Corvus ConstructionSometimes great things come from small things and this entryway project was exactly like that. This very small yet interesting project started almost by accident.
Entryway TileI had completed a tile job a few months before and had some high quality porcelain tile left over. It was nice tile so I was hesitant to toss it out but after moving the pile around my shop for several months I finally decided to throw it away. While loading my pickup with miscellaneous construction garbage – and this great tile – one of my neighbors stopped by for a chat about some of my recent projects.
I showed him the great left over tile that I was throwing away and asked him if he had any interest in taking it off my hands – for free. He said he was actually thinking about replacing his existing tile landing at his house because although it had been redone just a few years ago, it had cracked. We went over and took a look at his landing and decided the scrap tile might be a perfect solution.
tile floorI told my neighbor “you come up with any design you want, and I’ll bring that to life.” He came up with an idea and sketched out the idea within a couple of days. As soon as I looked at the sketches, I knew it was going to be a very challenging project, but I also knew it would be a rewarding project I would be proud to put the Corvus name on.
We took the final sketch and imported it into a graphics design program to make the focal point of the design work within the existing space and fine tune the look of the project to fit the available space of the entryway. This was going to be a highly customized undertaking that was going to be all about the details.
Because every tile had to be custom cut, I printed out the final design from the program to create a stencil to trace the outline on each tile. After all of the painstaking tile cutting, I laid it out in a mock-up on the entry floor. Then we were ready to overcome our next challenge – the flexing and moving sub floor.
The existing tile landing that we were replacing had been installed just a few years earlier but had already cracked down the center. This fracture made me realize that we needed to find a way to somehow decouple the substrate from the finished tile surface to prevent the same problem from cropping up again.
tile floor entrywayI decided to go with a Schluter-DITRA™ tile underlay for this job. Working with DITRA™ was surprisingly simple. The only thing you need to remember is to use unmodified thinset mortar when setting tile over this substrate, because modified thinset would take a very long time to cure. We also decided to use QuartzLock™ urethane grout for the floor because it expands and contracts when the floor flexes under foot traffic and could help prevent future cracking.
In the end the project came out great! My neighbor is thrilled and can’t wait to show it off to anyone that stops by. This is a great example of how custom work can really amp up the appeal of your home and how a small change can make a big difference in the look of your home.

Deskins Group LLCThis siding repair started with a challenge: a poorly performing window unit had leaked down the side wall, destroying the remaining fiberboard siding. The lower half had already been replaced with Hardie siding, but the damage above called for a full upgrade. We removed the compromised material and installed new 12" Hardie Cedarmill siding to match. After a deep clean of the existing Hardie Plank and fresh coat of paint across the entire wall, the transformation is seamless—everything looks brand new.
We also helped install the new window unit and rerouted the drain line to prevent future water damage. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in long-term performance.

We recently remodeled a studio we purchased for guests who visit us. The project included the demolition of a kitchenettem and a bathroom, and the installation of new cabinets, wood flooring, granite countertops, appliances, wood molding and a custom Murphy bed in the sleeping area.

Michael Nash Design, Build & HomesA young family in a new development and wanting more out of their home decided to remodel the 2500 square feet of unfinished space in their basement. Their goals were to have a future au-pair suite, large entertainment area, multi -seating spaces, a gym, and last but not the least, a state-of-the- art home theater. Additionally, they have been accustomed to large gatherings with 50 and more guests, so it was essential to have a large bar/kitchenette area serving the dual purpose.
The highlight of this renovation is the new home movie theatre. Complete with HD screen, projector and sound system, the motif for the room is the Renaissance, complete with fluted columns and arched panel walls. Double wood theatre doors open to theatre seating featuring burgundy leather theatre recliners.
The basement also touts a large au-pair bedroom suite, large walk-in closet and full bath furnished with walk-in shower stall, built-in bench and niches, frameless glass enclosure, cherry vanity cabinets and brick color porcelain tiles.
A custom bar/kitchenette uses cherry stained cabinets with dark granite countertops. It offers a built-in oven, microwave, wine coolers and a full refrigerator.

Deck & Drive SolutionsI have worked for many past years with this homeowner. This year they were ready for a new deck and design. The goals of this deck was to create useful outdoor living areas and minimize the amount of railing. Another goal was to be maintenance free with a possible roof addition later. We came up with a few designs and then chose one that had 2 levels. The upper level was designed for a future roof for next year to be built on for Summer Shade. The lower level was designed close to the ground without railing. Because of no rail – we did add some deck dot lights around the border so in the evening – you can see the edge of the deck for safety purposes. The product that was chosen was Timbertech’s PVC Capped Composite Decking in the Terrain Series. Colors were Brown Oak for the main and then accented with Rustic Elm. The railing was Westbury’s Full Aluminum Railing (Tuscany Series) in the black color. We then added lighting on all of the steps as well as on top of the picture frame border of the lower deck. This deck turned out great. This late Winter/Early Spring, we will be building a roof above – pictures to come after completion.
Part 2 of this project we did in Spring of the next year. We built a new Roof over the main deck with an aluminum ceiling. This project turned out great and even matches the 3D Schematic!
