The coffered ceiling, designed to hid existing ducts, suggest an appropriate formality reserved for formal dining rooms. Built-in cabinetry adds reflects the geometry on the ceiling, while housing storage for the space. Recessed downlighting highlight the area. Adding to the mirrors is a third wall of glass blocks, allowing light to flow from the dining room into the corridor leading to the Master Suite. The chairs are designed by Josef Hoffmann and the Dining Room table is designed by David Estreich. A single light pendent casts ambient lighting throughout.

A 30' square floor plan with 4 interior columns creates the structure in conjunction with all SIPS construction. All siding was pre-finished with only minor site touch-up. Heavy wide white trim off-sets the simple monopoly geometry.

The retaining wall is constructed of Angelus Glacier White precision block with a sandblasted finish. The tight geometry is balanced by vibrant succulents on the adjacent slope. The BBQ station is faced with smooth white plaster and a gray colored Dekton countertop. The property is surrounded by lush green bamboo and other greenery.

This Foothills Contemporary House stands at the edge of a steep mountain slope, looking down into a deep ravine and out to distant snowy peaks. Conforming to its rugged site, this house stacks three stories tall and stretches along a north-south axis, framing views of the vast western landscape from almost every living space in the house. This home is characterized by a dynamic geometry of simple forms shifting in and out of alignment, stacking and sometimes perforating each other.

The geometry of the ceiling details in this room are translated into the character of the mirror, the cabinetry, and other furnishings within this room.

A contemporary residential project in Los Angeles defined by a strong connection between architecture, landscape, and light. The design explores open spatial organization, clean geometries, and a refined material palette to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. Carefully framed views and natural light enhance the overall sense of openness and continuity throughout the home.

A contemporary Polynesian hut: that was the idea our clients brought us when they asked Charles Rose Architects to do a second project on their expansive property on the Charles River, southwest of Boston. All agreed that the new pool house should be wood construction—in part, to create a similar look and feel to the first project we designed there, a “play barn” with two large rooms, separated by an outdoor space that frames views of an adjacent pond. Our clients had won approval from a local conservation commission for a rectangular structure. We started by carving out a corner, creating a spacious covered outdoor sitting area. The heavy timber frame supports a modified gabled roof; the peak is pulled off-center so that the pool house subtly connects with the geometry of the play barn. This residence is located on the banks of the Snake River. Drawing inspiration from the adjacent braided river channels, the precise layout form unique relationships to the site from each room, as well as dynamic views and spatial experiences. The sequence of interior spaces gradually unfolds to reveal views of the pond, river and mountains beyond. The skewed geometry creates shifting views between interior spaces and levels. A three-story stair atrium brings light into the core of the house, gracefully connects floor levels, and creates a transition from the public to private zones of the house. The volume of the house cantilevers to cover an exterior dining area and spans to frame the entrance into the house and the river beyond. The exterior rain screen on the clean modern forms creates continuity with the surrounding cottonwood forest.

This side view highlights the clean Scandinavian silhouette, gently curved headboard, rounded frame details, and sturdy platform construction. Designed for modern interiors, the bed combines minimalist geometry with soft organic curves for a refined and comfortable bedroom aesthetic.

This visually simple, modern solution is unique within its suburban context, and gives this family the custom landscape of their dreams. The homeowners’ wish list included a modern design and clearly defined spaces: a larger dining patio, firepit patio, hot tub, and a 4-season sport court (which gets flooded for ice hockey in the winter). Circulation and screening were key in Ground One’s landscape design. A sport court could overwhelm the entire backyard, so it was raised three feet above the primary backyard to physically separate different spaces, and minimize its visual impact. Rectangular bluestone in a running bond pattern was used in all the gathering spaces (dining, firepit, hot tub). Bluestone walls reinforce a simple material palette. A larger dining patio was installed near the house for greater entertaining flexibility. Plank paver paths connect to a private hot tub area and allow kids to don hockey gear and enter the sport court without messing up the house. The firepit patio is at the back of the property, nestled into the existing hillside under a large oak and below the sport court terrace. Plantings reinforce the geometry of each gathering space, provide focal points, and create layers of screening and separation from any given vantage point. Hardy species were selected for their low-maintenance requirements and various seasons of interest. Landscape lighting was incorporated to provide way finding between the patios, accent various hardscape elements, and highlight the trees.

Nestled into a tree-covered hilltop in Fairfax CA this simple timber-framed house exploits what many have considered to be a very restrictive and constrained site too small to develop. The perimeter of the house follows exactly the site and its set back lines thus dictating the overall size and volume. The house was designed for a young couple as a starter home in this desirable area where they would normally be priced out. The strict budget influenced the design of standard off-the-shelf components and an easy and quick construction sequence minimalizing the build time. The house straddle’s a small brook in a ravine at the apex of a hairpin bend on an unincorporated road. Supported on eight concrete peers elevating the house to road level, the layout of the house is based on a simple twelve-foot grid, with an adjoining six-foot tapering sliver along the north-facing long edge, giving the overall footprint the shape of a blunt wedge. Accessed over a triangular bridge dictated by site lines, the entrance is via a covered porte cochere with a balcony above. The entranceway can be closed for security by means of a large sliding door of matching slatted wood. The entrance proper is via a stock sliding glass patio door to the main living space. The choice of sliding window is repeated throughout the building. In its current flexible configuration, the living space is a double-height experience, beyond which on the left centrally located is a spiral staircase leading to the bedroom and bathroom above. Both these rooms have built-in storage. Both bedrooms boast a double-height slopping ceiling; clerestory windows that give the building its distinctive character, and a balcony. On the ground floor beyond the spiral staircase is built-in and concealed fully equipped kitchen and open plan dining area, beyond which, externally and underneath one of the bedroom balconies is an outdoor bbq kitchen.
