Cooking for Two Location: Plymouth, MN, United States When this couple’s last child graduated from college they began the process of looking for a new home. After a lengthy search they decided to stay with the neighborhood they loved, saving money by remodeling rather than starting over. The top priorities on their wish list were adding character to their 1990’s era home with a classic white kitchen and a larger island while keeping within the existing footprint. With the intention of honing their cooking skills, they were also considering better appliances and two ovens. Challenges and Solutions Design a larger island with seating for at least two. The existing island was small and the area behind the seating was less than recommended clearances. To solve this challenge, the seating area of the island was extended out into the open area of the kitchen. This created a larger island with seating for three, extra storage and a bookshelf across from the range. The original kitchen had a range with microwave above, so adding another oven was a challenge with limited wall space. Because the adjoining dining room is used infrequently, the homeowner was open to placing the second oven and microwave in the walkway. This made room for the small buffet between the built in refrigerator and ovens, creating one of her favorite areas. The client requested a white painted kitchen but wanted to make sure it had warmth and character. To achieve this the following elements were chosen: 1) Cabinets painted with Benjamin Moore Capitol White, a luminous and warm shade of white. 2) The Range hood was painted with warm metallic shades to reflect the bronze of the Ashley Norton hardware. 3) Black Aqua Grantique granite was chosen for countertops because it looks like soapstone and adds contrast. 4) Walker Zanger Café tile in Latte was chosen for it’s handmade look with uneven edges. 5) The to-the-counter-cabinet with glass door shows off serving dishes and lends sophisticated charm. The result is a welcoming classic kitchen, where this couple enjoys cooking more often and sharpening their skills with gourmet appliances. Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces. We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem. Extensive alterations include: - a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout - vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness - redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage - the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other - added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space - drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan - placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel - incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed - moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic - mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences - custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting - development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker - energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain

This beautiful secondary bathroom is a welcoming space that will spoil and comfort any guest. The 8x8 decorative Nola Orleans tile is the focal point of the room and creates movement in the design. This Houston bathroom features polished chrome and a black-and-white palette, lending plenty of glamour and visual drama. "We incorporated many of the latest bathroom design trends - like the metallic finish on the claw feet of the tub; crisp, bright whites and the oversized tiles on the shower wall," says Outdoor Homescapes' interior project designer, Lisha Maxey. "But the overall look is classic and elegant and will hold up well for years to come." As you can see from the "before" pictures, this 300-square foot, long, narrow space has come a long way from its outdated, wallpaper-bordered beginnings. "The client - a Houston woman who works as a physician's assistant - had absolutely no idea what to do with her bathroom - she just knew she wanted it updated," says Outdoor Homescapes of Houston owner Wayne Franks. "Lisha did a tremendous job helping this woman find her own personal style while keeping the project enjoyable and organized." Let's start the tour with the new, updated floors. Black-and-white Carrara marble mosaic tile has replaced the old 8-inch tiles. (All the tile, by the way, came from Floor & Décor. So did the granite countertop.) The walls, meanwhile, have gone from ho-hum beige to Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. (The trim is Reflective White, also by Sherwin Williams.) Polished "Absolute Black" granite now gleams where the pink-and-gray marble countertops used to be; white vessel bowls have replaced the black undermount black sinks and the cabinets got an update with glass-and-chrome knobs and pulls (note the matching towel bars): The outdated black tub also had to go. In its place we put a doorless shower. Across from the shower sits a claw foot tub - a 66' inch Sanford cast iron model in black, with polished chrome Imperial feet. "The waincoting behind it and chandelier above it," notes Maxey, "adds an upscale, finished look and defines the tub area as a separate space." The shower wall features 6 x 18-inch tiles in a brick pattern - "White Ice" porcelain tile on top, "Absolute Black" granite on the bottom. A beautiful tile mosaic border - Bianco Carrara basketweave marble - serves as an accent ribbon between the two. Covering the shower floor - a classic white porcelain hexagon tile. Mounted above - a polished chrome European rainshower head. "As always, the client was able to look at - and make changes to - 3D renderings showing how the bathroom would look from every angle when done," says Franks. "Having that kind of control over the details has been crucial to our client satisfaction," says Franks. "And it's definitely paid off for us, in all our great reviews on Houzz and in our Best of Houzz awards for customer service." And now on to final details! Accents and décor from Restoration Hardware definitely put Maxey's designer touch on the space - the iron-and-wood French chandelier, polished chrome vanity lights and swivel mirrors definitely knocked this bathroom remodel out of the park!

The bathrooms in our homes are serene respites from busy lives. Exquisite cabinets and plumbing hardware complement the subtle stone and tile palette. The design rejects the traditional New England house with its enclosing wall and inward posture. The bathroom floor and walls are white Thassos marble.

This main floor bathroom had to function not only as a Powder Room for guests but also be easily accessible to the backyard pool for the family to change and wash up. Combining the weathered wood vanity and shower wall tiles with the crisp shell-inspired mirror and sand-like floor tile we’ve achieved a space reminiscent of the beach just down the road.
