A person’s home is the place where their personality can flourish. In this client’s case, it was their love for their native homeland of Kenya, Africa. One of the main challenges with these space was to remain within the client’s budget. It was important to give this home lots of character, so hiring a faux finish artist to hand-paint the walls in an African inspired pattern for powder room to emphasizing their existing pieces was the perfect solution to staying within their budget needs. Each room was carefully planned to showcase their African heritage in each aspect of the home. The main features included deep wood tones paired with light walls, and dark finishes. A hint of gold was used throughout the house, to complement the spaces and giving the space a bit of a softer feel.

Four Visual Comfort & Co sconces in polished nickel flank the whole vanity. The rich wood complements the polished nickel knobs and white marble countertop. The large existing mirror was repositioned between the windows to expand the sense of scale, making the room feel even more spacious. Leather seating and a bench add strength and richness, while the channeled upholstered bed and plush bedding soften the overall feel. Updated wood flooring, new nightstands, and a custom built-in infuse warmth and ground the space in natural elements. A plush area rug provides comfort underfoot, while woven window treatments add texture and complement the darker tones in the wallpaper. The design carefully balances black and gray tones with bright accents to maintain an airy feel. Gold finishes and mixed metals were layered throughout, tying into the home’s broader design palette. A new ceiling fan with wood-toned blades harmonizes with the natural elements and furnishings. The result is a bedroom that feels polished, grounded, and richly layered with materials and textures.

This multi-phased project to a midcentury rambler in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul that started with a broken swimming pool, outdated finishes and one less bedroom than kids and slowly transformed with Nordic design influences and an emphasis on showcasing the owner’s art collection. The first phase design solution was a two-bedroom, one bath kid’s wing addition over the garage and a kitchen remodel to visually connect the living and dining areas. The kitchen cabinets are IKEA boxes with custom Grey Elm door fronts. All windows were replaced with new H Windows as well as new white oak hardwood floors installed on the main level complementing the entire home’s light and airy Scandinavian interior design. The existing two main level bedrooms were converted into a primary suite with an office/flex space and the existing bathroom was updated to serve as an ensuite bathroom. Clear cedar soffits were installed to add visual warmth throughout the year and creates visual contrast to the black exterior of the house. Stained cedar slats were installed to provide visual interest and provide shade and shadow interplay. The unfinished basement was updated to create a media room as well as a home office. The original gunite pool was restored a new poolside patio space and a stone patio off the house used for outdoor dining were installed.
