The owner of this urban residence, which exhibits many natural materials, i.e., exposed brick and stucco interior walls, originally signed a contract to update two of his bathrooms. But, after the design and material phase began in earnest, he opted to removed the second bathroom from the project and focus entirely on the Master Bath. And, what a marvelous outcome! With the new design, two full­height walls were removed (one completely and the second lowered to knee­wall height) allowing the eye to sweep the entire space as one enters. The views, no longer hindered by walls, have been completely enhanced by the materials chosen. The limestone counter and tub deck are mated with the Rift­cut Oak, Espresso stained, custom cabinets and panels. Cabinetry, within the extended design, that appears to float in space, is highlighted by the under­cabinet LED lighting, creating glowing warmth that spills across the butter­colored floor. Stacked stone wall and splash tiles are balanced perfectly with the honed travertine floor tiles; floor tiles installed with a linear stagger, again, pulling the viewer into the restful space. The lighting, introduced, appropriately, in several layers, includes ambient, task (sconces installed through the mirroring), and “sparkle” (under­cabinet LED and mirror­frame LED). The final detail that marries this beautifully remodeled bathroom was the removal of the entry slab hinged door and in the installation of the new custom five glass panel pocket door. We designed a three season room with removable window/screens and a large sliding screen door. The Walnut matte rectified field tile floors are heated, We included an outdoor TV, ceiling fans and a linear fireplace insert with star Fyre glass. Outside, we created a seating area around a fire pit and fountain water feature, as well as a new patio for grilling.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, GRAND AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL KTICHEN $80,001 -$120,000 This Old Town Alexandria home was ready for a major kitchen renovation. After 20 years of putting up with the dark, short cabinets and a dysfunctional traffic pattern and layout, the owners were ready to roll up their sleeves and throw this kitchen out the window. Design challenges include a peninsula that was too big for the space, appliance locations that were all over, a stackable washer and dryer in the middle of the kitchen and a lack of storage. The first step toward a remodeling solution was to move the washer and dryer to a new lower level laundry area. That created space for a new built-in refrigerator, microwave/oven cabinet, pantry and angular end cabinets. This move also created more room on the walls of kitchen for added cabinetry and countertops. The cook top was moved to one of the walls with a custom wood hood over it. Having removed the old bulkheads, there was space for taller cabinets and some glass front cabinetry (with inside lights) to display china. Large crown molding, along with big arched valances, legs and corbels made this brushed stoke custom cabinetry really stand out. A big knee wall and a middle post made the breakfast room too closed in and separated from adjacent family room. By installing a couple of structural beams, the space was opened up and dressed up with a large arch opening to replicate the front hall columns. Similarly, the front door separating the front hall to the kitchen was taken off, widened and then had the same panel arch treatment done. Now all the doorways in the home have a very classy, yet sophisticated detailed molding. A previously wasted corner area is now home to a custom hutch cabinet. The middle island, not only improved the traffic flow, but also dressed up this kitchen with its furniture look. The expansion of hardwood flooring, from the front hall into the kitchen and beyond, created a seamless transition to the entire first floor. Use of this highly custom brushed stroke glazed cabinetry in a soft vanilla tone complemented the uniqueness of a slab of granite. The light color tumbled marble backsplash made the glazing of this cabinetry stand out. The transformation of this kitchen was so incredible that no one believes the before photos.

The modern kitchen and scullery in this home has it all! Our team custom designed the sleek custom cabinetry to compliment the luxury suite of appliances. The luxury appliances in the kitchen and the scullery include-- a full height wine column, refrigerator and freezer columns, an ice maker, double ovens, a warming drawer, two dishwashers, a 48" gas rangetop, a microwave drawer, a beverage fridge, an undercounter microwave and a wine dispenser center. The kitchen and scullery also feature two undermount sinks, touch faucets, and an instant hot water faucet. The dark chocolate cabinets were designed to function without hardware to provide the streamlined look that we were after in this modern space. We created the channeled wood range hood to mimic the channeled fireplace wall design. Oversized marble-look porcelain slabs cover the walls and island in this expansive kitchen. The custom two-tier waterfall island features a wood bar top counter over a porcelain waterfall countertop. Our team encountered a particularly difficult challenge when designing the island. The architect had placed the AC air intake on the back of the island and the last thing that our design team wanted on the back of the island facing the living room was a large AC grille! So, we designed a "slot" all the way across the back of the island at the knee space to hide the AC air intake. The air intake is actually underneath the strip of porcelain that you see on the back of the island next to the barstools. This was the perfect marriage of function and style and we were thrilled with the sleek solution to this problem. Finally, we designed a custom spot in the corner of the kitchen with open shelves and built in appliances, specifically to house the owner's wine dispenser station and barware. The finishing touches on this beautiful sleek kitchen include geometric light fixtures and custom swivel barstools.

This home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland began as a modest 1927 home with a central hall plan. Renovations included reversing the kitchen and dining room layout , adding a large central island and hood to anchor the center of the kitchen. The island has a walnut counter encircling the working island and accommodates additional seating. The main sink looks out to the north with beautiful water views. The southwest bay window affords a seating area with built-in bookshelves adjoining the breakfast room while the one in the kitchen provides for the secondary sink and clean-up area. By capturing the additional depth in the bay window, a large TV is concealed below the countertop and can emerge with a press of a button or retract out of sight to enjoy views of the water. A separate butler's pantry and wine bar were designed adjoining the breakfast room. The original fireplace was retained and became the center of the large Breakfast Room. Wood paneling lines the Breakfast Room which helps to integrate the new kitchen and the adjoining spaces into a coherent whole, all accessible from the informal entry. The 70th Street project started as an empty and non-functional attic space. We designed a completely new master suite, including a new bathroom, walk-in closet, bedroom and nursery for our clients. The space had many challenges because of its sloped and low ceilings. We embraced those challenges and used the ceiling slopes to our advantage to make the attic feel more spacious overall, as well as more functional for our clients. Photography: Mike Duryea

Our Austin studio decided to go bold with this project by ensuring that each space had a unique identity in the Mid-Century Modern style bathroom, butler's pantry, and mudroom. We covered the bathroom walls and flooring with stylish beige and yellow tile that was cleverly installed to look like two different patterns. The mint cabinet and pink vanity reflect the mid-century color palette. The stylish knobs and fittings add an extra splash of fun to the bathroom. The butler's pantry is located right behind the kitchen and serves multiple functions like storage, a study area, and a bar. We went with a moody blue color for the cabinets and included a raw wood open shelf to give depth and warmth to the space. We went with some gorgeous artistic tiles that create a bold, intriguing look in the space. In the mudroom, we used siding materials to create a shiplap effect to create warmth and texture – a homage to the classic Mid-Century Modern design. We used the same blue from the butler's pantry to create a cohesive effect. The large mint cabinets add a lighter touch to the space.
