With all the durable surfaces, it serves as a practical homework station during the day, but transitions easily into an elegant dining room by night. This project was featured in Midwest Home magazine as the winner of ASID Life in Color. The addition of a kitchen with custom shaker-style cabinetry and a large shiplap island is perfect for entertaining and hosting events for family and friends. Quartz counters that mimic the look of marble were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance. Open shelving with brass sconces above the sink create a focal point for the large open space. Putting a modern spin on the traditional nautical/coastal theme was a goal. We took the quintessential palette of navy and white and added pops of green, stylish patterns, and unexpected artwork to create a fresh bright space. Grasscloth on the back of the built in bookshelves and console table along with rattan and the bentwood side table add warm texture. Finishes and furnishings were selected with a practicality to fit their lifestyle and the connection to the outdoors. A large sectional along with the custom cocktail table in the living room area provide ample room for game night or a quiet evening watching movies with the kids. Great room and outdoor living sequence of a new construction single-level home in Orinda, CA. Full-width black-framed sliding glass doors open the great room completely to a large wood deck, dissolving the boundary between indoor and outdoor living at the home's most social moment. The butterfly shed roofline's two angular planes are dramatically visible from this interior angle, with black-framed clerestory windows and cedar soffits framing redwood and mature tree canopy views above the wall line on both sides simultaneously. The outdoor deck hosts three distinct zones visible through the open wall: a dining area with concrete table and metal chairs to the left, a fire pit lounge seating area at center with cable railing and garden views beyond, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with stainless steel built-in grill and concrete countertop to the right. Inside, a board-formed concrete partial-height feature wall with walnut credenza and flat screen television at left.

Lonicera sempervirens (Coral or Trumpet Honeysuckle) is a native vine, reaching approx. 20' with red tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. Fruit attracts quail, goldfinch, hermit thrush and American robin. Larvel host to the spring azure and spring clearwing moth. Trellises were constructed by the client reusing existing bamboo stakes they already had, a a great do-it-yourself project - reuse, recycle, functional and aesthetically pleasing.

This is a kitchen for entertaining. Since the kitchen island seating accommodates several guests, the host can be a part of the action while using the center kitchen island for meal prep. The traditional kitchen also has dark kitchen cabinets with plenty of built-in storage to make organizing a kitchen—and dinner party—easy.
