We demolished the Living Room, tearing out the original parquet floors throughout the apartment, which were at least 60 years old and had been sanded and refinished, God knows how many times? They were extremely thin. We then built a very narrow soffit , which is just the size of the Crown Molding which gave it a very slim profile to hold the low profile LED lights . Previously there were no lights accept two Halogen Torcheres, which threw off a lot of heat, especially in the summer months and illuminated the ceiling.. The ceiling light in the foyer was kept high up, so it wouldn't affect a tall person. The large bulb was just put there until a Dining Fixture could be found? This is a great shot of the new wood floors, which made the Living Room, brighter, lighter, definitely more spacious and up to date and timeless. It also gives a very clear view of the new right wall, that previously had some strange draws, down near the closet ,which originally were part of the right closet door. We cleaned up the whole wall, so client could put some sort of media unit, that previously would have looked ridiculous with the draws and ugly very obvious door, hiding the Utility Closet. We left the Utility Closet in place, and put her commercial looking metal file cabinet, where client kept important documents and we put in electrical outlets and built her a shelf for her printer and other stationary supplies. We then put on flush solid core doors without molding, invisible hinges and hidden door hardware, so it just blended into the wall and no longer stuck out like a sore thumb!

The beautiful window became the groundwork for the design. Glazed ivory melamine with raised panel faces enhanced the wood flooring and trim without overpowering the room. High pressure laminate coordinating work surfaces were used for both durability and eye appeal. Large lateral filing drawers and a vertical file along with ample drawers for miscellaneous items created the spaces needed to keep paperwork from cluttering up the desk. With the addition of tack boards above the coordinating counters, notes can be accessed easily. The under counter LED lighting in a glazed light box allows the proper lighting. The client wanted a kitchen that created a warm and cozy feeling where family and friends would feel right at home. She sought a kitchen that was of the highest quality cabinetry and a designer that would really listen to her needs and wants. The Pewter glaze overtones on the cherry wood tie in with the distressed gray island; the Silestone Quartz Soapstone around the perimeter provides a neutral background, while the island has a more dramatic polished granite with cream, rose and brown tones to become a beautiful centerpiece. The cabinets are heavily detailed with beaded sides and backs, inset doors, chamfered corners wherever possible, toe valances and applied mouldings around the entire base to add a rich, handcrafted look. The heights of the cabinets vary to reduce uniformity, adding to the casual charm. An apron front sink also contributes to the country look. The desk is particularly fanciful with it’s mullion doors, French Country open shelves with beaded sides and back, curved and beaded valance and drawer with multiple drawerheads / applied molding. We also incorporated doors that come all the way to the counter to hide the usual home office clutter. The lower part of the desk includes many drawers of various sizes and even a special locking file drawer. The beautiful dark gray island boasts French Country open shelves with arched and beaded valances, a fluting detail on each corner of the cookbook shelves, toe details, lots of beadboard, and a variety of storage options for cooking utensils, pans, and serving dishes.

Like many projects, this began with a discussion about reconfiguring the island and refinishing the cabinets. Then the clients asked if I could change their sink (undermounted below granite), add a second dishwasher, and replace her double oven. When they realized the extent of those requests, they decided they might as well replace the cabinets and get the quality, storage, and finishes they wanted. They desired traditional styling with a French motif, and luxurious, yet durable finishes that would complement her eggplant/gold/green fabrics. To avoid more expense, we kept the existing windows and retained the existing placement of major appliances (except the cooktop which we moved slightly for better function). I relocated the microwave to the island so that we could install a built-in, larger refrigerator. I reconfigured the layout to better accommodate the needs of this large family – they have six children and three dogs. Everyone has breakfast, takes lunches, has dinner at home daily, and even the dog food is cooked from scratch. There are great organizational accessories in the cabinets. The full-extension quiet-close dovetail drawers minimize noise and feel like fine furniture. The cabinet and countertop finishes are extremely durable. Even the Iroko wood eating counter is easily maintained using an oil-wax that repels stains. The island shape provides seating for three as well as room for the cooktop, warming drawer, microwave drawer, and generous storage. The sprawling countertop works well for their volume of food preparation. The desk area now functions with proper phone and electrical outlets, file drawers, and enough counter. The choice of flooring was critical – the kitchen is part of a great room that flows into a large entry hall. The existing travertine, tile, and carpet did not wear well. I selected durable porcelain tiles that resemble limestone and wood and created a European-inspired woven design in the entry. A simpler version of the same materials in the kitchen and an inset real wood into the seating area create flow between the rooms. To create more visual interest, I removed non-critical soffits. The remaining soffits were clad with wood so it appears that all is part of the cabinet design. The mixture of glazed cherry and black rubbed-through-paint on cherry finishes are enhanced by the dramatic black and gold veins in the creamy granite counter. We retained the straw and plaster walls that create an old-world feeling. The custom mahogany and iron pantry door balanced the design and completed this truly unique space. Pewter cabinet hardware and patterned glass accentuate the motif. Many of the cabinet accountrements are made from a compo material and recreate historical French mouldings. The remaining adornments are hand-carved wood. On top of beauty and function, the cabinet boxes are made from environmentally-friendly, no formaldehyde-added agriboard. So we have traditional design, ornate mouldings, multi-step finishes, and are still nice to the earth and my clients!
