A Modern Farmhouse set in a prairie setting exudes charm and simplicity. This large addition to a small house built in the 1950s by The Architects Collaborative uses the original formal and material vocabulary to create a dramatic transformation. The new building sits in a slot of space between the existing house and garage and uses their geometry as a format for opening to the landscape and sunlight. The new building contains - A music room, bar and spacious living room with field stone fireplace New light-filled stair to the second floor Family library with window seats and skylights New master bedroom suite overlooks open fields

New white shaker cabinets and a grey-ish brown rustic counter height island with seating for four was added. New wide plank hardwood floors replaced sun bleached cherry wood floors. A Subzero refrigerator, Atlas polished nickle hardware, Feiss glass pendants and handmade Pratt and Larson tiles installed in a stacked, random pattern complete this clean and contemporary kitchen.

We used the timber frame of a century old barn to build this rustic modern house. The barn was dismantled, and reassembled on site. Inside, we designed the home to showcase as much of the original timber frame as possible. The fireplace is double-sided and is in the center of the great room. Photography by Todd Crawford
