Exterior of Pool House: Set in a remote district just outside Halfway, Oregon, this working ranch required a water reserve for fire fighting for the newly constructed ranch house. This pragmatic requirement was the catalyst for the unique design approach — having the water reserve serve a dual purpose: fitness and firefighting. Borrowing from the surrounding landscape, two masses — one gabled mass and one shed form — are skewed to each other, recalling the layered hills that surround the home. Internally, the two masses give way to an open, unencumbered space. The use of wood timbers, so fitting for this setting, forms the rhythm to the design, with glass infill opening the space to the surrounding landscape. The calm blue pool brings all of these elements together, serving as a complement to the green prairie in summer and the snow-covered hills in winter.

Full exterior replacement on this Branson property. We tore off the old roof, installed architectural shingles, and wrapped the building in vertical metal siding. The stone base stayed, so the goal was picking a siding profile and color that worked with it instead of fighting it. Clean vertical lines against the stone gives the whole building a much sharper look. Metal siding holds up well in the Ozarks. It does not rot, it handles hail better than most materials, and it takes almost no maintenance once it is up.

After my renovation, the appliances work with the beautiful cherry wood cabinetry instead of fighting it, appearing balanced and modern alongside the coordinated, sleek hardware. The natural stone and glass mosaic backsplash brings a hint of color from the walls of the formal dining space into the kitchen, giving them a relationship without screaming “I match”.

This kitchen came together with Ornamental White granite on the counters. No waterfall, no fancy backsplash story here, just solid granite doing what granite does best, holding up to real cooking and real life in a busy South Carolina kitchen. We finished the edges with an eased profile, which is the detail people don't think about until they're leaning on the counter every day. An eased edge takes the sharp corner off the slab and rounds it just enough so it's comfortable to work against, without adding a bunch of extra machining that can chip or crack down the line. It's a clean, classic look that doesn't fight with the granite's natural pattern, and it wears well over years of use. Granite is still one of the best choices you can put in a kitchen. It's hard, it's heat resistant, and you can set a hot pan on it without worrying. It'll take a knife dragged across it by accident and shrug it off. Every slab has its own movement in the stone, its own crystal structure catching light differently depending on where you stand, and templating a kitchen like this means matching that pattern at the seams so it reads like one continuous piece instead of two pieces bolted together. Day to day, this countertop is going to earn its keep. Granite seals up easily and, once it's sealed, it resists staining from wine, oil, coffee, whatever gets set down on it. It doesn't scratch from normal kitchen use, and it doesn't dull over time the way some softer stones can. That's why we keep coming back to it for kitchens that actually get used, not just looked at. We fabricate and install jobs like this all over the Midlands, and it's the same story every time: good stone, cut right, set level, edges finished clean. That's what makes a countertop last for decades instead of years, and that's what you're getting here.

Tiffany Crystal quartzite is one of those stones that earns its keep in a kitchen. It's got that cool, crystalline background, whites and grays moving quietly across the surface with enough sparkle in the light to keep it from feeling flat. It reads clean and bright without going stark, which is why it works so well in a kitchen where people actually cook and gather, not just admire counters from across the room. Quartzite is real stone, not engineered, so it comes with natural hardness that holds up to daily kitchen abuse. It resists scratching and handles heat well, though we still tell folks to use a trivet, because no counter needs a hot pan set straight on it just to prove a point. Sealing it right after install and keeping up with it over the years keeps the surface performing the way it should, and Tiffany Crystal takes a seal well because of its tight, dense structure. Fabricating a slab like this takes some care in the layout. We spend real time bookmatching and dry-fitting pieces so the movement in the stone flows across seams instead of fighting itself at the corners. On a kitchen island or a run of perimeter counters, getting that continuity right is what separates a good installation from one that just gets the measurements correct. We kept the edge eased here, which is the right call on a stone with this much personality. It doesn't need extra shaping to draw the eye, the stone's already doing that work. Day to day, this is a kitchen counter that's going to live hard and look good doing it. Quartzite shrugs off knife marks, stands up to acidic spills, and cleans up with regular dish soap and water. It's the kind of surface you stop babying after the first few months because it simply holds up. Jobs like this one in Lexington are what we like seeing come through the shop. It's a straightforward kitchen application done with a stone that's got real depth to it, installed by people who care about how the seams and the veining line up when the job's done. That's the kind of work that keeps the Midlands trade honest.

Tucked beneath the wide canopy of a mature willow, Stone and Fire is an intimate backyard retreat shaped by elevation and anchored by craftsmanship. This space unfolds around a central tree, whose presence offered both inspiration and challenge. Rather than fight the varied topography, we used it—layering spaces and guiding movement with finely built stonework. A master stonemason laid every element by hand: from the outdoor fireplace that anchors the primary gathering space, to the built-in grill and custom countertops that form a quiet culinary hub. Curated hardscape materials—textured flagstone, dry-stacked retaining walls, and tailored stone edging—bring cohesion and warmth. The result is a space that feels both elemental and refined. Designed for connection, Stone and Fire balances intimacy and openness, offering a seamless blend of structure and nature. It’s a place to cook, to gather, and to slow down—where fire meets stone and the landscape holds the memory of every evening spent outdoors.

This project began with an entire penthouse floor of open raw space which the clients had the opportunity to section off the piece that suited them the best for their needs and desires. As the design firm on the space, LK Design was intricately involved in determining the borders of the space and the way the floor plan would be laid out. Taking advantage of the southwest corner of the floor, we were able to incorporate three large balconies, tremendous views, excellent light and a layout that was open and spacious. There is a large master suite with two large dressing rooms/closets, two additional bedrooms, one and a half additional bathrooms, an office space, hearth room and media room, as well as the large kitchen with oversized island, butler's pantry and large open living room. The clients are not traditional in their taste at all, but going completely modern with simple finishes and furnishings was not their style either. What was produced is a very contemporary space with a lot of visual excitement. Every room has its own distinct aura and yet the whole space flows seamlessly. From the arched cloud structure that floats over the dining room table to the cathedral type ceiling box over the kitchen island to the barrel ceiling in the master bedroom, LK Design created many features that are unique and help define each space. At the same time, the open living space is tied together with stone columns and built-in cabinetry which are repeated throughout that space. Comfort, luxury and beauty were the key factors in selecting furnishings for the clients. The goal was to provide furniture that complimented the space without fighting it.

Custom build for a client who loves the brown tones. It was a challenge to work with a limited color pallet on this build. Having to work around the trim, cabinets, and wall colors within a similar color pallet was challenging in that the designer didn't want to have these items fighting against the lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, or even the other materials such as tile and hardwood. We also had the same challenge on the exterior with the brick, stone, roofing, and trim items. The home turned out to be a beauty, but the challenge of working with a set color pallet was one that we had not had to deal with before this build. Philip Slowiak
