To complete the open concept floor plan, non-load bearing walls were removed between the kitchen, dining, and living room, which also required a mechanical systems upgrade. The new contemporary style kitchen was designed with an informal dining area and features beautiful BH Presidio cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, including a GE refrigerator, dual fuel range, and a Zephyr ventilation hood. The walls were accented with Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Grey paint, the windows were replaced with energy efficient Marvin windows, and the floors were finished in beautiful Appalachian Select Red Oak.

My clients fell in love with the location and bones of this spec house, but not the informal style. The finishes were very casual and did not work with their furniture or lifestyle. I had redecorated some rooms in their 19th century home in Baltimore city a few years before, so they called on me to work with their builder to customize this home to fit their taste and needs. A tired 80’s kitchen remodel was more than the new owner of this home could tolerate. Adjacent to it was a well lit reading room, and an idea was sparked. A new layout and design was conceived. Next, reclaimed wood from an old cabin was then collected to become the raw materials for the cabinetry and flooring. The cabinetry wood was milled and painted, the flooring was tooled just enough to show a century’s worth of weathered paint and still be an appropriate surface. High end appliances on the perimeter of the room and the main workspace in the center of the room allow for the many original windows with their low sills to remain. Finishing touches include the select primitive cabinets and a well populated hanging cast iron rack. The kitchen opens to a brick paved patio overlooking a deep backyard. The space that the old kitchen occupied is now an informal reading/family space.

Beyond aesthetic updates, we had to address several issues that the homeowners found frustrating about their old kitchen. The biggest problem was a lack of flow. To create better circulation, we relocated the doorway to the formal dining room and replaced a peninsula with an island. The previous location of the refrigerator was inconvenient; it offered no adjacent counter space and was separated from other work areas by the main traffic path through the kitchen. The new kitchen layout has a more functional work triangle and provides better access to the informal dining space. Relocating a laundry room door allowed us to create a large walk-in pantry; replacing a swinging door with a sliding barn door assures that the walking path remains clear. We paired white Shaker cabinets with Fusion Gray quartzite countertops and selected a complementary gray for the island, completing the design with a custom cherry island top. New hardwood flooring ties the home’s foyer, kitchen and formal/informal dining areas together. Custom millwork in the adjacent dining room adds the finishing touch. Jenn Verrier Photography
