Inspiration for a contemporary home design remodel in Austin

This classic post-and-beam house sits on a ridge in the Riviera neighborhood of Santa Barbara, CA. With stunning views of Gibraltar Rock, Mission Canyon, and Cielito Overlook, the house’s original designers sited it perfectly and implemented an elegantly simple structural system based on a clear design vision. Unfortunately, several subsequent owners lacked that same clarity and made questionable remodeling choices based on passing style fads, effectively turning the house into something it was not and – most perplexing of all – turning their backs to the majesty of the surrounding mountains and valley. Working with the new owner, who saw through the noise of these misguided remodels, we set out to return the house to its roots and recreate its rhythmic geometry and interior flow. We added new wall-to-wall double sliding doors that open to the expansive northern views, bringing space and light to the living, dining, and kitchen areas and providing easy access to the surrounding natural environment. We also reconsidered the color palette and materials, simplified detailing and trim, and highlighted interior focal points such as the original slump block fireplace and newly remodeled kitchen. The house now entertains easily and provides a comfortable and gracious living space for its owner and guests.

Troia Light Travertine develops its warm cream and amber tonality across millions of years of sedimentary compression. Cut into a two-piece freestanding pedestal sink — a soft rectangular basin set above a cylindrical column — the geometry is resolved with quiet architectural authority. The honed, partially filled surface leaves authentic textures intact for an earthy, tactile depth, allowing the stone's inherent tonal variance to read as material fact rather than decoration. - Purchased as a newly completed spec home built by Robert Elliott Custom Homes, the beauty of the steel windows let in an abundance of light. We chose to add personality of the family by painting numerous walls, adding layers of wallcovering in majority of the spaces, replaced light fixtures and carefully designed each room with touches of geometry to continue the classic approach.

The Tokyo Contemporary Italian Dining Table by Tonin Casa represents a truly extraordinary look of today’s modern design. Made in Italy, the Tokyo Dining Table offers an eye-catching design incorporated into its base; two curved, overlapping elements create an “x” shaped base that’s both striking and sturdy. Additionally, this elegant Italian dining table offers convenient optional extensions, which make this table not only exceedingly beautiful but functional and inviting one too.

A steeply sloping property in the Franklin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles is the site for this 200 square foot writer’s studio, labeled the “Black Box” for its minimal geometry and dark stained cladding. Floating above an existing residence and capturing a panoramic view of Griffith Park and its famed Observatory, the Black Box serves as the office for a technology author and columnist. Entry to the structure is obtained by ascending the hillside stairs and passing below the tree canopy enveloping the studio. A custom fabricated steel fenestration system opens to the entry platform though a pair of telescoping doors. The assembly turns the corner and terminates in a picture window, directing the occupant to the expansive views. Modern backyard retreat with minimalist elements. A concrete patio with square modular pavers leads up to a raised Ipe wood deck. The spa is raised with a concrete coping seat bench and an infinity edge glass spillway. The pool has a concrete coping and white plaster. The main concrete area is accented by charcoal beach pebble. The retaining wall is constructed of Angelus Glacier White precision block with a sandblasted finish. The tight geometry is balanced by vibrant succulents on the adjacent slope. The BBQ station is faced with smooth white plaster and a gray colored Dekton countertop. The property is surrounded by lush green bamboo and other greenery.

For this extensive gut renovation in the East Village, the goal was to inject a small, functional bathroom with high-energy personality and bold spatial defining. We achieved this through a dramatic two-tone, color-blocked tile application, featuring a vibrant ultramarine blue wainscoting that lowers the visual height and frames the space. This is balanced by a zellige-inspired textural white tile above, adding depth and artisanal warmth. The true centerpiece is the custom, coral-pink concrete vanity, which offers a soft, sculptural contrast to the angular geometry. Layered with mustard yellow and white striped textiles and custom, patterned rugs, the resulting space feels playful, confident, and deeply reflective of its storied neighborhood.

The center of this sanctuary features a dynamic geometric canopy bed reaching toward the ten foot ceilings. The bed is flanked by stylish modern pendant lights that hang above lacquered floating nightstands. Tucked under each nightstand is an eclectic treasure adding a touch of individual style. Pastel pinks, blues, greens, and purples adorn the bed as pillows in lush velvets and textured linens, each fabricated in a unique shape, creating a playful rhythm. A luxurious white fur blanket sits at the foot of the bed and flows onto the lavender suede settee. A collection of custom marble and metal stools play on the geometry of the canopy and offer a place to rest a book or glass of wine. The ceiling, painted in a delicate high gloss turquoise hue helps to bring the height of the room down and at the same time it refracts the light of the crystal center flush mount across the space.

Calacatta Viola marble is defined by its dense white ground fractured with deep burgundy and violet veining — a geological record of mineral intrusion that gives this natural stone sink unmistakable visual intensity. The cylindrical form rises 33 inches as a single monolithic column. A recessed neck detail articulates the transition between basin and base, offering geometric restraint that commands minimalist interiors. This new contemporary home in PIedmont was unanimously and enthusiastically approved by the Planning Commission and neighbors. The wedge-shaped, down-sloped lot informed the geometry of the home and inspired a truly unique design. Use of a butterfly roof allowed us to capture natural light and views at the rear of the house. The sunken library acts as a creative transition from the street level to the bedroom floor below. This feature improves the experience of descending into a reverse floor plan. Some of the family-friendly features include good lines of sight from floor to floor and an au pair suite. The large balconies and patio spaces create an open, indoor/outdoor living experience and, together with the built-in wetbar and wine cellar, make it a gracious entertainment space.
