We planned on a full kitchen remodel for this project. Our goal was to increase countertop space, widen the working triangle, improve the lighting plan, and expand the circulation between rooms.
To achieve a wider visual and functional connection from the kitchen to the dining room, we opened up the wall between the dining room and kitchen.

Huge vaulted screen porch with wood-burning fireplace and direct access to the oversized deck spanning the home’s back, all accessed by a 12-foot, bi-fold door from the great room

Our design vision was to create a home that was one of a kind, and fit each and every need of the client. We created an open floor plan on the first floor with 10 ft ceilings and expansive views out to the main floor balcony.
The first floor also features a primary suite, also referred to as “the apartment” where our homeowners have a primary bath, walk-in closet, coffee bar and laundry room.
The primary bedroom includes a vaulted ceiling with direct access to the outside deck and an accent trim wall. The primary bath features a large open shower with multiple showering options and separate water closet.
The second floor has unique elements for each of their children. As you walk up the stairs, there is a bonus room and study area for them. The second floor features a unique split level design, giving the bonus room a 10 ft ceiling.
As you continue down the hallway there are individual bedrooms, second floor laundry, and a bathroom that won’t slow anyone down while getting ready in the morning.

Bold color in a turn-of-the-century home with an odd layout, and beautiful natural light. A two-tone shower room with Kohler fixtures, and a custom walnut vanity shine against traditional hexagon floor pattern. Photography: @erinkonrathphotography Styling: Natalie Marotta Style

Photo from 2018. The clients desired to have a finished basement; turning the unfinished space into a vacation getaway. We turned the basement into a modern log cabin. Using logs, exposed beams, and stone, we gave the client an Up North vacation getaway right in their own basement! This project was originally completed in 2003. Styling has changed a bit, but as you can see it has truly stood the test of time.

Our clients came to us wanting a total refresh of their first floor common areas.
They wanted a new and modern aesthetic carried through from the mudroom to the kitchen to the living room.
Although the overall layout of these spaces worked pretty well, the materials felt outdated and there were a few pinch points to work out.
Another key goal was to create a large mudroom with a locker room feel to accommodate a family involved in many sports.
Our design aimed to address the overall aesthetics but also specifically bring more light into the kitchen, provide a true kitchen pantry, plan for a dedicated entertainment counter, and create a large formal mudroom with ample, organized storage.

Mudroom, complete with custom bench and shelving, as well as uniquely (diagonally) installed Saltillo tile.

Mid-sized transitional freestanding desk study room photo in Columbus with multicolored walls

This kitchen is home to two taller individuals who both use the space equally and requested a taller workspace to comfortably accommodate their needs. The island cabinets are standard 34-1/2” tall but the Iceberg countertops were installed with a 3” build-up to add height to the island. Cabinets on the long wall were designed to break up the wall of white: buffet on the end with walnut-framed glass cabinets and seashell backsplash; double refrigerators in a painted, distressed mahogany finish were pulled forward to simulate texture and depth on the wall; wide pantry cabinets with roll-out drawers sitting on the countertops flank the refrigerators. On the opposite wall, a new window box at the kitchen sink was built to add more countertop behind the sink and to let in more light, adding dimension to the room.
The cabinetry in the original existing kitchen was disjointed at the dining room entrance and made the room appear much smaller than it really was. To remedy this, the entry to the dining room from the kitchen was closed up and relocated around the corner from the foyer; 2 simple, stacked columns were built to highlight the new opening. These transitional style columns and wider room openings at the family room and dining room entrances provide an open layout suitable for large groups to mingle comfortably; family room cabinetry and dining room fireplace surround matches kitchen cabinets.
