Two cabinet colors, too beautiful! This kitchen remodel in Long Beach, New York state, is both traditional and unexpected. Lori Kurn, a designer for Coastal Cabinet Works, skillfully employed green walls, cream accents, and dark cherry cabinets to create this beautiful kitchen. Lori specified Fieldstone Cabinetry's Bainbridge door style in Cherry finished in a color called Chestnut with Ebony glaze for the perimeter cabinets. This was an excellent choice to anchor the numerous subtle color transitions in this kitchen. The island is also the Bainbridge door style, this time in Maple finished in a color called Buttercream with Chocolate glaze. Stunning work Lori! Madrona Passive House, a new Seattle home designed by SHED Architecture & Design and built by Hammer & Hand, combines contemporary design with high performance building to create an environmentally responsive and resource-efficient house. The home’s airtight, super-insulated building envelope and passive design minimize energy consumption while providing superior thermal comfort to occupants. A heat recovery ventilator supplies constant fresh air to the home’s interior while recovering 90% of thermal energy from exhaust air for reuse inside. A rooftop solar photovoltaic array will provide enough energy to offset most, perhaps all, of the home’s energy consumption on a net annual basis. To manage stormwater the project employs permeable pavers for site hardscape and two cisterns to capture and control rainwater from the home’s roof and the green roof on the garage. By investing in sustainable site development strategies, efficient building systems and an advanced envelope, the project aims to respect the home’s environmentally critical site and achieve one of the world’s most demanding building energy standards: Passive House. Sometimes, all a space needs is a face-lift to effect a transformation; such was the case for this project. This complete bathroom renovation was all about adding color and panache to the existing space. The layout remained much the same, but the finishing touches made all the difference. Completed in 2011 this 4 BR, 3 1/2 bath custom home is situated on a very tight urban infill lot in Northern, Virginia. Our clients were relocating to the D.C. area from New England and wanted to retain some of the New England vernacular they were familiar with in their new home. Due to heavy zoning restrictions, stylistic CCR's and a large program of almost 7000 sf, our design response is a modern take on a traditional hipped 4-square. We intentionally kept the skin and form of the building simple in order to contain cost and allow for a higher level of interior finish. The main level employs our favorite Great Room scheme that merges cooking, eating and entertaining into one seamless space that flows onto an expansive deck overlooking the rear yard. The entry elevation welcomes guests with a traditional front porch and stone path that passes by a small rain garden. The basement accommodates a guest room, media room, exercise area, and full shop while the upper level orients 2 kid's bedrooms, a Jack-n-Jill bath and the master suite toward a territorial view of the rear yard. All of this program is housed beneath a hipped roof that minimizes the scale of the house while presenting a thoughtful appearance toward the street and neighbors.

Louisa, San Clemente Coastal Modern Architecture The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home. A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard. The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment. Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. Our clients, a young professional couple in their 30s, sent us inspiration images of very traditional living rooms chock full of blues & whites, golds and merlots, brown furniture, formal window treatments, and Oriental rugs. They wanted a RETREAT and entertaining space for grown-ups, but durable enough a room for kids learning how to behave in a civilized manner. Our aim was “youthfulize” their ideas into something fresh-but-timeless for a young and growing family by employing luminous colors, abstract art, and transitional decor.

Our clients had purchased a lot on Lake Charlevoix and they hired us to help them design their family vacation home and that is what we did. You are welcomed into the home by a traditional double column gabled entry porch. This classic cottage design features an open floor plan with cathedral ceilings in the living room and plenty of natural light to capture views. The fireplace with built-ins serves as a beautiful focal point. The home has a master suite on the main level as well as another guest suite. The kitchen is warm and welcoming with a central island and plenty of counter space. A 3/4 bath is located off the mudroom / laundry area which also features a beach entry to minimize sand coming into the home. Ship-lap finish is throughout the first floor living spaces. The second floor has two guest bedrooms with dormers facing the view, a full bathroom, loft area and plenty of storage. We employed an efficient use of space with four bedrooms and four baths in just under 3000 square feet. The 2 1/2 car garage has stairs leading to a bonus room. The exterior finishes are low maintenance using a mixture of lap siding, shake siding and board and batten detailing. Standing seam metal roofing emphasizes the window seat and highlights exterior porches. Raised panels also highlight bump outs and other exterior details.
