The homeowners came to us wanting to create flow throughout their main living space. They achieved this by having luxury vinyl plank flooring installed throughout their foyer, kitchen, hallway, laundry room, first floor bathroom, and office space. They opened their kitchen up by removing their oddly shaped island into a peninsula with seating up to 3 people. Lighter colored cabinets were used to make the space feel big and open, while creating warmth through the darker backsplash and earthy green painted walls. Off the kitchen, we turned the not often used desk/landing zone area into 2 side by side tall pantry units with lots of rollout shelves and storage. Lastly, before the renovation there were 2 arched openings into the kitchen. We closed one off, which made the dining room not only be a true dining room, but it also allowed for this wall in the kitchen to become the “appliance wall”. The homeowners now have lots of space to prep, cook and entertain while still having access to their coffee station, fridge, microwave and double oven.

We The People Construction is proud to present the accomplished venture, the Outdated to Outstanding kitchen remodel. This project marks a transformation from a dated, dim kitchen into a bright, welcoming, and highly functional space. A comprehensive kitchen remodel that was motivated by the homeowner's desire for a more modern and vibrant cooking area. The old, brown cabinets and dark brown countertop were replaced with pristine white cabinets and luxurious granite countertops. The choice of white not only modernizes the space but also amplifies the natural light, making the kitchen more inviting. Taking center stage in this kitchen transformation is a standalone wooden counter, acting as both a visual anchor and a practical component. This island introduces an element of warmth with its natural wood finish, contrasting beautifully against the white surroundings. One of the key features of this project is the side countertop, where four green upholstered stools are neatly arranged. This setup creates a casual dining or socializing area, encouraging interaction and conversation during meal prep times. The sink, placed strategically in front of a large window, takes full advantage of the outdoor views and natural light. This thoughtful positioning enhances the overall ambiance and functionality of the kitchen. The window also allows the homeowner to enjoy the beautiful outdoors while carrying out daily chores. Last but not least, the stainless-steel appliances were selected for their sleek design and durability. The homeowners chose to install perimeter cabinets using Dynasty by Omega. They chose the Madrid door style, Cherry wood, and a truffle stain. As for the island cabinets, they wanted the Madrid door style and Maple wood and then opted for the Pearl paint. The countertops are quartz and the island is granite. Before the renovation started, the homeowners selected Jenn-Air appliances, including an induction cooktop and built-in microwave oven with speed cook. Once the construction was underway, we removed the bulkheads to allow new cabinets that extended to the ceiling with two PC crown molding. This provided a cleaner, more modern look along with added storage for items that are occasionally used. We also swapped the pantry and refrigerator location to open up space as you enter the kitchen from the garage. The redesign also gave the refrigerator a built-in look. Then, we moved the cooktop to the corner and installed stainless steel Zephyr range hood and beveled subway tile in a herringbone pattern. The backsplash and new cooktop turned the most used area of the kitchen into a design feature. The addition of an enlarged island allows extra seating for up to four people. Moreover, island cabinets include two full-sized waste baskets for recycling and standard waste. The new farmhouse sink from Kohler not only looks and functions well but the drain is positioned at the rear corner. The plumbing in the cabinet below is consolidated to the back corner providing much more storage. Last, the built-in TV not only looks great but also reduces counter clutter. Plus, the drawer below the TV contains USB outlet for small personal device charging.

Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects and Henry Calvert of Calvert Ventures Designed and built a new warm, modern, Eichler-inspired, open, indoor-outdoor home on a deeper-than-usual San Mateo Highlands property where an original Eichler house had burned to the ground. The owners wanted multi-generational living and larger spaces than the original home offered, but all parties agreed that the house should respect the neighborhood and blend in stylistically with the other Eichlers. At first the Klopf team considered re-using what little was left of the original home and expanding on it. But after discussions with the owner and builder, all parties agreed that the last few remaining elements of the house were not practical to re-use, so Klopf Architecture designed a new home that pushes the Eichler approach in new directions. One disadvantage of Eichler production homes is that the house designs were not optimized for each specific lot. A new custom home offered the team a chance to start over. In this case, a longer house that opens up sideways to the south fit the lot better than the original square-ish house that used to open to the rear (west). Accordingly, the Klopf team designed an L-shaped “bar” house with a large glass wall with large sliding glass doors that faces sideways instead of to the rear like a typical Eichler. This glass wall opens to a pool and landscaped yard designed by Arterra Landscape Architects. Driving by the house, one might assume at first glance it is an Eichler because of the horizontality, the overhanging flat roof eaves, the dark gray vertical siding, and orange solid panel front door, but the house is designed for the 21st Century and is not meant to be a “Likeler.” You won't see any posts and beams in this home. Instead, the ceiling decking is a western red cedar that covers over all the beams. Like Eichlers, this cedar runs continuously from inside to out, enhancing the indoor / outdoor feeling of the house, but unlike Eichlers it conceals a cavity for lighting, wiring, and insulation. Ceilings are higher, rooms are larger and more open, the master bathroom is light-filled and more generous, with a separate tub and shower and a separate toilet compartment, and there is plenty of storage. The garage even easily fits two of today's vehicles with room to spare. A massive 49-foot by 12-foot wall of glass and the continuity of materials from inside to outside enhance the inside-outside living concept, so the owners and their guests can flow freely from house to pool deck to BBQ to pool and back. During construction in the rough framing stage, Klopf thought the front of the house appeared too tall even though the house had looked right in the design renderings (probably because the house is uphill from the street). So Klopf Architecture paid the framer to change the roofline from how we had designed it to be lower along the front, allowing the home to blend in better with the neighborhood. One project goal was for people driving up the street to pass the home without immediately noticing there is an "imposter" on this lot, and making that change was essential to achieve that goal. This 2,606 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom Eichler-inspired new house is located in San Mateo in the heart of the Silicon Valley.
