The design of the living room continues the non-orthogonal concept of the external architecture. The facets enhance the modernity and underline the light beams entering the room from the south west side. The stone color reacts and contrasts in relation to the angle and orientation to the main natural light source in ar array of hues of greys, greens and blues. The continuation of the stone pattern from the outside to the inside emphasizes the flow of the light. Stones and Roses International (SRI) started this challenging piece of work from a general elevation. The first step consisted in building a 3d model in particle board. Then SRI followed through with the 3d Auto-CAD drawing of the stone wall. Folding the stone along the facets, involved the drawing of more than 40 sections which were later assembled at precise angles. The last step consisted of calculating the size and angle of each slab for production. SRI also designed and manufactured the steel structure which was erected parallel and recessed from the stone wall in order to receive the dry fixing anchors for the installation of the stone slabs.

Residential architecture must always have a connection with its landscape: physically and visually. The previous home, despite being located on a beautiful waterfront site, was derelict and not fit for purpose anymore. There was little connection to the water and beach, thus not taking advantage of its waterfront location. A true connection to the water was achieved through adaptable glazing covering the majority of the rear facade and a roof line that is set outwards. Furthermore, the protruding massing orients and aligns itself toward the waterfront, bringing the interior spaces and beach together. Despite the small plot, two accessory dwelling units were erected on the east end, providing additional affordable housing near the city centre. Knowing the clients personally, I was fortunate enough to be trusted with leading the design of this project from its inception. 3D models and plans helped the clients and myself come to design decisions in the context of the site. My plans were signed off by a local drafting company with very minimal changes. The residence has won multiple awards including a first place in the “Residential Infill “ category from the Canadian Homebuilders Association.

The large 20’ x 50’ custom Gunite pool is uniquely designed with a 26’ deep section in the middle. At each end, twin sets of walk-in steps lead to the 12’ shallow sections. The owners love the removable volleyball net which gets erected across the middle to prompt intensely fought games.

Our clients for this grand mountain lodge wanted the warmth and solidness of timber to contrast many of the contemporary steel, glass and stone architecture more prevalent in the area recently. A desire for timberwork with ‘GRRRR’ equipped to handle the massive snowloads in this location, ensured that the timbers were fit to scale this awe-inspiring 8700sq ft residence. Working with Peter Rose Architecture + Interiors Inc., we came up with unique designs for the timberwork to be highlighted throughout the entire home. The Kettle River crew worked for 2.5 years designing and erecting the timber frame as well as the 2 feature staircases and complex heavy timber mouldings and mantle in the great room. We also coordinated and installed the direct set glazing on the timberwork and the unique Unison lift and slide doors that integrate seamlessly with the timberwork. Huge credit should also be given to the very talented builder on this project - MacDougall Construction & Renovations, it was a pleasure to partner with your team on this project.

The goal of this renovation was to replace four external staircases of a 50 year old apartment building next to Cheltenham Beach in Devonport, Auckland. We went to have a look at the stairs and soon realised they were on the verge of collapsing due to advanced corrosion in both the steel stringers and the concrete tread reinforcements. As the stairs were the only access for some of the apartments, we decided to do the work in stages to lessen the impact for the residents. Initially, we removed the balustrade and erected temporary barriers, as well as provided temporary treads to replace the most dangerous and broken ones. We were asked to make the new stairs as close to the original ones as possible. In order to achieve this, we chose to renovate the existing balustrade, and took samples of the broken treads to a concrete paving specialist for the closest match. The frame of the stairs, all the concrete treads, and the landings needed to be replaced entirely, so we fabricated four new stairs in more robust material. We also made sure there were no areas for water to pool, which future proofed them for the next 50 years. Finally, when it came to the installation, we removed the old stairs and installed each new staircase with the refurbished balustrade in a single day to ensure the residents could access their homes when they got home from work.
