DL solutions inc. managed the design and installation of a motorized louvered roof system within a newly constructed pergola. Working with the contractor for the pergola throughout its design and construction, we were able to ensure compatibility with the louvered roof system. The finished product has exterior powder coated, operable louvers to block or expose sun as desired, and also provides protection against rain; all controlled via keypad and a radio frequency remote.

Hammer & Hand built this custom listening room for a Portland audiophile. To isolate the room from the rest of the home and improve the listening experience the space includes a self-contained minisplit heat pump and a dedicated cryogenically-treated electricity system. Tibetan bowls allow the client to tune the room. Noted acoustic engineer Art Noxon positioned gray bass traps along the walls of the room so bass frequencies penetrate the walls instead of bouncing around the room. The team removed a bathroom to increase the size of the space to 11 x 17. Double sound attenuating doors lock sound into the room and keep the rest of the home quiet. The millwork is detailed with an admirable restraint — reveal-shadow gaps rather than architraves, concealed pivot hinges, and slim bronze-toned frames that read as drawn lines rather than mouldings. Overhead, a stepped soffit and recessed cornice detail lower the datum at the corridor, then release into the fuller ceiling height of the alcove; the effect is subtly perspectival, drawing the eye toward the luminous aperture. The punched window, generously reveal-deep and set within a wide oak surround, functions less as a view and more as a light well, its frosted glazing dissolving the exterior into pure illuminated field. The upholstered bench, centered beneath it and flanked casually by a pair of double-monk shoes, provides the anthropometric anchor — a note of inhabited scale that keeps the geometry from tipping into abstraction. **Paragraph 2: Materiality, Color & Texture** The palette operates within an exceptionally disciplined tonal register — a graduated field of oyster, greige, bone, and pale putty, all sharing a warm mineral undertone that prevents the achromatic scheme from turning cold. The hero surface is undoubtedly the wardrobe fronts: a hand-applied, gesso-like plaster or lacquered artisanal finish, its brushed and troweled passages bearing faint calligraphic incisions and pinpricked stitch-like perforations, evoking a Japanese ink study or an aged fresco fragment. Against this painterly softness, the joinery frames and window casings deliver rift-sawn oak with a fine, linear grain, while the perimeter walls are dressed in a subtly striated textile or grasscloth wallcovering punctuated by small inlaid tesserae — a low-frequency rhythm that reads as texture at distance and as craft detail at proximity. Hardware provides the scheme's only true contrast: elongated blackened-bronze pulls, rectilinear and unornamented, act as punctuation marks on the pale field. This 2022 project was a fully custom mix and writing suite designed for multi-Grammy and Dove Award–winning producer and songwriter Kyle Lee. The goal was to create an environment that mirrors his creative workflow—quiet, natural, highly accurate, and intentionally crafted for long sessions of collaboration and focused work. The layout is compact but feels open thanks to high ceilings, soft daylight from the surrounding windows, and a palette of warm textures and natural materials. The room maintains a clean, grounded aesthetic without sacrificing technical performance, balancing style and acoustical precision in a way that supports both creativity and accuracy. Acoustic isolation was a core priority. The suite is fully separated from the rest of the home using sound-reducing wall assemblies, custom bass management including a full soft-ceiling trap and a false rear wall trap, and full-lite doors designed for controlled leakage. The result is a private, self-contained environment that integrates seamlessly with the home’s flow yet transforms into a focused creative space the moment the doors close. Monitoring was built around Kyle’s preferred ATC SCM45A loudspeakers, paired with Dynaudio subwoofers and calibrated specifically to the room’s frequency response. Every treatment, material, and speaker position was selected to ensure what Kyle hears while mixing precisely translates to the final master. Built to the highest standards, it is a true “green” building, green in the context of being true to nature and sensitive to Earth’s demands. The application of BioGeometry® has created a habitat that promotes a frequency of optimum health and well-being for the occupants. Blending with the neighbouring houses (as required by the Building Department) and built with natural materials, this home is a beacon of health, affecting the surrounding neighbourhood. The BioGeometric principles used in the design and construction allow the house to have a positive effect on pollution and on any deleterious EMF emissions caused by high-tension wires and cellphone towers.

ELIMINATING ECHOS IN A LUXURY POOL HOUSE Innovative & Unobtrusive Acoustic Treatments Engaged By WSDG-Brasil BELO HORIZONTE, BRASIL: How do you keep your pool house from reverberating like a gymnasium? For the owners of a luxurious villa set amidst of one of Brasil’s most breathtaking landscapes, the views and the pastoral silence were priceless. A wide expanse of windows surrounding the infinite lap pool draw attention to the spectacular mountains and gardens framing this opulent weekend residence. Intrusive echoes of laughter and music were unacceptable. The critical acoustical designs devised by WSDG Brasil for the villa’s home theater and other living spaces were inspired by the firms’ professional recording studio expertise. Inhibiting sound from invading or escaping sensitive listening areas is a WSDG specialty. The enclosed pool and spa area, however presented uniquely troubling waters. Especially challenging was the requirement that the acoustical treatments unobtrusively compliment the sumptuous custom finishes. In addition to the 46’ long, 10’ wide lap pool, the 2100 sq. ft structure includes a gym, Jacuzzi and wet bar, bounded by three walls of double height windows. A movable glass sealing system was installed to maintain interior warmth during the cool, mountain region evenings. Prognosis? Warm, but noisy. Here, professional recording studio design techniques provided solutions. Each window, including an expansive skylight grid comprised of 24 individual 7’x5’motorized Italian glass panels, was fitted with two layers of Clearsorber™ Foil special micro-perforated transparent foil with 1” of air space separating the layers. Mounting the foil layers 2” below the glass skylight insured optimal sound absorption. Developed in Germany, these innovative translucent plastic sheets absorb medium and high frequency reverberation to resolve sonic reflection issues. “We have hung panels of this material in front of glass windows in recording studios,” explains WSDG Brasil, GM Renato Cipriano. “They have proved very effective in helping us ‘tune’ rooms without obstructing views. Now they are proving equally helpful in this residential application.” The foil’s full transparency insures unimpeded views and eliminates traditional pool house reverberation. Happily, the product also serves as a UV ray filtering system. Cipriano reports that special attention was also devoted to the pool house floor which is situated over a large machine room. “A number of generators, pumps and air conditioning units live beneath the pool,” he says. “Thanks to our acoustic treatments, they hum away doing their jobs without making their presence known to the guests.” Morro do Chapeau was designed by celebrated Brasilian architect Eduarda Correa.
