegant, so it is only fitting that the homeowner chose “The Harmony” pool. Perfectly suited to the home itself, it also expresses a beautiful synergy of classic and modern pool elements. External steps descend into this stunning free-form pool which was also fitted with deck jets and a swim-out in the deep end! Perhaps the most exciting water feature is the adjacent fieldstone hot tub which contains a “spillover” waterfall into the pool. A vibrant fire bowl sits on either side. The surrounding paving stone patio provides style + generous space for poolside lounging. On the opposite end, a handsome fieldstone fire pit provides a cozy gathering space for the colder months. A thin border of shrubs & river stones creates dimension and separates the water space from the green space. Overlooking this oasis is a handsome deck spanning the width of the house. Look up and you’ll admire a rich wood-planked ceiling. Look down and you’ll see a patterned paving stone floor set in a complementary Ashlar pattern. The Pool Boss truly created a space that incorporated the design elements of this lovely house, making it a natural extension of the property as well as an enviable place for entertaining!

This project has become our most famous installation—a stunning 33-foot curved stair-slide combination built entirely from solid black walnut, featuring 445 layers of cross-laminated hardwood and a spiral newel post that took eight months to construct in our shop. The homeowners had searched for eight years to find someone “crazy enough” to build their dream. When we completed it, one of Clyde’s trusted business partners—someone who’d seen him tackle countless unique projects—admitted he thought Clyde had lost his mind taking this one on. That walnut slide stretches 45 feet long and 3 feet wide—spacious enough for three children to sit side-by-side or for an adult and child to slide together comfortably. We built it in one piece, filling an entire semi-trailer for transport. It lives in the hospital lobby, and no appointment is needed to experience it yourself. In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement. What a ride, indeed. Then there’s the curved stair-slide combination in Visalia, California—32 feet of knotty alder complemented by a hanging netted loft and climbing wall. Creative? Absolutely. Fun? The 26’x48’ floor plan is divided into thirds from front to back and from left to right. In plan, the left third is reserved for circulation spaces and is reflected in elevation by a monolithic block wall in three shades of gray. Punching through this block wall, in three distinct parts, are the main levels windows for the stair tower, bathroom, and patio. The right two thirds of the main level are reserved for the living room, kitchen, and dining room. At 16’ long, front to back, these three rooms align perfectly with the three-part block wall façade. It’s this interplay between plan and elevation that creates cohesion between each façade, no matter where it’s viewed. Given that this project would have neighbors on either side, great care was taken in crafting desirable vistas for the living, dinning, and master bedroom. Upstairs, with a view to the street, the master bedroom has a pair of closets and a skillfully planned bathroom complete with soaker tub and separate tiled shower. Main level cabinetry and built-ins serve as dividing elements between rooms and framing elements for views outside.

Party Palace - Custom Ranch on Acreage in Ridgefield Washington by Cascade West Development Inc. The peaceful parental oasis that was well deserved for this hardworking household consists of many luxurious details, some obvious and some not so much. First a little extra insulation in the walls, in the efforts of sound-dampening, silence goes a long way in the search for serenity. A personal fireplace with remote control makes sleeping in on chilly winter weekends a dream come true. Last, but certainly not least is the Master Bath. A stone surround enclave with an elevated soaker tub, bay window and hidden flat-screen tv are the centerpiece here. The enclave is flanked by double vanities, each with separate countertops and storage (marble and custom milled respectively) so daily routines are a breeze. The other highlights here include a full tile surround walk-in shower with separate wall-mounted shower heads and a central rainfall faucet. Lastly an 8 person sauna can be found just off the master bath, with a jacuzzi just outside. These elements together make a day relaxing at home almost indiscernible from a day at the spa. "Please help us! No one knows how to make our kitchen functional with all these angles!" Well the designers at Sycamore Kitchens & More took this as a personal challenge and the clients couldn't be happier with their new kitchen. Plenty of storage was created with the new design featuring 48" tall wall cabinets allowing for an extra shelf throughout the kitchen, angled cabinets in the corners instead of fillers, and a separate wine/ coffee bar area alleviating countertop clutter. Functional elements in the base cabinets such as roll out trays, spice racks, tray cabinets and deep pot and pan drawers replaced plain shelves. Lastly, the countertop was relocated from the island creating a more comfortable island for everyday use and entertaining. Architectural elements were incorporated to soften the sharp angles of the space including a majestic sweeping chimney hood, arched toe kicks, and custom stacked crown molding to the ceiling.
