Scott and Deneen Knisely built their handcrafted log home in Lock Haven Pennsylvania with hope to preserve a piece of their community’s history. In 2002, the Kniselys lived near a 20-acre property that included the Rocky Point Lodge, a locally known log house dating back more than 70 years. The building was serving as a restaurant at the time, but had taken on many roles over the years—first, and most notably, as a Boy Scout camp. When Scott heard a rumor that the property might be going on the market, he had a word with the owner, expressing his interest in buying it. Six weeks later, the acreage was his. “We loved the property and the building,” says Deneen, “but it was too damaged to be saved.” So they got to work researching companies to build the new home that would replace the old one. Since so many local people have fond childhood memories of time spent at the lodge, the Kniselys decided that the new structure should resemble the old one as closely as possible, so they looked for a design that would use the same footprint as the original. After a quick trip to Virginia to look at an existing house, they chose a modified version of the “Robinson,” a 3,750-square-foot plan by Hearthstone Inc. “When the house was being built, I researched things such as period molding depth, wainscoting height and the look of the floors,” says Deneen. Hearthstone even had the logs sandblasted to give them a weathered look. “We just love the rustic, warm feeling of a log home,” Deneen adds. “No other home compares.” The home is made from large-diameter eastern white pine in a profile from the Bob Timberlake series. “The log is sawn on two sides, then hand-hewn to a 6-inch thickness with varying heights,” says Ernie. To top off the home’s vintage look, Pat Woody of Lynchburg, Virginia, got to work on the chinking. Pat specializes in period reproductions and historical homes. The variations in the chinking are the perfect finishing touch to bring home the 19th-century flavor the Kniselys desired.

Our firm designed a new living room space out of a tired and partially finished attic room. The walls were completely redone and painted. Floors were carpeted and new lighting added. The space was painted yellow and furnished with a Victorian flavor.

The new owners opted to replace the aging, historically inappropriate vinyl siding on this Wicker Park single family home with double-dipped McNear “Limehouse" thin brick. Believe it or not, there's a red brick under those two coats of limewash! Initially, these easy-going homeowners sought out a pure white brick, but ended up using this rustic alternative instead. Notes of the red brick subtly peek through the lime, giving the residence an old world flavor. These bricks were attached using Glen Gery ThinTech panels, and will be sealed soon to protect the wash and allow for easy maintenance. Contrary to popular belief, siding is actually more expensive to take care of over time than masonry! A special shoutout goes to woman-owned business D. Jones Construction, whose interest in learning all about this unique product before install was welcomed and appreciated!

A beautiful Transitional kitchen design with Traditional elements. A decorative wood hood with tile insert details was incorporated over the range. X mullion stacked upper cabinetry with glass and LED lighting highlights this impressive feature. Magic corner & corner drawers base storage cabinets were used to maximize storage in the base corner locations. Existing drywall vent cover & wire rack closet pantry was removed and cabinet pantries were cleverly used to house vent and allow a storage of narrow items around the vent while full depth storage was accessible by the old closet area. Bar storage drawers were added to the wine cooler area. Fridge & Freezer were enclosed with cabinetry materials and an added narrow pantry for spice storage. Products used were Miralis cabinetry, Fully Integrated Liebherr Fridge & Freezer, LED cabinetry & ceiling lighting, Silestone Altair quartz tops, C-Tech Lucerne Ice White Quartzo sink, Vent a Hood blower and Walker Zanger vintage Oyster backsplashes that added a beautiful flavor to the kitchen. This recent renovation project began with a desire to open up the kitchen to the family room. Today everyone seems to want the big island to live and entertain around, right? I always recommend taking your time during the planning phase—6 weeks at least! Kitchens and bathrooms are highly functional areas, so you want to give yourself time to think thoughts like, “where am I going to put all my plastic cups?” I ask my clients lots of questions during this phase to help them design a kitchen that truly has a place for everything. Appliances and plumbing are part of this phase as well. Once the cabinet design was finalized, the demo began! Because that troublesome wall was load bearing, so the GC, Miland Home Construction, had to install a beam to support the second floor. But once that was done, boy we had a lot of space to work with! Picking your countertops is a little like picking an ice cream flavor: you really want to see all your options! Not only is function important here, but your counter material is really a major element of the kitchen, so pick one you love! This client fell in love with Taj Mahal Quartzite. The backsplash was the next layer of fun. Now the mood of the kitchen becomes clear. Will it be elegant? Homey? Rustic? Picking the lighting then becomes like the fine tuner on a microscope, adjusting the view to its perfect clarity. With construction underway, and the mood of the new space established, soft furnishings become the focus. Layering in luxurious, yet durable fabrics are the name of the game for most families. We all want beautiful spaces that can stand up to spouses, kids, and pets! It’s always a lot fun to select a deep and comfy sofa and chairs! The finishing touches are what really give the project that designer look—so be sure to save room in the budget for art, window treatments, and accessories. In this home I wallpapered the wall behind the tv with a subtle grasscloth, selected a large abstract to center the room, and echoed its colors throughout the accessories. The result is eye-pleasing indeed: soft, textured, interesting and peaceful. This busy family was thrilled with the results.

This newly constructed home is Mediterranean at heart but also embraces the Northwest vernacular. We designed every detail of the home from the inside out starting with an old world rustic flavor of rich warm tones, heavy rock work and classic architectural details. We incorporated dark stained distressed oak floors reminiscent of wine barrels, natural stone tiles, hand finished textured earthtone walls, accented with espresso stained custom built-ins and stair railings. The couple wanted to bring the flavor of their Lone Star State garden and its spatial relationships to lush Palm Beach, and they wanted to spend time outdoors. The resulting carefully articulated garden features a series of “rooms” for dining, lounging and entertaining – day and night – arrayed around a classically elegant pool. The layered plantings provide a richly textured green backdrop with palm trees offering some shade. Colorful accents come from bright pink blooms of bougainvillea climbing the side of the house and wrapping about the brick columns of an existing pergola that was redesigned and relocated to one end of the pool.
