Challenge
This Lafayette kitchen was dark and poorly-lit due to the unsightly soffits that hindered adequate lighting throughout the space. A bulky microwave cabinet impeded the homeowners’ ability to use the counter space below it, and the full range cooktop on the center island took up valuable prep space. Additional space was lost in an unused desk area that had no functional purpose. To make matters worse, a leaky appliance damaged their beautiful hardwood floors. Needless to say, these Lafayette homeowners were ready to remodel. With insurance check in hand, they contacted Riverside Construction to help them design and build a kitchen that would solve all of their functional challenges.
Solution
By removing the soffits, Riverside Construction was able to design the cabinets to reach all the way to the ceiling. This allowed for ample storage, and the ability for the homeowner to display her pretty dishes and other kitchen collectibles along one wall.
A non-removable pipe along the second wall and above the sink prohibited Riverside Construction from adding glass panels. However, we were still able to attach a standard cabinet door instead and preserve the seamless look that the homeowner was looking for.
The appliances were rearranged to make better use of the workspace and create better traffic flow.
Luckily, we were able to locate the same hardwood flooring that had been laid in their kitchen (not always feasible). This allowed us to repair the damaged wood and blend it seamlessly with the existing floor.
Although required by code, the homeowner didn’t like the outlets disrupting the visual appeal of the backsplash. She wanted Riverside Construction to figure out a way to hide all of the outlets. Our solution was to install power strips that mounted under the cabinets at a slight angle where the cabinet met the wall, making them less visible but still easily accessible.
Results
The homeowners were thrilled they didn’t need to pay for the cost of an entire new floor. They were also pleased with a beautiful new kitchen that met all of their needs exactly.

Our clients had a dishwasher disaster in their 1950's galley kitchen last year. The insurance company was sonly willing to pay about half the cost to rebuild. The clients also didn't like the dark, tight kitchen, and wanted to come up up with a way to open it up to the main room of their home. We took out the wall between kitchen and living room, while keeping the flow of the kitchen and saving money on pre-fab cabinets. We also put a large island at the end of the space, with open shelving above to display beloved travel artifacts. One secret - the stair down to the lower floor goes right beneath the island, leaving just enough space for some toy storage shelves on either side. We used hand-crafted Zellige tile for the backsplash, to echo the crafted quality of some of the décor. Not every client has an endless budget, so we work with families to get the most from their resources. In this case, the clients also feel that the space has "California Coastal" light, even in the Pacific Northwest.

Interior Designer Rebecca Robeson designed this downtown loft to reflect the homeowners LOVE FOR THE LOFT! With an energetic look on life, this homeowner wanted a high-quality home with casual sensibility. Comfort and easy maintenance were high on the list...
Rebecca and team went to work transforming this 2,000-sq.ft. condo in a record 6 months.
Contractor Ryan Coats (Earthwood Custom Remodeling, Inc.) lead a team of highly qualified sub-contractors throughout the project and over the finish line.
8" wide hardwood planks of white oak replaced low quality wood floors, 6'8" French doors were upgraded to 8' solid wood and frosted glass doors, used brick veneer and barn wood walls were added as well as new lighting throughout. The outdated Kitchen was gutted along with Bathrooms and new 8" baseboards were installed. All new tile walls and backsplashes as well as intricate tile flooring patterns were brought in while every countertop was updated and replaced. All new plumbing and appliances were included as well as hardware and fixtures. Closet systems were designed by Robeson Design and executed to perfection. State of the art sound system, entertainment package and smart home technology was integrated by Ryan Coats and his team.
Exquisite Kitchen Design, (Denver Colorado) headed up the custom cabinetry throughout the home including the Kitchen, Lounge feature wall, Bathroom vanities and the Living Room entertainment piece boasting a 9' slab of Fumed White Oak with a live edge. Paul Anderson of EKD worked closely with the team at Robeson Design on Rebecca's vision to insure every detail was built to perfection.
The project was completed on time and the homeowners are thrilled... And it didn't hurt that the ball field was the awesome view out the Living Room window.
In this home, all of the window treatments, built-in cabinetry and many of the furniture pieces, are custom designs by Interior Designer Rebecca Robeson made specifically for this project.

This makeover started with a real, century old farmhouse, and turned into a beautiful, modern farmhouse. Dual dishwashers insure clean dishes for this busy family.

Hardwood floors were extended into the living room creating a continuous open floor plan on the main level. The entertainment center/bookcase and the fireplace received a facelift. Designer Carol Kornak replaced the doors to match the cabinets in the adjacent kitchen. And new hinges insured the doors would open properly. The door to the storage area under the stairs was replaced and now conceals a hidden play room for grandchildren. The traditional fireplace mantel was replaced with a granite surround more in keeping with their contemporary taste.

The built-in work center and desk can be hidden when the floor to bulkhead cabinet doors are pulled from their resting slots to cover the area. The remainder of the wall save the double oven is storage. The custom cabinet hardware was fabricated to insure that the reveal between the hardware and the cabinet edge was the same everywhere. The custom cabinetry is by Michael S. Johnson & Co., Cabinetmakers.
