FDC1 CHAIR Deemed by Le Corbusier as a "romantic revolutionary", Flávio de Carvalho was a man of many skills who got involved in an innovative and provocative way in many artistic fields and particularly in design and architecture areas. His concepts of design and architecture are moved principally by the imagination and correspond to the new forms of living and thinking. For this man recognized today as one of the Brazilian modern architecture precursors, interior design is as important as architecture. Within the framework of his main project, the Capuava ranch (1939), he designed most of its furniture, among them the famous FDC1 armchair created in the 50’s. The shape of this armchair is impressive by its graphic and sculptural aspects. Tribal mask or wink to sadomasochism, this noteworthy piece was at that time very avant-garde and remains very modern. The entry to this Modern minimal apartment is accented by a unique mirror and shelf. It opens up the entry and reflects back the tones of black, gray, and white as well as the Modernist furniture.

Located in an 1890 Wells Fargo stable and warehouse in the Hamilton Park historic district, this intervention focused on creating a personal, comfortable home in an unusually tall loft space. The living room features 45’ high ceilings. The mezzanine level was conceived as a porous, space-making element that allowed pockets of closed storage, open display, and living space to emerge from pushing and pulling the floor plane. The newly cantilevered mezzanine breaks up the immense height of the loft and creates a new TV nook and work space. Situated within the iconic 1923 Teodoridis Apartment Building, this 165 m² residence has been meticulously reimagined to honor its architectural legacy while embracing a refined, modern aesthetic. The renovation pays homage to the apartment’s timeless charm by preserving its exquisite ceiling plasters and original floor tiles, which whisper stories of the past. These historic elements are thoughtfully juxtaposed with a contemporary design language inspired by the Bauhaus movement, resulting in a space that radiates both character and innovation. The living area is a curated sanctuary of iconic design, featuring masterpieces such as the Eames lounge chair, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chairs, and Flos chandeliers—all set against the backdrop of a bespoke, floor-to-ceiling bookcase that elevates both function and form. In the dining space, a striking interplay of materiality and geometry takes center stage with Le Corbusier’s LC7 swivel chairs and LC6 dining table, complemented by a custom-designed display unit that exudes understated opulence. The bespoke craftsmanship continues into the private quarters, where custom-designed furniture, masterfully integrated lighting by Flos, and a meticulous attention to detail create a sanctuary of serenity and style. This residence is not just a home—it is a testament to the artistry of architectural restoration and modern-day luxury, where every detail tells a story of elegance and timeless design.

This residence, sited above a river canyon, is comprised of two intersecting building forms. The primary building form contains main living spaces on the upper floor and a guest bedroom, workroom, and garage at ground level. The roof rises from the intimacy of the master bedroom to provide a greater volume for the living room, while opening up to capture mountain views to the west and sun to the south. The secondary building form, with an opposing roof slope contains the kitchen, the entry, and the stair leading up to the main living space. A.I.A. A black and white kitchen consists of two adjacent ante spaces: a general sized work area and a large breakfast / family room. Here, a dropped tiered ceiling provides excellent lighting for the counters below, while giving a heightened ceiling feeling. Cove lighting, under counter lighting, and recessed lighting add to the aura.
