This home, originally designed by Roscoe Hemenway, was in need of some updates. General contractor Hammer & Hand and designer Gusto Design Studio remodeled the home to include a full-gut kitchen remodel, the movement of a laundry room upstairs, new powder room, and new sliding door and patio. The team built the patio to better connect the home to the beautiful backyard and pool beyond, creating an inside-outside connection the clients will enjoy for years to come. The kitchen remodel saw a complete transformation, with many standout elements including a coffee prep bar with hidden-in-plain-sight laundry chute, gently scalloped island casework, and bright white design elements throughout. Three 5,500sf homes and one 6,000sf home now sit on a very unique site in the historically designated Society Hill neighborhood. To the east sits 101 Walnut, a twelve story contemporary white residential tower, while to the west sits Bookbinder’s, a 5 story Greek Revival building and one of Philadelphia’s most significant landmarked historic sites. Between these two buildings, the Walnut St Estates mediates form, height, materiality and design concept. The project’s masonry and glass exterior is articulated by a delicate brick solar screen who’s proportions and color reference the contemporary influence to the east, while the underlying building form, height and mass of the project echo the scale and tonality of Bookbinders to the west. The home’s interior features walnut hardwood and limestone tile floors, walnut ceilings, custom millwork, and highly detailed stairs and railings. The 4/5 bedroom, 5 full and 2 half bath homes feature two car garage parking and in-law suite on the ground level with a classic piano nobile on the 2nd floor with a double height space in the front. A library and additional bedrooms sit on the 3rd floor while the master suite covers the entire 4th floor and circulates around an open sky garden. The roof lounge features two terraces and a second Poggenpohl kitchen making for an unparalleled entertaining space. The Walnut Street Estates project redefined expectations in the luxury home market of Philadelphia and it’s amenities, details and concepts are imitated throughout the city.

Our client was excited to get to work on his new place. We connected right here on Houzz and had so much fun working together on this project! Upstairs, a beautiful mediation space full of cozy pillows in varying shades of gray and green is complemented with crisp white bead board walls. Natural textures and reclaimed wood is used throughout the home to give it an organic clean feel. We loved the exposed beams in the kitchen and took advantage of the open airy feeling by adding darker toned barstools. A mix of materials for the dining table and chairs keeps it looking fresh and modern. Bursts of color in just the right places add excitement and depth to this super cozy home.

This dreamy master bath remodel in East Cobb offers generous space without going overboard in square footage. The homeowner chose to go with a large double vanity with a custom seated space as well as a nice shower with custom features and decided to forgo the typical big soaking tub. The vanity area shown in the photos has plenty of storage within the wall cabinets and the large drawers below. The countertop is Cedar Brown slab marble with undermount sinks. The brushed nickel metal details were done to work with the theme through out the home. The floor is a 12x24 honed Crema Marfil. The stunning crystal chandelier draws the eye up and adds to the simplistic glamour of the bath. The shower was done with an elegant combination of tumbled and polished Crema Marfil, two rows of Emperador Light inlay and Mirage Glass Tiles, Flower Series, Polished.

This house was designed for a couple who wanted a house that was open to their garden while maintaining their privacy on a small 50’ by 150’ infill site in East Dallas. The two-story house is set well back on the site and the roof extends past the enclosed part of the house into the garden so that the garden is taken into the living space while it mediates between the public and private sides of the site. Although the house is small, it contains a variety of spaces including two bedrooms, one with a sleeping porch. The exterior wall materials vary from opaque cementitious board to semi-transparent polycarbonate to fully transparent glazing depending on the requirements for privacy or view within the site. The interior materials are carefully detailed but left unfinished for the most part so that the nature of the construction materials is fully on display. The house was chosen for the 2013 Dallas AIA Home Tour.

The site descends from the street and is privileged with dynamic natural views toward a creek below and beyond. To incorporate the existing landscape into the daily life of the residents, the house steps down to the natural topography. A continuous and jogging retaining wall from outside to inside embeds the structure below natural grade at the front with flush transitions at its rear facade. All indoor spaces open up to a central courtyard which terraces down to the tree canopy, creating a readily visible and occupiable transitional space between man-made and nature. The courtyard scheme is simplified by two wings representing common and private zones - connected by a glass dining “bridge." This transparent volume also visually connects the front yard to the courtyard, clearing for the prospect view, while maintaining a subdued street presence. The staircase acts as a vertical “knuckle,” mediating shifting wing angles while contrasting the predominant horizontality of the house. Crips materiality and detailing, deep roof overhangs, and the one-and-half story wall at the rear further enhance the connection between outdoors and indoors, providing nuanced natural lighting throughout and a meaningful framed procession through the property. After spending years traveling through Indonesia and India on buying trips, she wanted a taste of the tropics in her own back yard. We worked together to incorporate her beautiful objects into an undeniably tropical-feeling space. By carefully selecting plants and their placement, we were able to achieve the lush green feel of Bali or Hawaii in the Southern California climate without using a lot of water. After installation, this oasis is alive with birds and dragonflies. Lush green plantings create microclimates around the house that help cool the property on hot days. Integrating edible trees provides the homeowner with pomegranates, several types of guavas, lemons, limes, and bananas. Today, the homeowner rents out her home and garden for photo shoots and weddings.
