Short on space, our clients turned to us to add a sense joyful play to their otherwise standard New York City apartment interior design with hints of eclectic style and casual chic nuances.
With a restrained hand, out interior designer set about bringing a new life in our clients petite apartment while also introducing easy to maintain, durable surfaces and furnishings as they love to entertain and have a lively St. Bernard. And as they had an extensive book collection and a single three-foot wide closet, the key challenge here was to make the best use of the entire space while injecting it with charming whimsy.
After falling in love with our designer’s presentation, our clients went for a complete apartment overhaul and started from scratch. Since the space is small, our designer Anna S. wanted to create an urgent sense of vibrancy without coming off as too heavy handed. So she worked in expressive colors and decorative extras in small doses for subtle impact.
Starting the project by changing several of the unit’s light fixtures for brighter, more minimal styles, Anna surveyed the apartment room to room to devise clever storage solutions that are easy on the eye.
As they have friends over often, Anna created a warm and inviting living room boasting a slightly feminine take on mid-century modern layered with colorful pillows, patterned rugs, and eclectic art that doesn’t take over the apartment.
In the kitchen, she added a strong yet gender neutral burlap wallpaper, floating wooden shelves, and new plumbing fixtures that were more sophisticated than the original, standard ones in place.
However, our favorite part of the apartment is the moody, statement-making foyer. Though it was a long and narrow barely used, neglected space, Anna brought in wallpaper from Tempaper that features a matte black background covered with gold bird and floral illustrations, and added a long row of black glass cabinets and several large gold mirrors for an added sense of glamorous drama and an extra amount of storage space to boot.

Angie & Amanda began their journey to transform the master bathroom in their new home while overcoming their previous disappointing experiences with contractors. Their goal was to craft a space that reflected their style as well as making their shower functional for them for years to come.
A key change was their decision to remove the existing bathtub, which made space for an over-sized custom shower. This shower includes a dry-off area with multiple towel hooks that were thoughtfully positioned to maximize the space near the window and side wall.
They chose 12" x 24" tiles in Nobleza Lugo with a polished finish for the walls and the matte version for the floor of their dry-off area, ensuring a cohesive design. The shower floor features 2" x 2" square tiles in Contessa Oro, blending perfectly with the walls and floor for a luxurious feel.
One of the highlights was the addition of a large recessed wall niche along with a recessed shaving niche. Both were accentuated with Montage City Chic Glass tiles, injecting a sophisticated and contrasting flair into the shower's functional features.
Angie and Amanda chose to continue this accent throughout their new shower by adding an accent band of the same glass tiles along the shower walls, which introduced another custom touch to the area.
The Delta Lahara shower trim, along with the Delta In2ition shower head, both in the Venetian Bronze finish, enhanced shower experience. A clear frameless tempered glass door with matching hardware completed the look.

Employing design elements that form distinct spaces was key; making a sleek and sophisticated first impression, the distinguished full height double sided fireplace separates the dining and living room without being overbearing. The impressive kitchen island offers a massive gathering and prep space as the pristine double sided waterfall edge draws your eyes to the center of the room. High-Gloss white cabinets reflect the light beaming from the cosmic panoramic door, framed in stately black compliments the living room’s acoustic slate wall. Matte and gloss glass tile randomly placed for texture flank the kitchen walls injecting the perfect balance of pattern and color in this show stealing L-shaped kitchen.

Custom Dining Room with Industrial Direction / Custom "I" Beam Dining Table by Victor js Liberatore, ASID & 1940 Stylized Sideboard by Gail Lieberman Studio

Only the chicest of modern touches for this detached home in Tornto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood. Textures like exposed beams and geometric wild tiles give this home cool-kid elevation. The front of the house is reimagined with a fresh, new facade with a reimagined front porch and entrance. Inside, the tiled entry foyer cuts a stylish swath down the hall and up into the back of the powder room. The ground floor opens onto a cozy built-in banquette with a wood ceiling that wraps down one wall, adding warmth and richness to a clean interior. A clean white kitchen with a subtle geometric backsplash is located in the heart of the home, with large windows in the side wall that inject light deep into the middle of the house. Another standout is the custom lasercut screen features a pattern inspired by the kitchen backsplash tile. Through the upstairs corridor, a selection of the original ceiling joists are retained and exposed. A custom made barn door that repurposes scraps of reclaimed wood makes a bold statement on the 2nd floor, enclosing a small den space off the multi-use corridor, and in the basement, a custom built in shelving unit uses rough, reclaimed wood. The rear yard provides a more secluded outdoor space for family gatherings, and the new porch provides a generous urban room for sitting outdoors. A cedar slatted wall provides privacy and a backrest.

For this extensive gut renovation in the East Village, the goal was to inject a small, functional bathroom with high-energy personality and bold spatial defining. We achieved this through a dramatic two-tone, color-blocked tile application, featuring a vibrant ultramarine blue wainscoting that lowers the visual height and frames the space. This is balanced by a zellige-inspired textural white tile above, adding depth and artisanal warmth. The true centerpiece is the custom, coral-pink concrete vanity, which offers a soft, sculptural contrast to the angular geometry. Layered with mustard yellow and white striped textiles and custom, patterned rugs, the resulting space feels playful, confident, and deeply reflective of its storied neighborhood.

With its decorative mouldings and traditional influences throughout the home, this renovation is a classic take on modernism. Approaching the gates to the property, rich red brick surrounds a beautiful traditional white lacquered timber door with lead lite coloured panels on either side. Entering into the home, deep jarrah planked timber floors lead the way through to the kitchen and living areas.
The kitchen was small for my client who loved to cook as well as her daughter’s love for baking, needing a re- configure of the space to allow the kitchen to flow and function between the existing kitchen and small meals room. Outdated cabinetry made their home look tired and needed a fresh take on the newly architecturally extended home.
Traditional pairings of fresh whites, marbles and glass are delicately detailed within the design, modernising the homes interior. Lacquered chalky slabbed fronts surrounded by marbled benches and splashbacks, the introduction of curves to the isolated hood and island centre piece and depth injected with deep navy to create a monochrome palette. Warmth is then allowed in by brass hardware, reeded glass, a play on texture with tiles and warmly lit surfaces. Now a cook’s kitchen.

A clean-lined dresser with two-tone wood detailing grounds this refined corner, where cool tones and bold artwork inject a splash of energy.

Upon acquiring the property, the homeowner faced a compact backyard dominated by a neglected lawn that offered little usability. The ambition was not only to enhance the outdoor space's utility but to inject it with vibrant aesthetics and dynamism through the hardscape. To bring this vision to life, we embraced a palette of colorful materials, choosing multicolored concrete, pavers, and tiles that introduce a playful yet sophisticated charm. Further creativity was applied in the design through the use of curvy lines that flow organically throughout the space, leading the eye and inviting movement. Beach rocks were thoughtfully embedded into decorative bands, adding a tactile and visual texture that complements the curvilinear approach. This strategic combination of color, texture, and form transformed the backyard into a visually stimulating and highly functional outdoor living area.

LiLu’s most recent work with these long-time clients was to freshen up significant spaces in their Minneapolis home. Staying true to our original concept of creating a traditional, welcoming, and comfortable retreat, these homeowners have expanded on their love for living and entertaining in a sophisticated, yet casual style. The great room is light and bright, featuring two large sofas that anchor the seating areas on both ends of the room. Original pieces of furniture were covered in neutral fabrics that emphasize texture. Accessories inject color and detail into the space. The dining area invites guests to pull up a reupholstered chair and enjoy long conversations around the custom-designed table. A large area rug stretches across the floor as a natural centerpiece of color and pattern. It’s one of several, including the whimsical take on a tree of life, that are custom-designed for the space. The guest room was updated to be more inviting for returning adult children and their spouses. Previous furnishings were replaced with nightstands and a large, custom bed that more closely complement the sophisticated feel of the rest of the home.

In this primary bathroom remodel, a once uninspiring space was completely transformed into a fresh and modern bathroom that excelled in both aesthetics and functionality. To achieve this, the room was opened up by removing parts of the walls surrounding the shower and toilet. The introduction of a half pony wall struck a perfect balance, offering privacy while allowing light to flow freely throughout the room. Unique and stylish tiles were meticulously chosen for the shower and bathtub, injecting a sense of intentionality into the overall design. A beautiful new vanity became the centerpiece, complemented by a large mirror and new vanity lighting to complete the look. The addition of gold fixtures throughout the room added a touch of luxury, elevating the bathroom into a space that marries both form and function seamlessly.

Bringing to life harmony, comfort and calmness. Careful selection of furnishings to provide a timeless interior. The colour scheme is inspired from nature - khaki tans, greens, clay - while adding graphic patterns, soft textures and black accents to inject energy and interest to the decor.

The most interesting part of the project from a construction standpoint took place on the lower level, as we transformed what was once a cramped and low-ceilinged basement into a comfortable, light-filled, and smartly detailed family room and guest suite. The design by architect John Clarke incorporates a bank of floor-to-ceiling casement windows and transoms in the family room that look out into a long, stone-clad light well, allowing views to the garden above, and making the below-ground space feel bright and spacious, and not at all subterranean. The process of supporting the house, demolishing the old foundation, excavating down, and installing the new, deeper foundation was complicated by the zero-clearance property lines, as well as the sandy soil, which required geo-grouting (injection with a cementitious slurry) for stability during demolition and excavation
