Treetops House The Treetops House is a renovation and major expansion of a 1955 suburban ranch house. The project presented some interesting questions of preservation vs change, as well as a compelling story of dealing with a challenging (and ultimately rewarding) site. The original house was very typical for its time and place—a sprawling single-story, fairly nondescript affair that had small windows, and was clad entirely in Texas limestone. Our challenge was to turn this into a modern house that was open, bright, and inviting, while not completely obliterating all traces of what had existed before. Part of our philosophy is that elements of the history of a place be retained and incorporated into any new design. There are characteristics of almost any design, regardless of how banal, that embody memories and a sense of neighborhood. We feel that preserving these adds depth to any new intervention. With the Treetops House, we largely maintained the entire limestone perimeter wall, and used it as a heavy plinth on which a new second level was added. The new upper level features large frameless glass windows and is filled with light. The interior was opened up to create double-height spaces that bring this light from above and into the center of the house. The new composition is one which is clearly of its time, but also respects and reflects the time and place in which the original house was created. The house is on a site that straddles a fault in the limestone base strata below. Water continuously flows up through this fault and flows out onto the property. The original 1955 house featured a foundation with extremely deep concrete piers that allowed the house to bear on more stable strata far below the surface. Given that building new piers was cost-prohibitive, we did not expand the house’s footprint at all, but cantilevered the new second level out from the existing structure. This strategy not only allowed for the house to be within budget, but also gave it a distinctive dynamic expression. The different materials and profiles of the first and second floors emphasize the house’s horizontality and create another kind stratum that is visual and expressive. Inside the house, a double-height entry hall features stairs that lead up to the second-level main living space. The perimeter of this space is made up of frameless glass is set atop a continuous planter wall that provides a green foreground to the treescape beyond. Large overhangs provide shade at all times of the day, and the surrounding cladding of charred cypress prevents glare and adds a textural counterpoint. Other features include a large kitchen with countertop-height serving windows that open out onto a pool terrace and entertaining area, as well as unique built-in storage and display elements.Landscaping is entirely comprised of native grasses and other low-maintenance plantings. For this classic San Francisco William Wurster house, we complemented the iconic modernist architecture, urban landscape, and Bay views with contemporary silhouettes and a neutral color palette. We subtly incorporated the wife's love of all things equine and the husband's passion for sports into the interiors. The family enjoys entertaining, and the multi-level home features a gourmet kitchen, wine room, and ample areas for dining and relaxing. An elevator conveniently climbs to the top floor where a serene master suite awaits.

This master bath is a perfect example of a well balanced space, with his and hers counter spaces just to start. His tall 6'8" stature required a 40 inch counter height creating this multi-level counter space that wraps in along the wall, continuing to the vanity desk. The smooth transition between each level is intended to emulate that of a traditional flow form piece. This gives each of them ample functional space and storage. The warm tones within wood accents and the cooler tones found in the tile work are tied together nicely with the greige stone countertop. In contrast to the barn door and other wood features, matte black hardware is used as a sharp accent. This space successfully blends into a rustic elegance theme.

We took a large kitchen that could be overwhelming and transformed the space to create a sense of intimacy by using earthy materials like the wood beams on the ceiling and wooden cabinetry and mixes of natural stones. The other challenge is the request from the client to have a contemporary approach to the design but making sure that it is still warm and inviting for their use. -Contrasting materials like the heavy blackened steel and granite were used with soft, natural materials to create a balance between serenity and masculinity. What is unique is the play of mix of materials in a variety of finishes from natural sandblasted granite to a honed limestone combine with a solid surface material Caesar Stone. The cabinets (cabinet maker-Mueller Nichols) has two different wood combination from a lighter vertical Eucalyptus and darker vertical Walnut (running horizontal on the cabinets) But the look is subtle since the mix is still overall earthy, natural and tone on tone change. The old beams in the ceiling were used. It was painted over the years so we stripped it down to the natural material and added cross beams to create the grid patterns. Rustic cross beams combine with beautiful phoenician plaster on the ceilings. Built in speakers that can be troweled over with plastering so the speakers are totally hidden in the ceilings. Multi level islands to serve multiple activities from cleaning, prepping, chopping and eating. Butcher block lower level for easy chopping and cantilivered to create a more dynamic and sculptural quality. ce the clients really cook in this kitchen that the list of appliances for extraordinary. Pizza oven, built in coffee maker, steamer, double convection ovens, 6 burner pro style cooktop, 48 inch refrigerator, 2 refrigerator drawers, 2 dishwashers, wine refrigerators etc... The seamless windows highlight and connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The clients are gourmet cooks that enjoy entertaining and cooking so many types of cooking equipments like a six burner cook top with grill, a brick oven and a speed oven as well as a pantry that is connected to the kitchen were used. There are also two islands in the kitchen which serves different functions. One is used mainly for prepping and cleaning while the other is used as a serving area and a place to gather. A cigar-box-style cabinet in walnut sets off the granite countertop on the island, and a tongue-and-groove finish shows craftsmanship. "We layered materials, textures and colors to create a space that was natural and inviting, yet in keeping with the modern style of the rest of the house," says the designer. Using different kinds of wood and stains brings a sense of intimacy to this large walk-in pantry.
