The home was designed to display the original owners rare art collection from around the world. It has a rare and captivating arts and craft style and a very open floor plan for its time. As such, it is superb for entertaining. In fact, the current owners have held many large benefits and functions here. All of the woodwork in the main part of the home is selected cypress, except the gourmet kitchen which is cherry. The main living areas that make up the center of the home (i.e., dining room, great room, game room or library) are separated by 5'6" high half partition walls capped with an 8" shelf around the side walls. All the partitions and side walls are wainscoted with 6.5" wood panels. The ceilings in these main rooms are wood-paneled with solid beams supported by column-formed posts. The Great Room is enormous and the focal point of the home. The space is grand and can accommodate multiple seating areas, plus a grand or baby grand piano, or even a billiards table. A portion of the ceiling is open and extends to the 2nd floor to a very unique coffered tent-style ceiling with stained glass window at its center. When this family of seven could not find an historic property to fit their modern needs, they decided to build a 6,000 square foot house in Acton, reminiscent of an 1800’s farmhouse which expanded over time. Recycled and new timber framing support the garage and family room. The use of salvaged barn boards and a custom built antique fireplace enforce the historic image. At the front of the house is a formal living room and a music room. Near bye is an open kitchen/dining area that conveniently connects to the front porch, back patio, mudroom and barn garage. Easy access to outside, level changes, ample natural daylight, large open family gathering areas and quiet study nooks modernize the farm house concept and enhance the family’s life style. The use of metal and shingle roofing, clapboards and shingles and stone add variety and reinforces the feel of multiple additions.

This project started as a simple driveway remodel. The homeowners had multiple tree roots breaking through the concrete, so we came in and installed pavers for superior durability and support. During the project the homeowner mentioned needing to upgrade the pergola, so we kindly offered to help. Once they decided on the pergola, the homeowners realized they would need to redo the patio if the pergola was going to get fixed. This led to a full-scale backyard remodel, including a new paver patio, pergola, custom paver planters and retaining wall, a built in fire pit and elegant landscape lighting.
